Comics, Pulps, and Paperbacks: Why such a discrepancy in values?
Darwination replied to Reno McCoy's topic in Pulp Magazines
So, this may be a dicey question. How much do I have to be on the lookout for abridged versions of novels when it comes to the vintage paperbacks? -
-
I'm curious about the girlies - did anybody end up with the lion's share of those?

Have Paperbacks become the “next big thing”?

Working some eBay listings tonight and came across a paperback-related item: It's a 1951 mob/juvenile delinquency/drug hysteria sort of publication, a one shot mag from Designs Publishing Corporation. Photos of the Kefauver organized crime hearings, gangland slayings, posed models passed out around drug dens or running from cops, etc. It's penned entirely by one N.R. De Mexico. https://archive.org/details/vice-over-america-1951.-designs-publishing-corporation-darwination-mc-coy https://www.mediafire.com/file_premium/2dnn5o5hib3vrgg/Vice_Over_America_%281951.Designs_Publishing_Corporation%29%28Darwination-McCoy%29.cbr/file Anyways, N.R. De Mexico, pseudonym of Greenwich Village writer Robert Campbell Brag, might ring a bell with you pb freaks for these: You can click that pick to go to mad rocker Mick C*cksidge's Flickr entry, the placard has some neat info on how the paperback was represented in congressional hearings on "low literature." Or you can read a review of the book here from my man at Pulp International. The date is concurrent with Vice Over America, so it might be the same publisher since a lot of firms were in both rackets. The later version might be more recognizable to pb collectors? Bragg also penned these (posting what I think are first printings, there are later printings of the last two as well): 1944 (artist ID?) 1951 1952 (pulpcovers has this ID'd as George Gross, is that right? I see it but don't see it) More bio at Booktryst (blog of Stephen Gertz who wrote Dope Menace which I'm guessing is an important book in the pb scene): http://www.booktryst.com/2009/11/will-real-nr-de-mexico-please-stand-up.html Anyways - back to listing -

Supporting the KKK ?!?!? -
Yeah, first name looks like Owen (possibly Gwen), middle portion looks like Lou or IouI (maybe the most perplexing part of the sig), then the Sylos. For some reason I feel like there's a k in there (hence my greek suspicion). I kind of think the middle part is actually involved in the last name. Ugh.

ENOCH BOLLES ....and other fine Pin-Up art
Darwination replied to jimjum12's topic in Pulp Magazines
I think the McCauley is going to do surprisingly well. Reefer Girl might just go crazy, too. Did a boardie happen to win an obscure Bolles this weekend on eBay? I was underbidder and have a proposition if you did... (not the sort of thing you'll see me asking too often ) PM ME But while I'm here, Bolles and one of a *lovely* batch of Judge I scanned and bagged tonight: -
I'd forgotten about this one I got a little while back and found it today getting pressed in my bookshelf. A little ragged, but the price was right, and I'm done explaining myself to you high grade dilettantes You just don't see one of these from the all white cover run of Paris Nights too often. Very cool interiors, but the real bonus (besides the fact I'm crazy for the cover artist) is a Kirk Wolff story, pseudonym for Kenneth Fearing.

Not a new one, but one I missed scanning the cover for back when I got it (and I'll go ahead and scan the whole thing for the IA and pulpscans since I managed to find the mofo after digging through half my boxes and there's no representative scan yet). Was reminded I had it by the big inner back cover scan on a Dell pub I stuck up over in non-comic magazines. -
New one, first Heritage win in a long time, one dollar (forty after BP and shipping heh heh), gorgeous cover: 1931, a Dell one-shot pub. Magazine width but extra tall. Heritage had the date as 1941 (show em something they haven't seen, and they're clueless half the time). I can't make out the signature, thinking a Greek name, but it's killing me, not one of the usual suspects working on the scattered Dell pulps at the time but maybe an artist working on one of the Hollywood mags. Some interior illustration inside, but nothing to write home about. Lots of cool horoscopes, though: nice ad on the ibc for Scotland Yard, kind of a neat pulp (I'll post a cover over in the pulps for it):

Love it, a slightly more wholesome looking butterfly than the movie tie-in edition https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082122/mediaviewer/rm33266689/?ref_=tt_ov_i -

I went lookin' too, PF, didn't see it at GCD, they're missing some covers. I don't think it's a Cole or anything, but I do wanna see what it looks like. -

Awesome image, some of those covers look really good. -
Ha, a poor image of a good scan. I wish I had the MCS original, but they take down the bigger images once a book sells (if it is non-auction). I admit I didn't look exhaustively, though, when I indexed that title. The gent at pulpcovers may be hosting a larger .jpeg Definitely a very cool cover 👌 Bolles has at least a couple earlier takes on this pose. I forget what Bob called this stance in PM. Maybe the long board skaterboarders have a version, too?
