  1. Geez, they are really going at it! The title lettering/coloring is fantastic against the yellow. Something a little weird about the photo - don't think it's out of register, but that's kind of cool, too. Great graphics on that one. The red dress and fingernails against the the blue sky and penciled white stars? I'm gonna have to penalize it for the fact dude's lost his shirt, kind of weird
  2. I love 10 Story Book. Sure, I don't go crazy without the painted covers but the photography and design are awesome and the content is unique. Maybe Santa Claus will bring me some new issues. (not my copy, but look - cuties for Christmas!) Hmm, Xmas girlie pulps might be hard. I may have a few, but they may not be the brightest copies On the other hand, one like this might be one of the only copies around, early Pep Stories?? sheeeit, December 1927. There's four Peps from about the first year I haven't ever seen covers for, much less seen for sale. I actually don't think the color is too far faded on it, as it's a pink and not red. A redhead in my stocking, does this mean I've been a good boy this year?
  3. I'm liking a lot of the Baumhofer Doc Savages, not really a title I collect tho. Some neat Ghost Stories, too. The horror/menace selection is great, but not really books I collect, and I'll never recover from having seen the beauties in the thread here The Thrill Books are super cool - I can see one of them is getting action. The run of Weird Tales is something else.
  4. Pulp Magazines Showcase Auction Featuring the Malcolm Edwards Collection at Heritage coming up in a couple days, a big one. A ton of books, esp. Doc, Ghost Stories, Horror Stories, Operator 5, Magic Carpet/Oriental/a ton of Weird Tales, Terror Tales. At least a few books I'm not sure I've seen. Not too many in super high grade but just a huge collection. Can the market absorb so much pulp at once? Probably I'd be hard pressed to pick out the top 3 books, but you'd think there will be bidders battling over some of the early Weird Tales.
  5. I've noticed this one a few times on the Bay, as an iconic LBJ face to face with a hippie painting. I don't doubt some of his Cabella's catalogs were around my dad's house, either. Looks like it's in great shape, are you gonna reframe?
  6. Ha, great one, John Prentice. Love cigarette girls. I'll have to read some of these, as I know I like the Hillman crime books. There's a number of good covers (neat colors, a trademark of the Hillman line in general, and almost all Prentice art), and they've got a little extra naughty like this cover. Looks like the only Hillman romance outside of Dr. Anthony's Love Clinic which bears investigation in its own right o.O You often see a young lady writing her name 2 or 3 different places on a romance. Stay out of my comics, brothers!!! As for scarcity, I can't figure it out. You see the sales numbers for something like Young Love in the comics or Love Story in the pulps and they are absolutely crazy high. But then you have trouble finding issues. I'd guess these Hillmans did fairly well (kind of surprised at just 25 issues) and are more common than many titles. The condition thing is weird, too. I get that fanboys haven't been socking them away in bags and boards forever like they do with the men in tights, but some lines seem to exist in higher grades than others. I'd guess some of these books don't come to market because who wants to let go a beautiful Fine or better romance for 20 or 30 bucks just cuz no one is watching?
  7. Wouldn't call this one romance exactly, a funky hybrid of music, comics and pulp romance sort of illo spreads. I was surprised to see just one issue in the census of this third issue (not sure that means it's scarce) Guy Madison on the cover Ogden Whitney in a splash spread that wouldn't be out of place in a romance pulp (but in lovely color)
  8. 81 is definitely Colletta, a rough but nice one - dude's eyes are weird, though.
  9. Off-topic mebbe, but I name-checked Cole on a blog post this week regarding William Ekgren who did a few very distinctive covers for St. John. Cole is about the only comparison I could make: http://darwinscans.blogspot.com/2023/12/william-ekgrens-cosmic-psychadelia-st.html
  10. Was taking some eBay photos and was surprised to see some definite Baker. Lovers #71 Sure enough, listed in the GCD. I knew he did some Atlas westerns, but I didn't realize he did romances there, too.
  11. Gorgeous! I'm going to look into the artist, love the look on her face - complicated. I'm not sure where I found this image, but it's a fave - Brooks reading a Smart Set with a Henry Clive cover:
  12. I'm feeling guilty posting so many of these here because they might be off-topic. I consider them pulp, but they're not fiction pulps. The school of art is a little different, too. I don't hunt them like I used to, but I do keep an eye out. There's always been interest in them even if I can't start to compare the market for magazines to the insanity of comics. The flipside is that comics have been treated very well in terms of storage and simply holding on to them which isn't true of magazines. On the other hand, any schmoe that looks at one of these great painted covers knows they are pretty cool and will separate them out from beater lots. They're some of my favorite books in my collection because of the girls and also because they are so damn big and beautiful. I also like that a lot of the women are more than just victims which isn't the case in a lot of comic and paperbook and pulp art. George Gross' smirking prostitutes aren't denied their humanity or character just because of their low station. Even a tied girl without much agency like this one isn't exactly screaming in terror
  13. yep Still a mostly great image system here, though. Moire must just show up for certain widths as images get sized down...
  14. Hmm, shows for me. I usually will toss an image on Discord if I see it showing moire through the site system. Not to mention you get better resolution. Will do it direct tho: Moire in the preview - lets see if shows when I submit -
  15. Something about it reminds me of this horrible/wonderful cover (not my copy)
