  1. Set of 6 Christmas-themed covers by Cole. To the best of my knowledge this is a complete set. Some of these are VERY tough books, especially in grade. $1000 for all 6. That's a deal.
  2. As a slavish Cole fanboy I would love to vote him #1 but he did very little interior work and I can't vote someone who mainly did covers as the greatest artist overall. From an art perspective I find Cole's work with color and his ability to be eye catching to be really artistically appealing, though I find his figure work to be somewhat lacking. His surreal and Sci fi covers are most appealing to me. With that said, he did produce some real mediocre work, which is bound to happen when you draw something like 1500 covers. Baker was second only to Frazetta in his ability to capture a moment, except Baker had a unique way of pulling the viewer into the scene to evoke a sense of nostalgia that I don't think any other artist, of any age, can touch. Unfortunately he also didn't produce much interior work and what he did doesn't really stand out.
  3. Man that's a weird one. I thought i knew all of the reprints but I'm not familiar with this one. No cover price. Very strange.
  4. I've had various non-paying bidders on MCS. After the three weeks are up, the item goes back into my consignment list and I can either set a BIN price or assign it to the next available auction. It's not a perfect system but I have had instances where the item sells for a higher price the second time around.
  5. That's a bummer. I was planning on using my comics to barter for my freedom from our new Martian overlords.
  6. In terms of overall volume, panel to panel storytelling, creativity and general artistry, Barks is far, far ahead of everyone in the Golden Age, and also the Silver through Modern Ages. McCay probably takes it for the Platinum Age.
  7. The comic industry was teetering on death in the late 50s and the late 70s and it was a real wasteland in the late 90s. Like most things in life, it has its ebbs and flows.
  8. Not many on the census. I know how much I paid for this copy and I see that a 5.0 sold on Heritage in 2021 for $1000 Popular Teen-Agers #9 (Star Publications, 1951) CGC VG/FN 5.0 | Lot #17808 | Heritage Auctions (ha.com)
  9. Takes: First takeit in the thread wins and immediately trumps all ongoing PM negotiations. I reserve the right to overrule takes in the event that a PM deal is concluded and I hadn't yet had a chance to mark an item sold. Any variation of "takeit" counts. Please do not edit takeits and please do not commit to buy unless you intend to follow through. Payment: Zelle, Check or MO only on these. Who can buy: No Hall of Shamers or Probies, or anyone on my personal list. Shipping: Free within the US. International at cost. Returns: Three days' return shipping from receipt. Buyer is responsible for shipping cost back unless item was damaged in transit.
  10. I want Shortboxed to thrive, as the technology is so far ahead of everything else out there in terms of a comics selling platform. However, I agree that books simply do not sell. It's hard to understand. I still list books on there occasionally because it's so easy but I never get offers and watchers ignore offers I send out. As a buyer I used to scroll the new listings every day but abandoned that once they allowed raw books. It's turned into a dumping ground for drek, unfortunately. I think that was a tactical mistake on their part.
  11. I sent three books in for the current Collectors Comics auction, to test them out. I find their website pretty annoying but they are easy enough to work with. I'm also bidding on their auction for the first time.
