While I was in the college days, I was an intern as the printer/graphic designer for two summers.  I had seen the large paper rolls on the pallets.  There were the labels on the rolls.  Probably the printers were too lazy to remove them before installing the rolls inside the four color printing machines.  The supervisors might not check the uncut printed 8 page papers on the bin.  Sometimes, the printing foreman overlooked them before all uncut printed papers went straight to the binary area.  The supervisors intended to not check all magazines for any defects everyday.  All magazines were immediately shipped out right after the binary area.  Sometimes, it happened.  The sellers could report to the printing or advertising companies about the printing/binary defects but most of time the sellers didn't care about it.

I remembered there was a big dry of 1988. Inside the web-press building was unforgiving hot.   It's like 85 to 87 degrees with all ceiling fans were running at the full speed.  I was inside the graphic design office with A/C.  They might not pay attention at all despite inside so hot.

    Until you got a bonus!

You would think if this was somewhat a common occurence, that there would be more examples of this occuring in comics. Even double covers happens/happened every once in awhile. By the way, do double covers on comics even happen anymore? Are there examples of double covers on comics from let's say the past 5 years?

@Comicdave Dave, does the paper area beneath the loose pieces feel thinner or different to the rest of the overall page?

It doesn't feel any different from the rest of the page. It appears the small pieces of paper had some glue/gum on one side. Similiar to a post it note, which is what left the stain on the other side of the page and made it so you could see the artwork from the other page. I guess the glue deteriorated over time, which is why the pieces came off.

I recall something like this happened recently with a Spawn book.

It was supposedly rare and then someone revealed he had hundreds of copies.

Dropped them on the market and the issue tanked

That's a reason i can't understand why some dealers on eBay will sell certain books that may go for $100-$200 individually, in lots of 10-20 copies. I can understand wanting to get some money now, but they are doing themselves a disservice as well as others trying to sell that comic, by driving down the value of the book. It reminds me of a situation I had to deal with several years ago. My girlfriend and I used to order Snoopy/Peanuts figural items directly from a company to sell on eBay. This was before ebay had the Buy It Now option, so everything was an auction. We would buy some items for let's say $10 wholesale and put them on eBay for $19.99 starting bid. That way if it only sold for $19.99 we would at least double our money. If it went higher, all the better. Unfortunately there were several, too many, other sellers who would sell the same items I was selling, but start the bidding at $10, which is cost, or even less than cost. Inevitably they would end up going for only $10-$15, which would make it difficult for me to even get a single bid on the items I was selling. Why would someone buy something for $20 (the suggested retail price) when they coiud get it for $15 or less?

  4. I was reading up on the history of Heroes Inc. Presents Cannon #1 by Wally Wood wanting to know exactly why the comic was still inexpensive to buy. I had heard that a large number of copies were found in a warehouse. I guess this is correct as apparently 70,000 copies were auctioned off by Heritage in 2005. So that got me to thinking what would happen to the prices of a key comic book if let's say 10000 or more high grade copies were found in a warehouse or some other location? For example how far do you think the price of Hulk 181 or Spider-man 129 or even Iron Man 1 would drop if 10,000+ copies were discovered? Do you think they would still go for over $1000 in high grade or do you think they would plummit to under $100? There would obviously still be a large demand for these comics, but how far would the price have to drop before all copies would be absorbed into collections?

  5. What gets me annoyed as a seller is the opposite end of the spectrum. It's the dealers that list a book as a VG and when I look at the picture i can't see any noticeable defects that would knock the book down that far. I realize there can be some hidden defects, but if a books like a vf/nm book and it's graded a very good, i think it would be important to note in the description why this book is graded this way. As a seller it makes it harder to sell a book that's a fine/very fine for a decent price when several other books look better but are graded lower. When I grade a book I try to be as realistic as i can and not let wishful thinking affect the grade I give. It seems a lot of these big dealers are leaving some money on the table. I understand being conservative, but there is a difference between grading a F/VF book as a VG/F or even a fine and grading a VF+ or better as a VG/F or less.

  6. How do you all feel in regards to slight color touch on comic books? Do you avoid them like the plague? Do you accept them as long as the book is priced accordingly? How much of a percentage should a book with slight color touch be marked down? Let's say you have a Silver Age DC super hero comic graded CGC 9.4 that would possibly sell for around $300 if it was Universal, but it received the Purple Label of Death. The only restoration is slight color touch. Let's assume the book would have graded maybe 9.0 without the color touch. If you are selling, do you price the book as if it were graded a 9.0 or maybe less if you feel the book would have graded lower without the CT? Or do you price it around a VG price? If you are buying, what percentage of the 9.4 price would you be willing to pay assuming you want the book for your collection. Are you willing to pay a higher percentage for a book with CT if it's raw but noted that the book has CT? Curious minds would like to know.

  7. This thread has a lot of interesting finds. Unfortunately this is a story of one that got away or missed it by ..that..much.

I noticed a listing in Facebook Marketplace a couple days ago offering 5 short boxes of comics for $50. I checked it out and of course it was actually $30-$50 each for the comics. He had 5 pictures of the boxes but this is was he showed

comiclotmissed.jpg.7814efd5ff32ac352df75d799087794d.jpgall 5 pictures looked like this. But he at least gave a list of which books were in each box. This is what he wrote.

Looking to get rid of some comics and trade paperbacks. I've collected and inventoried 5 boxes total and this post contains the contents of all 5. Each box will be getting it's own, separate post. Now, here's the deal: The lists of contents are pretty accurate, but I am human. It's possible that I missed or misnumbered something in the box. I'd guess that if I missed anything, it will be that there is an extra comic or two as opposed to something missing. No returns if I made a mistake. If you have a specific question about a box or even single comic, message me, but if someone makes an offer to buy the box before I can get back to you or before you decide, they get it. First offer, first served. A vast majority of the comics are in excellent shape. Some of the older ones can show significant wear but, for the most part, they're in great shape for their age. A high majority of the comics are bagged and boarded but there are some that aren't at all. No, I'm not selling single issues or just a few from a box. I'm not moving contents around. It's the whole box or nothing. Key here is that the boxes are sold as-is.

The first 4 boxes may have had some decent stuff in them, but it was the last box-the X-men box that got my attention. I saw the 94 and thought "naw, he must have meant to write 93 or something", then I saw all the other issue numbers he listed and thought "are these the Byrne issues or are they the modern issues". So I messaged him to see if they were still available (the listing showed it had been up for 3 hours, so I wasn't holding out too much hope) to see if these were from the 1970s-1980s or not. He sent back a picture comiclotmissed2.jpg.c0fd0b00499c9a72e4aea8dafc2b4641.jpgand this was what he showed. Unfortunately he mentioned there was one person ahead of me who was interested, but if he didn't take the X-men box(fat chance) I could get it. After a couple hours he messaged back to say the other guy bought all 5 boxes. If I'd only come across the listing sooner, bummer. It wouldn't be such a big deal except I don't get very many opportunities to pick up something like this for this price (we're talking Byrne X-men books, not to mention issue 266 and some others for roughly 3 comics for a dollar). The collection he had was strange as it ran the gamut from 1970s up to 1990s and maybe a few from the 2000s, but the titles were all over the place and there weren't long runs of many titles.

  8. I haven't had this problem, but the thing i get from eBay a lot is when an item doesn't sell and they suggest a lower price for you.

I see that High Grade comic you had listed for $50 didn't sell. May I suggest relisting for $7.99 as that seems to be the consensus selling point for this item.

Sure, $7.99 is the selling point for all those good to vg copies that have sold.

eBay doesn't seem to take into consideration important things like condition, rarity, or variants when dealing with collectibles.

  9. If you want to make sure the seller actually has the books, just ask him to take a picture of the centerfold or other interior page. If the seller can't or won't provide a picture, then you'll know it's a scam.

  10. When I first started collecting comics back in the 1970s, I was drawn to the art. Like most people I had my favorite artists. But I would notice that some of the comics drawn by my favorite artists didn't look as good as other comics they drew. I eventually realized that an inker can overpower the pencils of a quality artist. I was recently skimming through some bronze age books and noticed there were quite a few inkers who did a lot of work that for me weren't really that good. Or at the least, I didn't care for there style.

Here is my list of my least favorite inkers. These are mostly from the Bronze Age, but if there are some recent inkers you don't care for, feel free to include them.

What least favorite inker list would be complete with out Vince Colletta. I know he was very prolific and he could practically ink an entire book in 1 night, but in most cases it looked like it. Many a times I would buy a new comic and see the name of a favorite artist listed as penciller, but then see the name of Vince Colletta and I would say to myself, "that's a waste of a good artist".

Here are more inkers I was not fond of.  Jack Abel, Joe Giella, Tex Blaisdell, Frank Giacoia, Frank Chiaramonte, Frank Springer.

What were some of the inkers you dreaded seeing listed in the credits of a comic book?

I sold this, It's a super tough book in 9.8. I offered it to a board member when I first got it for $350 and it was on his want list, said it wasn't centered enough, so I put it on eBay. Took about a month and half to sell.  Sold a 9.4 for $99.95 same day as I listed it.

People who say copper is junk are really missing the boat, there's gold in them copper mines!

Are there some common printing defects for this book? Why is it tough in grade? It's not a black cover.
