  1. I'm all for that, because with these collecti-flippers and folks recognizing the cost effectivness of these books, it will soon be a free-for-all. Don't bother with the marketplace, either my friends. I just sent my mid-grades to shiver, but I have a few multiples in high CGC grade. Anyone want to trade PM me! Sounds like a novel idea, and here's what I have to offer for trade: Dark Mansion of Forbidden Love CGC 9.2 (White Pages) DC Special 4 CGC 9.2 (Neal Adams Mystery cover) House of Mystery 212 NM (Kaluta cover) House of Mystery 224 NM/NM- (100 page, Wrightson/Adams) Super DC Giant 23 CGC 9.4 (Unexpected, Top Census) Unexpected 106 CGC 9.4 (Top Census) Weird War Tales 2, 4, 5 (all about VF) And here's what I'm looking for (NM- or better unless noted, may consider nice looking VF/NM's): House of Mystery 175, 178, 179, 183, 186, 187, 189, 191, 192, 203, 221 House of Secrets 81, 84, 86, 89 Phantom Stranger 3, 4, 9, 10 Tomahawk 117, 118, 119, 121, 128, 129 (VF/NM ok on these) Unexpected 111, 112, 114, 121, 124 Witching Hour 2, 4, 8, 15
  2. Yeah, I agree he would make a great addition to any potential grading team that might be formed in the future! And where does it say that? Page? Gosh...hard to remember the page...just click on "show all" and read the entire thread again, I'm sure you'll find it in there somewhere?
  3. Yeah, I agree he would make a great addition to any potential grading team that might be formed in the future!
  4. This has been discussed before, and the conclusion was no Adams. However, it looks suspiciously like Adams to me. If it was not Adams then why would he have personally signed the cover.... You guys might have discussed and dismissed but obviously adams believed he worked on it. I didn't personally dismiss it as I recall the book being noted as an Adams cover by sellers on ebay back in 98/99, regardless of OS's notations (and they did backtrack on his art credits on Our Army at War 244, so they are mere, fallable mortals), as well as the fact it looks like Adams. OS doesn't note the cover artist, and the GCD notes it as: Cover Credits: Carmine Infantino (Pencils) George Roussos (Inks) ? (Colors) ? (Letters) Also, Neal Adams own checklist doesn't list it, although I have to wonder if Spyda compiled the list from published references (before asking his dad to do another Green Lantern sketch so he could sell it on ebay for $600-800) as opposed to Neal compiling the list from memory and/or some official payment records. That said...let's see that cover proof!

  6. Yeah, I guess it's a case of the age old problem of no demand = no supply. I do know that the Manitoba Collection had multiples of all the later issues of all the horror titles in high grade, but very few pre-1972/1973 books in high grade, although the books were in the collection.
  7. I know bronze horror is currently hot, but his insinuation was that all books from '80 to '85 are going to jump in the next few years the way silver did around 1990, and bronze did around 2000. By 1980 comics were being sold thru comic book shops, and people were taking care of their books, so there will simply not be the scarcity of quality material that Silver and (early) Bronze collectors discovered when they started trying to recover the books they bought off the newstand 25 years earlier. The scarcest Bronze horror in grade is the late 60/early 70's books, not the late 70's/early 80's books... (Geez...I'm starting to sound like The Professor and The Madman!! )
  8. Yep, I read it and he comments on the apparent scarcity of '77-'84 horror comics in high grade. Another interesting/related comment was that in general, comics from '80 to '85 are heating up, and how historically when comics hit the 20-25 year level prices go up due to the collectors "...getting older and coming into more funds." Anyone think that's gonna happen with post-1980 books? Doug notes that late-70's books now guide at around $10, but the early 80's books only guide at $2-5 and may have room to grow. I'm skeptical about this myself, but there's definitely a current demand for 25/30/35-cent books (pre-80) at current guide prices...
  9. Which books will be listed first? When will subsequent batches start? I've been in and out of town all summer and that trend will continue until school starts up next month, so contingency plans may be needed to place emergency bids!
  10. Kudos back at ya...and to: Pimpy Thunderkitten Davidking Teen_Titans shiverbones chromium qualitycomix for recent seamless transactions as well!
  11. Yeah, the book appears to be majorly mis-folded. Seems to be a rather common defects on early-mid 60's Marvels. Or maybe it's just me...
  12. No, I'm pretty convinced now that it is definitely a production-related defect. CGC may be more lenient on Golden Age books, but I would be shocked if they didn't consider this a production-related defect when assigning that book a grade of 7.0/7.5 (resub). In fact, it's quite similar to the little corner chipping defect I pictured above for bronze age books, only the pieces are completed detached instead of hanging on by a thread (although I've seen plenty of bronze age books where the pieces are detached). Do you collect Golden Age Timelys? What kinds of books have you "seen many like this" on? Timely/Steve - what say ye on this matter of much import - production related or no??
  13. Could be. Or even a double cut. But I don't know how it could get a double cut. Is it possible it was something post production? Can it be confirmed that this defect was on the original newsstands? I'd bet they were, but you never know. I remember back in the old days of the LP. A local retail store would have discounted LP's that had similar corner cuts to note which ones were on sale. Is it possible that delers/drug stores used to cut the corners of the old books when they were discounted for liquidation? I don't think it's a post-production defect, and from the grade on this Heritage book with the same problem, I'm guessing CGC agrees with me.
  14. All you need to know is that they overgrade. Good thing you didn't win anything. At those prices only the seller really wins. Here's the HoS 81. From the scans I got, not all the books were obviously overgraded, but many were. The scans of some of the NM/M books looked very nice...
  15. Serpi rarely bids on 100 pagers. redf1's crazy bids has forced me to consider non-ebay sources to get my books. Hell,. he's now on vault so I can't even get a deal there anymore. You're still buying!?!? And just who are these non-ebay sources with high grade bronze horror?
  16. Bindery tears are easy. It's just that...a tear, usually on the folded corner, when the book is cut. The spine is harder to cut than the other area of the page, due to the fact that is where the paper is folded. When the blade cuts, the book has a tendancy to pull away from the blade in the spine. Because of this, the paper will often tear at that point. Sometimes the book will pull away enough to cause extra paper to appear at the tips. Other times the blade just isn't set to cut deep enough and will fall just short of cutting all the way through the book in the spine. The book will tear to separate from the sliver that was trimmed away. Here's a close-up. Can anyone comment on how CGC treats this production defect?
  17. They don't show up often enough in high grade for me to know either, and while I didn't look it up in the guide before bidding...I now see I got it at about the Fine price. LB Cole books have cooled off considerably since the mid-to-late 90's, which is good news for me!!
  18. Yep - ebay raw purchase, the back cover has a couple sun shadows but the book is real clean. I also picked up the 19 he had, but let the record show I am still searching for a nice Terrors of the Jungle 17...anyone!?!? The seller is highly recommended, he's mostly a collector that infrequently sells some nice stuff...like alot of GA collectors I suppose!
  19. Bummed I didn't win this, but I tried!! I was heading out out of town and knew I couldn't snipe it, so I placed what I thought was a Whale Bid (it was about double the current bid) but my hopes and dreams were squashed as Serpi's Blue Whale Bid revealed mine to really be a pathetic Jonah Bid. I got a big scan from the seller, and it sure looked nicer than Heritage's 9.4, with white pages to boot! There was one other 9.2 copy sold previously for about the same price. Oh well...maybe after the crash I'll be able to get a 9.4 for what, like $25? On a more encouraging note, the HoS 82 arrived and it's real nice, well-centered with good color and no writing, stamps, etc.,. That one had been on my want list for a long time...but no more!
  20. This is one of my favorites, and to me it sticks out above the rest due to great composition and the greytone cover. The vast majority of copies I've owned of this book have the right edge of the comics code cutoff, and I've seen some where the second "8" in the issue number was also cutoff. The various 20-cent Wrightson HoS, HoM covers are also great...so many choices!
  21. Congrats! The 175 is on my list...any update on when/where these will hit the streets?
  22. Actually I think I have a meager FN/VF raw copy. Since I also have the HOM puppies too, I'll check. Just lazy... What's top of census--9.6? Ok, let us know... Actually, top census is 9.4. I guess greggy hasn't gotten his run slabbed yet?
  23. I believe they are GA reprints...let me crack open the slab and check...
