  1. Humor digests! Unmined, though I'm surprised they have many of them up at the GCD. Even better with babes in them ala the Humorama line
  2. That's a heck of a flea market find. I read it recently and was slightly disappointed (after years of built up expectations), but it's not a stretch to call it a first graphic novel (though preceded by the likes of Milt Gross' He Done Her Wrong or the woodcut novels of Lynd Ward). There's another one in this series. Not mine
  3. I'll just sit back, watch, maybe cry a little bit There might be a darkhorse or two in here for the lead besides the two you mention...We shall see.
  4. A similar composition, Roger Kastel seems to like this angle Interestingly, I'm finding a lot more eBay sellers listing these with a splash as the first auction image. Those of us who collect these know that a good splash is a huge draw, but I'm still surprised with the choice of those over a cover.
  5. How good is this one from Spain Rodriguez (RIP) right after Nixon gets elected This last one is a gorgeous copy. Think it's the only Rat I've picked up The centerfold
  6. So good! Fantastic composition plus the double metaphor of the pitcher with the cannon and the battery as the pitcher/catcher combo.
  7. Late era Fight Stories, George Gross. Decent copies. Fight Stories is a favorite pulp, a repository of boxing and other fight lore. More famous issues, not quite so nice Bergey cover plus REH story https://www.mediafire.com/file_premium/szannipf0xbec5i/Fight_Stories_v03n04_%281930-09.Fiction_House%29%28Darwination_vs_McCoy%29.cbr/file https://archive.org/details/fight-stories-v-03n-04-1930-09.-fiction-house-darwination-vs-mc-coy-ia The v01n01, always a target for the magazine scanner, even in this condition, Abell Sturges https://www.mediafire.com/file_premium/nk967ntthgn2z4q/Fight_Stories_v01n01_%281928-06.Fiction_House%29%28D%26M%29.cbr/file https://archive.org/details/fight-stories-v-01n-01-1928-06.-fiction-house-d-m-ia McCoy with the edits on both issues.
  8. Ah, thanks, Doc, for chiming in with a good question on the digests. The size is definitely a thing. My opinion is they don't have to be squarebound, and that we are generally talking about a decently high page count. I think you are right that the term comes from Reader's Digest but the way we use it doesn't incorporate the "digestable" aspect you mention. A neat cross post to this one I noticed here on the Timely thread and its tie to Captain America Comics original numbering: Another digest title I've done some digging into lately, from Lev Gleason but also previously owned by Arthur Bernhard (comics ties on both these guys): http://www.philsp.com/data/data450.html#READERSSCOPE That type of digest aside, a number of the pulps switched over to a digest format as the traditional pulp faded away. Western Story, The Shadow, etc. When I think of digests, I think of Manhunt, but I know the SF community is huge in their love of the 50s and 60s titles. I'm not the sort to put my books in the boxes, but I do get a kick out of finding the right size bag and boards for the many different sizes of pub grouped into the digest category. And, yeah, CGC is gonna need a different case. And if I see any of you mooks boxing up pocket magazines, the shank's coming out >< A couple of recent "digest" scans I've put up at the IA and Flickr. In my Flickr placards, you can find download links and IA links under the cover if it is a full scan. The Dell is new, the Army Romances an old scan with McCoy But, really, I've been wondering where even to post pocket magazine stuff, "non-comic" magazines I guess... EDIT: and since we are talking pulps getting CGC'd. My predicition is the average SF pulp will be the type to get the biggest average spike in interest/value. There are enough of them to be collectible, the cover art is fantastic with comics crossover appeal, and many have been kept in high grade.
  9. And, looking more closely, the alien appears to have some strange appendage between his legs, as the dragon's fin does not belong on that black cat
  10. I've picked out a couple issues on this thread for my hunting list, some good ones! I noticed this funky double use: This one's at MCS right now graded FN, the colors looked faded to me - rather have a lower grade with better colors (not one I'm hunting btw) This one I suppose I am hunting, as we need a complete and better scan for the museums.
  11. Cheers, Alien. I didn't post a reference to the paperback since I thought you might chime in, though I hoped you'd have the ID I know how that goes. Sometimes just being able to identify artist's style and the grouping of covers is all we get. I agree about the superiority of the paperbacks in terms of the presentation of the original cover paintings, even if I vastly prefer a pen and ink cover to one of the paperback jobbers when it comes to my Avon comics. Reform School Girl remains one of the unscanned grails for us comic scanners, mostly because of the rarity and price tag. Which must be so high for the iconic JD and sleaze aspect as much as anything. Not my copy (because it wouldn't be in a damn box if it was, I like to play with my toys, and sorry if I offend by teasing on this point, considering where I am ) The colors on the PB are so much better on this one, you can see even on this copy jim linked on the pb thread (4.5?! Don't know how paperbacks are graded but I don't know how VG happens with large rust/moisture spots coming through at the staples). On the other hand, who would expect such a lass to stay all shiny, a little beat down and weathered seems appropriate
  12. Tex Blaisdell inner front cover and lead story. Avon has the best gun molls. Watch out boys, these broads are taking over https://www.mediafire.com/file_premium/h9a74l31q4wm3he/Prison_Break_03_(1952-04.Realistic)(Darwin-DREGS).cbr/file https://archive.org/details/prison-break-03-1952-04.-realistic-darwin-dregs-ia
  13. I don't know if we are calling the men's adventure magazines pulps for the purpose of your research (I think they're pulps), but I consider this one the most iconic shark portrayal pulp cover ever. Mort Kunstler, Adventure 1956-08 sorry for the little image, not my copy and I couldn't find bigger -
  14. Pep Stories v05n06 (1929-06.King) cover Bolles Do excuse my grubby copy. When it comes to scarce girlies, I will take any copy I can get. No terror here, this shark seems as tame as a puppy dog
  15. Yeah, I'd think these would be big with the paperback crowd just because of the similarity in styles with the gritty noir feel. Looking around, it might be hard to put a complete run together of these lower tier digests - I really don't know how many copies got printed/kept. You can easily do it for Manhunt, but it's legendary. There's a handful of the covers I like (including yours here), but this is my fave (unfortunately another small image)
  16. It's the attacker's lop-sided eyes in that Pursued I noticed, but, damn, those are some tiny hands That's the second issue of Pursued (a very bad digest name), and the first issue straight up reprints a Manhunt cover (albeit a good one, 1953-04) excuse the small and crappy image, not mine, from Phil's index: even the title is chintzy, barely different from Pursuit, a Star title that ran longer and switched over to the alternating bi monthly title switch with Hunted for a bit (Sep-1953 – Nov-1956). I apparently don't hold a single issue of this magazine. Check out the cover index if my description of the publication history makes no sense http://www.philsp.com/mags/pursuit.html There's actually a number of covers I like in there. A sample issue (n18 1956-11) scanned by Gorgon here includes a story from August Derleth: https://www.mediafire.com/file_premium/tjmrtdo2y7s71v9/Pursuit_Detective_Story_Magazine_n18_%281956-11.Star_Editions%29%28Gorgon776%29%28c2c%29.cbr/file
