  1. If you let it, M:tG will consume your life (and wallet). Glad the store is working out and it's bringing in the collections just like you wanted. Doing WW Chicago this year? Yeah. Mtg is fun. Ive had people drop off mtg collections. Not buying them, they just drop them off. Have like 10,000 mtg cards. Not doing any shows this year i dont think. Wanted to go to baltimore for retailer summit but probably not. Keep an eye on the Magic Cards as prices fluctuate like mad. I am still buying and selling them as there is good money in it, but always have to see how much things are going for that day. One time had a card jump from 50 cents to $35 over night. yeah. i have a magic guy that takes care of magic for me. i wish i could trade comics for mtg cards but none of the mtg players at my store like comics.

  3. Been too busy to post. Store, kid turned 13 months last month. Buying lots of stuff. Saw a collection last week of 98 long boxes. One box had 4 copies of asm 300. almost every box had a book like that. Bought a longbox of stuff last week for $60. Had a nice asm 298,299, and 300 and hulk 340. Doing magic the gathering. Never played until the store opened. Now im getting addicted to it. Too busy. To respond to messages as well.
  4. That's a great deal; must be the "store effect"? People around here want $100 per longbox and it is definitely all junk. He was a collector. Don't think he really kept up on values.
  5. haven't had an update in a while. had sort of a soft opening. haven't gotten any new stuff from diamond yet. just got my account last week actually. The purpose of opening a store front was for buying collections mainly and I bought my first collection last week. 33 long boxes of stuff. looked through 5 long boxes and did not see anything worth much before making an offer of $350 but closed the deal at $420. included 2 small boxes of toys. the next day I went through the boxes and pulled out 4 long boxes of better stuff. out of the 4 long boxes of stuff I pulled out half a short box of the best stuff. NM 98, Preacher 1, TOS 57, Brave and the bold 29, alias 1, NM 87, and other keys that I can't really remember right now. Was a nice buy. bought some transformers the day after. just really tired. been here everyday for weeks but its really fun.
  6. Not answering your questions but, if you are going to start doing this, I suggest having your own done for you. Contact a company that manufacturers this type of stuff and have them make you a bunch. it will be cheaper for you.
  7. Can't you set up a regular PO box to send all your business mail to? That way the only that gets sent to your store box will be junk mail. That is a situation you can control, and that $25 for the rekey would have paid for about 6 months of a decent sized PO box. I did have a po box. thing is, the po box for my store would be 30 minutes away and as w16227 said, doesnt help me now . Can't you set up a regular PO box to send all your business mail to? Any chance your state has an online site??? - Illinois - you get hardcopy but also all of your documentation is downloadable. I do not know specifically - if your state would allow a printout of the certificate for operating - but a pdf should work for diamond. Ill have to check. My accountant did it so ill ask him to check as well. At this point, i just want my mail. Even if its all junk mail and the cert, i just want it. I missed the post carrier the other day by 5 minutes bad news for you, but much appreciated advice for future store owners thanks for the update nice update. the key guy just showed up and gave me the keys.

  9. So a little advice which is probably stupid but i had to learn the hard way. Ask your realtor or landlord about the mail early on. I thought the mail would be delivered to the store. There is actually a post box outside the building that isnt in view. I had my accountant get me a new resale certificate and it was sent to the store. I find out you need the post office to come by and rekey it. After i pay the 25 for a rekey i find out its only one guy, once a week and in my case, he's taking a 2-3 week vacation. Anywho, so it looks like i wont get my resale certificate anytime soon. You need it to order from diamond . Also needs to be in the store somewhere. I asked if they could grab my mail and hold it, the guy i talked to told the carrier and, i kid you not, the carrier thought he was joking.
  10. Its been a real person_without_enough_empathy lately. Wil post more later.
  11. Havent been updating this so much, been busy doing stuff. I said in another thread, nickel and dime. I have paid so much in 1 time fee's and set up fees and deposits. Even silly things like a chair. You go to ikea or walmart and get a folding chair for $20 or something. Go to any place that sells to businesses and they are $130. I also said in a other thread, im really cheap. Super cheap. I dont buy ketchup when they give packets away at fast food places. Same with sugar, napkins etc. Fixtures are super expensive. But i have picked up great things for super cheap or free. Im getting more fixtures today but in all i have spent under $2000 for fixtures. I definitely could have spent less. But ill go back a fight for a discount later. Hired a moving company to move back stock long boxes into the store. Im not pulling my back out, no sir. I thought i had like few long boxes than i did. I sold some in a bulk sale but they ended up moving over 200 long boxes. Going to sleep
  12. Negative. That side isnt so to general public, just a side way to get behind the building and the main road in in front of the store. I can leave it free.
  13. Little update After opening the wall to where games will be played.
  14. . Ill give them the back room probably. Ty Im might do that at some point.
  15. Update So here are a few photos of before the small renovation. The wall on the right will be opened up, there is a back room behind that wall and this will give me more space. Behind that door is a hallway. On the right is the backroom that will be opened up with the removal of some wall. On the left is an office area. Ill use it as my office. There is also a restroom in the very back. This is that back room. It will now be opened up to the front. It used to be some sort of employee break room. Renovations will be done this week and will post pictures after that.
  16. Good luck with your new store. Please tell me that you had some legal counsel when signing your lease. There is always some tricky language involved with them and almost everything in the lease is negotiable. For instance, your ownership of the space and contents ends at the walls. Most leases are written so that once something is physically attached to the drywall or facade (slatboard, fixtures, signage etc.) it immediately becomes the property of the landlord and you cannot remove it if you were to terminate the lease for some reason in the future. This can be negotiated through build-out allowances where the landlord essentially pays you for any building improvements you make via your initial remodeling. Sometimes you can get that allowance in the form of free rent for X number of months, and sometimes they will cut you a check at the time that you receive your occupancy permit. Another thing to look into are the requisites for insurance. The landlord will require you to carry certain amount of liability coverage. The costs for these can vary but, depending on the lease's requirements you can run into very high unexpected costs. We had a situation where one of our landlords required us to carry a certain amount of worker's comp insurance on our employees. We already had it in place, but that was something unique to that particular landlord and would have been a large unexpected expense if we had not. All fantastic advice. Thanks a lot mr. B. The owner of the building is a friend of my wife's mother, so after yelling at him in korean for a few days, she got him to make the lease a korean one, not an american one. I did have a legal buddy look at the lease and for a fee, he said it was good. Would have been nice if it was free but nothing ever is.
  17. there are stores that do mtg tournaments and such. I will be doing the mtg stuff, would be a fool to not do it. There is competition in my area, definately. The store will do what the store does, sell new comics and cards, but im looking to get key books and leads. Something only 1 store in my area does well. The other stores seem like they like comics or have a passion for them.
  18. Yeah. 9 am to 9pm. Congrats on choosing to open a store. My kids want to open one and in just under two years we have built up to around 30 long boxes and I am going to donate all of my toys, 500+ trades/novels, gaming cards, games, Lego collection, etc. My son also has a room full of collectibles to add. We will keep adding to it each year until ready to open.I hope all works out well for you. Thanks buddy. Its pretty easy to get long boxes. Last bulk buy i had was 80 long boxes. At $7 a long box. If he wants to open a store, he sounds like he already has enough. Tell him to just do it. None of the comic/gaming places around here open until 10:00 a.m. or later. Of course, that means you're there before 10:00 a.m. Stores without gaming tables close at 7:00 p.m., +/- an hour. Some are either closed Sundays (not recommended) or have reduced hours (open at noon, close at 5:00 p.m.). So the question is, will you have gaming tables? My store hours are going to be 10-8 pm.Ill have gaming tables to start and add more gaming stuff as i go along, more tables chairs etc. My work hours are different than the store hours. Im used to 12 hour days/7 days a week/365 days a year, working with my wife. Her mother is korean and doesnt believe in anything less than a 12 hour work day. There is always work to do when you own your own business. As she would say, "if you not working 12 hours in a day, 365 days a year, you poor.". She told me that the first day i worked at my wife's store.
  19. This will be tough at first. Havent had a real job since i quit working at my wife's store 5 years ago. It will be tough to transition back into the 9-9 work grind again.
  20. I decided on the final location because of price, not bad, and its located next to some places that bring in kids. The remodel is opening up a wall. Store name will be different. Youmechooz was when a while ago, name is 2 dogs of ours spliced together. This name will be very basic. Would post more but like i said, 2 wisdom teeth pulled out earlier this week and it it kinda painful right now. I will say, for georgia, my steps for opening the store were 1. Sign lease for store location including deposit and first month 2. Got general liability insurance for location 3. Transfered electricity into my name, includes deposit 3. Already have sales tax I do need to 1. Finish diamond account 2. Get new business license, i already have one, but need a new one for new address. 3. Buy everything ill need for store, tables, chairs, tv, etc. 4. Paint 5. More stuff 6 comics? Falls into 1. Finish diamond account setup Thanks buddy. My dream is to never work again
