  1. I disagree with you on this topic and I will use a facet of my own past and current life as an example. When I was embarking on my career I looked into the benefits of one career path versus another. I entered into a profession that did not pay as much as my peers but I reap the benefits from once I retire. Sure, a few of my friends travel around the globe, they drive amazing automobiles, own large primary homes and vacation residences among other things that most people "want." I traded that life off for one where i get to retire in a little more than twelve years and I will be WELL taken care of in my retirement. I will be young enough in my retirement to do whatever I want. In fact, I could have accepted a deal that allowed me to retire at 52 instead of 55. No one held a gun to Ditko's or Kirby's head when it came to CHOOSING their career path. They chose to do something they enjoyed but understood the trade off. They understood the deals that they made. In post WWII America there was far more opportunity than there is now especially for Kirby who was a veteran. If he found the deal unsatisfying he could have easily embarked on an entirely different career path or switched to working for another company which both artists did. They sought out the best deals that the could find offered at the time for their line of work. That's the deal they made when they decided to work for Marvel. I firmly believe that while Ditko was extremely talented and Kirby was extremely talented, that neither would have been great without the Marvel machine.
  2. Depends on the thief. In this case it might have been a collector who stole it for their collection. He may have stolen it just to have it. As far as never being able to show it off to people, I have plenty of things that no one sees or knows that I have in my various collections. I feel sorry for Leroy. As he originally stated, while he would like to have the book back, insurance will make him whole. However, more than likely, he may not see that book ever again whether it is because the book does not turn up or because once he is paid out through insurance, if the book is recovered, it could become the property of the insurance company.
  3. No excuse when selling books. However, if you are showing off a "mail call" and are taking a group shot of everything you just got in that package, AND it is not for sale, then I don't really care at all.
  4. I just went through their suspension / moderation thread. SMH... some of their suspensions seem pretty ridiculous, other are of the same people that have been permanently banned here for the same reasons. I am not going to give anyone a public shout out in either category. Let a couple of people wonder if I am talking about them and maybe they will correct themselves. I stopped going there when I became fed up with the way their forums are arranged. I was curious as to who they suspended preemptively because they figured out who he was.
  5. Yes, I know I am about to be slapped for this but... GG > LC
  6. This thread has only one place it will go...
  7. The greatest one (at least in my opinion) is the RHINO that came out on the DTC and then reissued in blue for the first movie. That thing was truly a beast. I had two of them at one point but had to sell them a couple of years ago. Sometimes I think about buying one again.
  8. Most people die alone. Seriously. It is far less common that someone dies surrounded by loved ones.
  9. Well written post and this is lost upon a lot of the fan community. Kirby and Ditko signed the contracts. They knew what they were doing. If they found it that disagreeable or that horrendous then they could have done something else.
  10. I always liked this vehicle since it was one of the few troop carriers. They have not made a troop carrier in almost ten years.
  11. That is almost half of what I know of people actively paying in Williamsburg Brooklyn.
  12. I wish the outrage that people exhibit over Kirby's and Ditko's contracts over the years would exhibit even an ounce of outrage over the people that clip their nails in the subway. There are few things worse than wondering what that little tap was on your skin only to realize the person next to you is clipping their nails. That good sir, is the real crime.
  13. In some cases the artists gifted those pages to fans that wrote in praising their work. In this case I would assume it was given to a fan.
  14. Tagging @jaybuck43 just because he will appreciate the youtube response.
  15. There was one dealer at NYCC that had photocopies of the good stuff in binders. If you asked you could see one or two books at the same time after you pointed them out in the binder. I am probably wrong but I think John Verzyl's booth did that as I believe that was how I bought my ASM 3.
  16. Maybe but I have been made aware and / or read about: How the Lee Kirby FF as well as the Byrne run is a "masterpiece". How the Watchmen and Sandman series are masterpieces of the genre. so... yeah.
  17. Things most people have read that I never read or never had any interest in reading: Watchmen (believe I read a bit and then went meh... I've had the TPB sitting in a box in the basement in the storage room for over a year now) Ultimate Spider-man (I was reading ASM - why read another version of Spider-man?) Preacher (Meh) Sandman (Meh - despite owning several number 1's I read a few books but as far as the whole run, "ain't nobody got time for that") Fantastic Four - (Don't really care about them other than the Torch-Thing relationship which was eloquently developed on the Office with the Jim and Dwight pranks.) Almost all DC comics outside of Superman, Batman, WW, Flash, Lantern and other JLA main characters. What exactly IS a Booster Gold, Atom, Blue Beetle or Starfire? He-Man (Awww... Conan Jr is cuuuuuuuuuute) Conan (I admire the artwork as it is mesmerizing but simply never read the books... the movies were entertaining though.) Spider-man Renew Your Vows (Just undo the Mephisto thing... don't tease me.) Swamp Thing (See above on DC) The Walking Dead (I watch the TV show but somehow have no interest in the comic books.) There are more but I believe I have already given enough rocks to be thrown at me.
  18. That would be between myself and whoever if anyone or thing is listening.
  19. When I started high school, I had a weekend job of maintenance and groundskeeping. (Oh the stuff I learned and how seriously invaluable it is to me today) Anyway... when we gutted a couple of rooms to build new drop ceilings and closets, a flurry of baseball cards fell out of the ceiling. We picked them up and sorted through them. As expected nothing of high value but a bunch of late 60's and early 70's stars and superstars. This was 1989 as it was one of the first things we did when I first got the job. With that, my boss sent us to the card store and had us buy a bunch of baseball card packs. When we finished the ceiling he put the sealed packs of cards up there for the next generation to find.
  20. I was being serious. I can assure you that in your final thoughts or what you believe to be your final thoughts, the last thing that goes through your mind is, "What will become of my copy of ...?"
  21. As I am mostly a collector, a local friend who is a comic collector has the contact information for a board member here to figure out what to do with my stuff should something happen. Beyond that, there is nothing much I can do and after that not much to care about because.... I would be dead. So... I'm dead. There's that.
  22. Saw this at 10:30 at night. Perhaps it was the hour that I saw it but fatigue started to set in and it could have been trimmed down a bit. I thought it was good but not as good as MI5.
