  1. I've posted this gem several times before...but not here, not on the ultimate bronze horror cover thread...so it must be done!
  2. Paging Rob_react: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33812&item=2250319512&rd=1 "If this sells at this price I'll have a copy down in Florida so fast it'll make your head spin." Rob. Start packaging up your variants. This book sold. Sick. Must be TGC! Anyone have any Hulk 35-cent variants for sale? Condition only mildly important...
  3. Prices weren't whacky, this was just the only book on my want list that I found in high enough grade, I paid $45 for it from Harley and it's probably a 9.2. He had a couple dozen(?) nice bronze DC horror books, including 3 of the HoM Dollar books in high grade (not NM). I wasn't looking at all the books though, just the titles on my list, so he might have had some other stuff as well. Saw a real pretty Super DC Giant 20 at $75(?) at Basement Comix, but it had a hefty bindery tear. Black Cat comics had some nice 100 pagers, a run of Hot Wheels, and a great looking Super DC Giant 21 @$350, and the elusive Blue Bolt 105 with the "Green Chick form Star Trek" cover! Dale Roberts had some nice books too, including a sharp HoM 179 @$125. Chris Foss had a new collection (3 new collections?) that had some nice bronze horror in it...and stacks of gold and silver in his cage!! There was also a shwweeet copy of Mask Comics 2 CGC 8.0...
  4. Hey - you were home yesterday, so Zonker and I didn't "stop by"! Heroes Con acquisition...lots of high-grade horror there, although this was the only one that matched up in condition/price with my want list. Nice deep blue cover, my undergrade is quite noticably lighter.
  5. I'll have to do some investigating on the missing triangles before I answer. It would help if you could post a few pics to keep me from trying to find some. Thanks for the other info above, and here's a pic of this defect. Sounds like it could be an extreme case of the bindery tear phenom you describe, where the cutting process actually rips off a piece of the book:
  6. What about those pesky bindery chips on the spines of golden age Timely's (others?) where there can be a good 1/8" x 1/8" triangle missing from the tips of the spine? On a related note, how about those little bindery tears on the bottom open edge of bronze age books where there's often "extra paper" on the cover and interior pages, but the piece is still attached?
  7. Wow, my HoM 227 is 9.4 all around except for this defect. I don't have many of the later ones, and I've never really noticed it on the earlier 100 pagers? I'll try to put up a scan, but as I recall the cut is so clean/straight and in the white border area so it may not show up.
  8. I agree, the majority of MC occurs along the right edge of the book where there is no overflash, so I don't know how much water this theory holds. There's also the possibility the ink layer was somewhat brittle, or had other properties that caused the "crack" the led to the chip, like putting fingernail polish on a piece of paper and trying to cut it with a scissors...
  9. Do they all have the ubiquitous bindery tears at the tips of the spine? Given the thickness and the taller-than-average height of most of the DC Dollar books, they're tough to find in nice shape...
  10. I tend to agree. I'm not out to get Pedigree books. But since I am trying to compile a high grade DC mystery collection, I think Mike's comment about the pedigree books being the highest in the CGC rings true. Many of the HOM I have (Oakland) and want to get (Pacific Coast) all are #1 in the census. That is the only reason why I would want them--more for the high grade. The fact that they are pedigrees are secondary (in my mind). BTW, I'm seeing a trend where pedigrees don't necessarily command a premium for the book unless it's top rated. Anyone else seeing this? I never really saw any runs of NM copies of these books for sale until the pedigrees mentioned above hit the market, so yeah, if you're collecting super high grade DC horror, you're collecting these pedigrees. I'm not picky though, any old NM copy will do! Check the census numbers on that Unexpected 118...
  11. Unexpected 118 Neal Adams cover, Oakland copy
  12. Pedigree Bronze Horror Time! As far as I know, the best (only?) early 70's pedigrees are the PC, Oakland, and Northland books, and here are a few for your critique: Unexpected 113 Neal Adams cover, Oakland copy
  13. That's on the very high side...check Metro's website and ask for scans, look around, take your time!
  14. A round of Kudos (for some it's "yet another" round ) goes out to the following forum members for recent transactions: greggy 'dogg Donut wormboy shiverbones nearmint ImageMask tkg2627 OldGuy Zonker Nikos (and make sure you use that one book in Grading Round 10 ) chrom dlee111 bonds Apotheosis shadroch And I'm not sure if he posts here, but I ordered some...you guessed it....Hulks...from Doug Sulipa that came in real quick, and real nice!
  15. He's thinking "...it's a monstrosity...", she's thinking "If true, this could fulfill my wildest fantasies..." as she lifts the covers to find out...
  16. Glad you liked it...and as I don't recall whether I commented on it last time, I previously picked up some high-grade raw Hulks from Aces that were accurately graded, so if you're interested in any of his books I say this to his grading - .
  17. Back atcha!! Chris helped me plug a hole in my HoS run w/a great looking copy that CGC calls a 9.0, but I call shweet!
