  1. I remember buying that one off the stand, as well. I remember even as a kid being puzzled by the newsprint cover. Maybe a failed experiment by Gold Key? There's a similar 25 cent reprint issue from that period that reprints "The Old Castle's Secret" and another story or stories. The cover is printed on regular cover stock, though. You are referring to the Best of Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge #1, which reprints "FC #189 - Old Castle's Secret" and "FC #408 The Golden Helmet." Issue #2 reprinted "FC #256 - Luck of the North" and "US #7 - Seven Cities of Cibola." The cover of issue #1was modified to include Uncle Scrooge, whereas the original only had Donald and the nephews. In my poor student days, I bought these reprints before going after the originals just so that I could read the stories.
  2. I noticed that....I thought that would be close to making the sale. For some reason, I can't find this listing. ComicConnect buy it now, not auction. http://www.comicconnect.com/bookDetail.php?id=451023
  3. Picked these up from Metro at SDCC. I asked Frank about the FC199 on Thursday, so he had the book sent by FedEx overnight and I was able to pick up the book on Friday.
  4. Under guide is my experience. $500 is well above GPA for a FC 386 in 5.0. Heritage sold a CGC 5.0 FC 386 for $310.70 in March 2011 and raw 5.0 for $262.90 in June 2012. You should find plenty of mid-grade FC 386 under guide. Be patient.
  5. Overstreet lists the book in good at $757, but duck book prices are slumping. The last Heritage auction of a CGC 2.0 went for $507.88 in June 2011. I would say $450-500. Raw 2.0 went for $286.80 in 2009. Be careful of undisclosed restoration on raw copies. FC 29 is tougher than FC9. Your best bet is a Heritage Internet Auction, where there are likely to be less bidders.
  6. Campus Loves #2 They said I was fast. I saw the following panel on this blog and had to track down a copy. http://pappysgoldenage.blogspot.com/2009/11/number-623-fast-girl-slow-boys-bill.html http://pappysgoldenage.blogspot.com/2009/11/number-623-fast-girl-slow-boys-bill.html
  7. Gary Arlington opened the San Francisco Comic Book Store in 1968. When my family moved into the neighborhood in 1971, I became a regular customer and spend all the extra cash there. All the great underground artists met at his shop. Even though my funds were limited, he never kicked me out. Gary had a stroke recently and retired. He has one of the best raw EC collections around and is still looking for Tale of Terror Annual #1. In August 1972, Bud Plant, the late John Barrett, and Bob Beerbohm co-founded Comics & Comix in Berkeley. I was a student at UC Berkeley from 1973-1976 and visited the shop several times a week.
  8. There are alligators in the panel? What issue did this great panel come from? I love how all the women in Bill Ward comics are either gorgeous or old hags. The men are merely window dressing.
  9. DollMan 14 with Bill Ward at his "Headlights" best.
  10. Four Color 408 Golden Helmet has been one of my favorite comic books of all time. I purchased a beater back in the 70's, but always wanted a nice copy. I just purchased this nice undercopy from 4gemworks. There was supposed to be a 8.0 on the Heritage Internet Auction last week, but the comic book was pulled and put into the July Signature Auction. I noticed a 9.4 white pager also in the July Signature Auction. I probably could not afford the 9.4 anyway. I have noticed when I purchase a nice copy of a comic book, then multiple copies come up for auction. I still think duck books are the best.
  11. Thanks for sharing. Can you show us some interior pages of the Australian edition?
  12. Fast shipping. Well packed. Superior communications. Great prices! Undercut eBay prices by 30%. Highly recommended. AGGIEZ's slabfest sale
  13. Young whippersnappers. 1972 Pac 8 Football USC 12-0 before BCS Baseball USC Basketball UCLA I graduated from Berkeley. We never win at most sports (except rugby), but had the highest ranked department in my major, statistics. When the basketball or football team did well, there was usually some NCAA rules violation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/College_football_national_championships_in_NCAA_Division_I_FBS http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Pacific-12_Conference_national_championships
  14. Flattop - 7 issues Stevie - 6 issues Mortie - 4 issues Mazie miniature - 7 issues Mazie comic sized - 28 issues Mazie - Tastee-Freez #5 promotional
  15. Which comic? This happened to me but I was not as happy as you. Maybe there's more to this story.... ASM 33 9.2. I apologize if you were the person that I outbid by one cent. I sniped with eight seconds left in case there was another bidder, but my bid never went up. I always bid odd amounts and usually snipe.
  16. Won auction on Sunday. Comic book was delivered today. Won over next bidder by one cent. Must be my greatest eBay win ever.
  17. G.A.tor, I would appreciate your assessment of Barks comics. Have they sold well for you over the past year? Are the higher grade 9.0 and above difficult to find? There are plenty of low to mid grade, which do not appear to sell. Are most Barks collectors old coots like myself? Any hucksters replying to my questions will be politely ignored. Thanks!
  18. My latest acquisition. Unfortunately, PQ is pretty bad. Notice that somebody put a plate on top of the book covering the first E to second A in SCIENCE-FANTASY. There is also a tape pull on the WE in WEIRD. These annuals are tough to find. Now if I could find a Tales of Terror Annual 1.
  19. Robert E. Howard wrote much more than fantasy stories. His western stories were among the best ever written. And who can forget the hilarious adventures of Breckinridge Elkins.
  20. Here is a bad photo of my latest CGC comic book, which was delivered today. I added my forum name to the upper-left hand corner, in case the comic book "accidentally" ends up on eBay. Took me forever to find a nice copy. I could not justify putting out the big bucks for the beautiful Gaines File Copy on CL. I also have a beater reader copy that I bought in 1974. This is my favorite EC cover of all time and my favorite Wood cover.
  21. Russ Heath is a great artist and a nice guy. I purchased the recreation from Steve Wyatt, who is Russ's contact for commissions. I saw the recreation at 2010 SDCC and bought it right away. Other than the Haunted tank covers, this is my favorite Russ Heath Cover.
  22. Wow, you guys have some impressive high grade Timelys. Here is my latest purchase, which has a dirty spine. I love the Captain America flying in the air covers.
  23. One of my favorites. Underbidder on a Gaines copy in the last C-Link auction. It went for a big price. I was in third place at $1202. The Gaines 9.0 went for a whopping $1605. I have a beaten up copy and a nice copy. Was hoping for a Gaines copy, but not at twice guide. I noticed that there are not very many copies of this particular Weird Science around on either CL nor Metro.
  24. G.A.tor, I have a page count question for you regarding Captain America Comics #37. According to the Grand Comics Database, there should be 60 pages total. I looked at my copy and noticed that there were 16 pages + front cover up to the centerfold and 12 pages + back cover from the centerfold ( for a total of (16+1+12+1)*2 = 60 pages). So four of the pages after the centerfold were cut. Is this common for Captain America Golden Age? Thanks!
