  1. In all fairness to sfcityduck, the thread title invites this type of response and the toober in question is not someone l would want on my feed.

If you told me 20 years ago marvel was going to make Black Widow, Eternals, ShangChi, Dr Strange 2 and Antman 3, l would laugh and say,‘wait, they made Antman 1 and 2‘.

In other news, Brie Larsen opening a beer is never a failure.

    Is that Brie Larson? No.

For the record, I liked CM as well. I thought Brie and Samuel Jackson had a good back and forth and I appreciated the quick third act wrap up. Never understood the fuss really.

You think that those 2 Avengers movies fit this bill!?

    Yes! I do! lol

They work for you though and that’s great! Enjoy! I don’t think they’re bad, just not great. They are far too contrived imho but that doesn’t mean they can’t be fun.

l have no desire to rewatch either. Remember, l’m a grumpy old man.

It's really weird to me that The Avengers, and Infinity War, seem to be left out of these discussions lately.

If you love them, that’s great. They just haven’t stayed with me in any meaningful way. It’s funny how disposable villains and no stakes will do that. Movies that made a great deal of money but not great movies imho. I would never say they did not entertain. They were well worth the price of admission.

For me, the Fox X-Franchise top list would be:

    1) X-Men: Days of Future Past

    2) Logan

    3) X2

    4) Deadpool

    5) X-Men: First Class

    6) The Wolverine

    7) X-Men (2000)

    8) Deadpool 2

    9) X-Men TAS 1992-1996

There's so much more good/great in these than some give them credit for. And with The Wolverine sure - Act 3 is odd at times. But those first two acts are so good with Logan dealing with the loss of his healing abilities while taking on the Yakuza and Ichiro's clan.

    Great list!

About 4 out of 9. I guess that's okay, in hindsight, considering how good the good ones really were. They were excellent films: X2, First Class, DOFP, and Ummm... hhmmmm. That's it for the X films, unless I can count my guilty pleasure of X3 The Last Stand, which I can't defend, but enjoy. But considering we also have to add in Logan, and the 2 Deadpool movies, I'm okay with the results. They were either excellent or carp, not much of an inbetween.

X2, First Class, DOFP, Deadpool are all outstanding and for me, better than most marvel fare though I would include First Avenger, Winter Soldier and Iron-man in that group of great CBM's. Logan, by far though is my favorite and I think is easily the best in the genre to date. I just don't see marvel topping the good stuff here. My opinion of course.

They’ve proven competent with X-Men movies in the past so I don’t have a lot of worry there.  Their FF4 movies have been dog spoon so I don’t have the same warm feelings about it.

You are aware marvel didn't make those X-men movies right?

But I'm not as sad about the X-men as regards marvels plans, because I feel we have had some great X movies from Fox.

I admit I was being slightly disingenuous in my response to your last post, but I’ve been 100% sincere in my responses to drotto, Gatsby, and others concerning this whole art thing about which I’m done debating now.

Fair enough. For what it’s worth, I enjoy your insights once in awhile. Your obviously intelligent and passionate and that’s never a bad thing.

You might have missed the part of my post where I said human society TODAY is dominated by two mediums of art: cinema and music. I guess you could lump a Taylor Swift concert with 20X the energy of Chantal Akerman's film "Jeanne Dielman...", which is now considered by some to be the greatest film ever made, into that statement. I also believe I qualified my statement by saying I'm not talking about historic works of art sitting in a museum. Michaelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling may be considered one of the great works of European art, but artists don't become legend these days by painting the walls and ceilings of Catholic Churches anymore. I'm talking about NOW. Art that is produced today and that changes the way we think and feel TODAY. Yes, I know all sorts of art can do this, even comic books. But here's a question: where are the Winslow Homers (painting) and the John Singer Sargents(painting) and the William Shakespeares(theater) of today? Answer: they're making movies.

All you really have to say is, imho.

Different forms of art are not directly comparable, and it is impossible to place one above the other.  They may share common components, have a similar purpose, and convey similar idea, but they are a different medium. They do things differently, and have different components that make them great. I do not buy into the idea of high or low art, because everyone has different tastes and their preferred medium. In music I prefer hard rock and metal (low music), I do not listen to classical (high music), but does not mean I am dismissive or would belittle the talent it takes to make classical music. Or have that attitude towards people who love it.

The time to make and complexity to make argument is also baffling. Is the Mono Lisa lower art than a Marvel movie, I am sure it took less time to make? How about the music of Back or Mozart, both very prolific and honored?  How about a masterful TV series that ran for years, that took more time to make than a movie when looked at over time, so it is better then, correct? I have seen plenty of movies and TV shows that a lot of time and hard work went into, still did not make them good.

Now you can compare movies and movies in aspects they clearly share, like plot and storytelling.  You can not compare them on overall presentation, because they have inherent differences, strengths, and weaknesses. I would argue there are many stories that are far better in the comics.  My introduction to comics was the Dark Phenix Sage, find me anyone that will say movie is better.  Although the 90's cartoon version was really good.

When you make statements that are this universal, you are clearly not open to any debate or differences in opinion. It just shows all your own inherent biases, how intrenched in your opinions you are, and how closed minded you can be.

Sorry if this response is a bit rambling.

This is a great post. l disagree with your use of high and low art here and there but really appreciate your qualifying it as your opinion. It shows a basic courtesy lacking by some.

Yeah, a forum for comic book MOVIE discussion. The truth hurts? I mean, take the highest examples of comic book art, say Watchmen or Dark Knight Returns, and they can’t stand up to  the highest examples of cinematic art, whether it’s Citizen Kane, Seven Samurai, Vertigo, Tokyo Story, Star Wars, City Lights, or any other movie from any top 100 list.

They are different things, experienced in different ways, exciting different reactions. Art is not measured in man-hours to produce (I hesitate to use the word create here) but in the amount of time something stays with you. By this measure the MCU is about as low as it gets.

    Wow, really?

A completely different medium I would say. I will stop there.

I cherish my years of comic books and the stories they delivered. Even with all the comic book films and shows I have enjoyed.

To me, comic books were the key influences for the productions we enjoy today. Without them, I'm sure we'd be enjoying cowboy and gangster movies from time to time. And periodic Sherlock Holmes films.

    Agreed!

It's insulting to have to state the obvious that all art is its own experience.
