  1. Somehow I don't think they're shouting at teenage kids with a megaphone saying: "Hey you - yes YOU! would you like a new career? Come over here and squash this Amazing Fantasy #15 under this press thingy and see if it turns out ok" I think things are a little more professional than letting "apprentice pressers" practice on your books. The people that press your books will be more than professional.
  2. This is purely a guess, but I assume it will have virtually no effect on turnaround times, either positive or negative. My bet is with negative (thumbs u
  3. Yep. This time next year we'll be wishing we only had to wait 6 months to get our books back. I should be able to move house, change jobs and have a child before I get my books back. Even when I get them (assuming I haven't passed away), the way my memory is, I won't remember what the hell they are or who sent them to me.
  4. I wonder if CGC will disclose pressing? and Why do people press modern comic books when 95 percent of them are near-mint anyways? Because 95% of them are not NM and for re-sale 9.8 is the grade that everyone wants So it looks like it will be easy to get a 9.8 modern comic book for a few bucks more now. So what will be special about modern 9.8s if everybody has one? Christonabike, don't ask questions like that...the whole pack of cards will come tumbling down! or I wonder if we could now buy a bunch of Walking Dead #1 9.6`s and New Mutants #98 9.6`s, then send them off to CGC to get pressed as 9.8`s ? YES we could. People have been doing that for years.... What's your point?

So what will be special about modern 9.8s if everybody has one? NEWSFLASH Have you been living under a rock for the last few years? Why would it be any easier to get 9.8's now than when it was before? I never said they were "special", I simply said that it's the grade that everyone prefers.

  7. Nope. Pretty sure altruism was the sole motivation. I wouldn't be looking for altruism, I'm mostly looking for a company who provides a service in an ethical fashion and with their customers best interests in mind while they turn a profit. I know, I know, that's asking a lot - but up until one hour ago, the perception of CGC's product was just that. And why has your opinion changed? Because CGC, the grading company with the highest standards, has partnered with Classics, the restoration company with the highest standards? Now the best grading company will be able to provide a larger number of the best services quicker and better. But that makes you nervous. So you will now only use other services, which you already use, and disparage the grading company that already does all of your grading simply because they are now bigger and more efficient. Makes all the sense in the world to me. Bigger - YES. More efficient.... You have to be kidding right?
  8. That's a good point! Will they now disclose pressed book on it's labeling? You'd think that ethically they would have too. They'll know for sure which books are pressed and which aren't.
  9. joey is just fine the way he is. Many of the new services CGC is touting I have offered to my customers for years (and for less). I may not submit often, but I can tell you that with this new turn, I'm even more motivated to send books to guys like Joeypost, KOR or the other guys who have similar services to ensure that when my books go to CGC, I've had an impartial expert looking at them first. Tony from comicsinaflash is a good guy too (thumbs u
  10. There have always been people who claim that CGC "favors" certain individuals and companies with gift grades - it's nothing new. If someone chooses to believe that CGC is lying when they claim that the graders aren't aware of who owns the books they're grading, nothing CGC says or does will ever change that. I, for one, just don't see what the big deal is here. Nelson has been pressing & submitting books to CGC for years - he has zero to do with the actual grading of the books, and nothing I've read so far indicates that that will change in the future. CGC's reputation for impartiality is one of the cornerstones of their company - if it ever got out that books pressed by Classic Incorporated received preferential treatment, it would sink their business model & destroy the company. Why on earth would they risk that? Umm they already are? Show some proof, then. Not preferential treatment in grading. Preferential treatment in the respect that they own a stake in Classics now, so that's the pressing company they prefer.
  11. Whatever they say, however they spin it - it will be purely for monetary motivations, so their statements about the topic are worthless. That's the problem here - objectivity about their product is now gone for good. CGC graded books. That was it. What you brought to their door - in any condition - was purely your responsibility, and they had no stake in how things grade out, whatsoever. Now it is incredibly convoluted with conflicts of interest, upselling technique, and all sorts of grey area about the ethics of preservation/restoration. They have muddied their own waters, opening up their position to be taken advantage of by competitors. And that is exactly what will happen. This topic is going to go on and on and on because it's a hobby-wide concern. The one, single, reputable company who had a majority stake in grading impartiality has just butt:censored:ed themselves in front of everyone on this board. THIS +100

  13. Could this have HUGE ramifications for the whole comic book industry? Or am I over dramatizing this in my head?
  14. there's a difference between endorsing and having a direct financial interest in something. BIG difference. CGC has stepped in a big steaming pile of PGX with this brilliant aquisition. It's actually a pretty good move of corporate raiding that will gain short-term revenue at the expense of the overall reputation of the company, but I would venture a guess that several years from now, the hobby will look back at this and signfiy it as being a detrimental move. It may open the door for another grading service, but that will fragment everything - probably causing oversaturation for graded books by different companies, different opinions - ultimately underminding the respect and importance of a graded book. It will drive prices for graded books and values down for ungraded books - while driving up revenues for those companies. Again - all short term solutions that ignore the long-term ramifications in order to make money. RIght now, they are the top dog - but they've given most people a reason to look to other grading services (whether quietly or vocally) because their ethics will be in question. Another grading service has to come into the market at some point. Yes, there will be turmoil and a sorting out period but it really needs to happen - and it will at some point. The heavy hitters on here and in the comic book industry as a whole need to get together and sort out way to MAKE it happen. If there are reputable people on board, I'll be in from day one.
  15. This won't address CGC's turnaround times at all will it? Will someone PLEASE consider starting up some legitimate competition? The time is right NOW...
  16. If you take the Die Cut cover off, that's what you get, this is 100% scam But it's written in really big type so it must be true
  17. Who are you BTW? Every post you make seems to be spruiking the benefits of the Ghost Variant. Does anyone else think that this stuff (Phantom variant, ghost variant) is better off in the sales thread? Every second post that Larry makes is selling "his" Phantom variant. It gets tiresome sometimes. If there's a variant why can't it be just mentioned in the specific books thread?
  18. Except Nick Spencer has apparently posted o twitter to share his frustration with the print run being under-reported to the tune of 30%. Not sure why he should be upset about this. If they under-report issue 1, then issue 2 is reported to have a much higher print run, this would help to generate buzz for the book. Oh well, missed opportunity there. Would Nick Spencer know, or have any control over , the print run? How would he know that it was larger?
  19. Looking like #1 is hitting $15 territory consistently now: Revival #1 Revival lot X3
  20. Were they trying to sell you a Bedlam variant? Just kidding. Don't be so hard on yourself mate. As they say - shlt happens!
  21. People are going to start kicking the bucket while waiting for their books. I might have to update my will to include the 35 books coming to me in the next 6 months
  22. "refreshed" is an eloquent way to put it mate. Did those "refreshments" cause you a thumping headache today?
