I notice that the grades are numerical and resemble comic book grades. Will the new graded pulps be graded like comics or more like the Bookery Guide?
Other than like squarebound comics they are a totally different animal.
I have found the Bookery standards to be very accurate and very easy to grade from.

On my doorstep today, not mine, but a couple of issues from a crowdsourced buy in a scanning group.  Pretty nice, I don't think I own any Manhunt this late.  Cover artist on both is Tom O'Sullivan per the contents page.  I'd never even seen issues with cover credit given before, also lots of artist signatures in the illos which I hadn't seen before either.  Good for the artists to get a little credit for the success of the mag, too.  Found nothing on O'Sullivan but the scribbly style is kind of neat.  Saw Ric Estrada inside.  These will show up at the Internet Archive in the near future

Not really familiar with how that stuff works, but I'd guess a piece between the first page and the cover at the very least might help prevent leakage to the cover. You might need a good number of sheets?
The Library of Congress made the call long ago to cut covers and microfilm the paper cuz of space and stink concerns.  I handle a lot of pulps, and they are generally in pretty bad shape to say the least, but I honestly don't know what high grade collector's copies look like of tens and twenties pulps.  Most any mags I have from the 20s is only in good shape if it's on a slick paper.  Imo it's already a four alarm fire in terms of getting quality scans of early pulps, especially low circulation jobbers.  Still, it's not as bad as straight up newsprint.  There are tabloids I hunt that had big circulations that are basically already gone like lost films...

I kind of like that the legs take center stage for once
So nice they used it twice (this November ish the later printing, lots of that going on at FH towards the end)

Definitely a lot of great good girl covers in Lariat, and where there's all that rope there's bound be be bondage. And cattle rustlers have branding irons, too :O

The bad guys are always missing a tooth, just like me :'(
Half the time, when they aren't tied up, they look like they could be (this is one of my faves from the title)

I looked in my files, and I have a lone issue, not sure if it came in a lot or if I was lured by the black silk.  Usually I like a little more life left in a broad.  There's a few good covers where the girl features as a headstrong heroine.  This is not one of them.

Lariat's an outlier in terms of prices for a late-era Westerns, but it's not too hard to see why

Sat down with the above ish in the Smokehouse last night.  I didn't go too crazy on the cover, as nasty yellows are always a pain and sometimes slapping lipstick on a mule is about all you can do.

Here are a few pics of slab pulps and a review of what is coming - done for a fellow boardie we all Love The plan from Matt is to start submission of pulps very soon. I'm not the one to tie anyone down to an exact day or week. They are still testing the water and getting input from pulp collectors. I'm just putting this out for  fellow board members. The slabs are just examples and the grading codes are just for show. The slabs present great in my opinion with different depths for thicker pulps and rounded inner wells to make room for overhangs and such. The presentation was amazing in my eyes and I have been around awhile! .The pulp is safe and secure in there and viewable on all sides for the fan base. There are some amazing history and covers in this genre and can be welcomed as a way to save the copies for future collectors. I will be watching this as I always do and see what happens, good or bad, with this massive undertaking.

I went looking to see if I had some of the preliminary material from The Atlantic in 1875 that went into Life on the Mississippi, but I guess I don't.  I do have at least the first installment of Pudd'nhead Wilson from The Century Illustrated Magazine, December '93

Of course, in my fashion, I've acquired a coverless copy

Don't let the rough looks fool you.  These 19th century magazines are in pretty great shape paper-wise.  They'll be around long after the pulps have crumbled to dust.  I'm pretty sure I have more Twain in the magazines, but the 19th century covers don't lend much of a clue as to the contents.
I'd probably have more 19th century mags if they had figured out that changing the cover every month is a good idea...

Smokehouse Monthly (riffing on the need for toilet paper in the outhouse) was a humor digest (I'd call it a magazine) coming out of the popularity of Fawcett's Captain Billy's Whiz-Bang which pretty much launched a magazine (and later paperback) empire.  That Wild Cherries above is a humor digest, too.  Although it does have a bit of fiction.  That title usually gets grouped in with the girlie pulps because of the style of the cover art and art deco elements, but it has a lot in common with a magazine like this one (not to mention some common artists).

The early Whiz-Bang are almost all text, but it quickly started to add illustrations and photos and maybe move to a format with shorter jokes.
There's definitely some covers on these lines of digests that I'd put in the school of girlie pulp art (not like this one I've posted, though, as it's so cartoonish).  And some girlie pulp regulars like Peter Driben would feature regularly on the cover of later digests in the Timely Atlas line.

Only the finest tastes in upholstery from readers of men's adventure magazines
Four issues on this title, all Cole covers.  I'm going to have to buy one of these Star issues just to get a taste of an L.B. Cole produced sweat mag.  This is probably my fave in the series.
Not to be confused with Man's Daring that started in 59 from Candar.
Or the approximately 27 other titles in Devine's Guide that begin with the word "Man's"
