  1. Thanks for the other info above, and here's a pic of this defect. Sounds like it could be an extreme case of the bindery tear phenom you describe, where the cutting process actually rips off a piece of the book:

    509707-cap41_spine.jpg

Could be. Or even a double cut.

But I don't know how it could get a double cut.

Is it possible it was something post production?

Can it be confirmed that this defect was on the original newsstands?

I'd bet they were, but you never know.

I remember back in the old days of the LP.

A local retail store would have discounted LP's that had similar corner cuts to note which ones were on sale.

Is it possible that delers/drug stores used to cut the corners of the old books when they were discounted for liquidation?

    confused-smiley-013.gif

I don't think it's a post-production defect, and from the grade on this Heritage book with the same problem, I'm guessing CGC agrees with me.

  2. Seriously. Crazy prices IMHO. What's up with the prices the strongside_collectibles books went for Sunday? Is he/she a dealer I should know about?

All you need to know is that they overgrade. Good thing you didn't win anything. At those prices only the seller really wins. thumbsup2.gif

Here's the HoS 81. From the scans I got, not all the books were obviously overgraded, but many were. The scans of some of the NM/M books looked very nice... 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

  3. Just think of the bidding list on these 100 pagers.

    Possible people:

    red1fshing 893censored-thumb.gif

    serpi mad.gif

    greggy smirk.gif

Those three alone will give you big dollars.

Serpi rarely bids on 100 pagers. thumbsup2.gif

redf1's crazy bids has forced me to consider non-ebay sources to get my books. Hell,. he's now on vault so I can't even get a deal there anymore. 893censored-thumb.gif

    You're still buying!?!? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

And just who are these non-ebay sources with high grade bronze horror? confused-smiley-013.gif

  4. How about those little bindery tears on the bottom open edge of bronze age books where there's often "extra paper" on the cover and interior pages, but the piece is still attached? confused-smiley-013.gif

    Bindery tears are easy.

It's just that...a tear, usually on the folded corner, when the book is cut.

The spine is harder to cut than the other area of the page, due to the fact that is where the paper is folded.

When the blade cuts, the book has a tendancy to pull away from the blade in the spine. Because of this, the paper will often tear at that point. Sometimes the book will pull away enough to cause extra paper to appear at the tips. Other times the blade just isn't set to cut deep enough and will fall just short of cutting all the way through the book in the spine. The book will tear to separate from the sliver that was trimmed away.

Here's a close-up. Can anyone comment on how CGC treats this production defect? confused-smiley-013.gif

  5. I don't know what Terrors of the Jungle usually sell for, but it looks like you got a great deal for a VF.

They don't show up often enough in high grade for me to know either, and while I didn't look it up in the guide before bidding...I now see I got it at about the Fine price. LB Cole books have cooled off considerably since the mid-to-late 90's, which is good news for me!! cloud9.gif

  6. Nice! Good looking copy, was it an Ebay purchase?

Yep - ebay raw purchase, the back cover has a couple sun shadows but the book is real clean. I also picked up the 19 he had, but let the record show I am still searching for a nice Terrors of the Jungle 17...anyone!?!? 893crossfingers-thumb.gif

The seller is highly recommended, he's mostly a collector that infrequently sells some nice stuff...like alot of GA collectors I suppose! confused-smiley-013.gif

  7. By the way...

Did anyone see what "drbanner" did to the poor slob on that HOS #81?

I nearly fell out of my chair.

    893applaud-thumb.gif

Bummed I didn't win this, but I tried!! I was heading out out of town and knew I couldn't snipe it, so I placed what I thought was a Whale Bid (it was about double the current bid) but my hopes and dreams were squashed as Serpi's Blue Whale Bid revealed mine to really be a pathetic Jonah Bid. flamed.gif

I got a big scan from the seller, and it sure looked nicer than Heritage's 9.4, with white pages to boot! There was one other 9.2 copy sold previously for about the same price. Oh well...maybe after the crash I'll be able to get a 9.4 for what, like $25? 27_laughing.gif

On a more encouraging note, the HoS 82 arrived and it's real nice, well-centered with good color and no writing, stamps, etc.,. That one had been on my want list for a long time...but no more! thumbsup2.gif

  8. Just looking back over this thread and wondering... with all of the great books that have been listed, what is your favorite bronze horror cover??? There are so many to choose from. How about HOM 174 or 190, 195 or 205, 208, 213, 217 or 236? And what about HOS? Maybe # 88, 92 or 103? How about Witching Hour 1 or 10 or 33? Even Phantom Stranger 10 or 18 or 26? SOHH #5, the great Wrightson Jack 'o Lantern cover? Or Unexpected, or Dark Manson or.....I could go on and on. But is there just ONE that sticks out above the rest for you? What is it and why?

This is one of my favorites, and to me it sticks out above the rest due to great composition and the greytone cover. The vast majority of copies I've owned of this book have the right edge of the comics code cutoff, and I've seen some where the second "8" in the issue number was also cutoff. The various 20-cent Wrightson HoS, HoM covers are also great...so many choices!

  9. OK, got my grades online today. I pretty much nailed them. Was really hoping for a 9.8 on 211, but a 9.6 isn't too shabby...

    HOM 175 CGC 9.0 OWW

    HOM 176 CGC 9.2 OW

    HOM 208 CGC 9.6 OWW

    HOM 211 CGC 9.6 OW

    thumbsup2.gif

Congrats! The 175 is on my list...any update on when/where these will hit the streets? 893crossfingers-thumb.gif

  10. I believe they are GA reprints...let me crack open the slab and check... makepoint.gif

tongue.gif Actually I think I have a meager FN/VF raw copy. Since I also have the HOM puppies too, I'll check. Just lazy...

    What's top of census--9.6?

    Ok, let us know... sumo.gif

Actually, top census is 9.4. I guess greggy hasn't gotten his run slabbed yet? confused-smiley-013.gif

  11. No mention of bid stalking other members of the Price Variant Club? That's got to be required behavior.

"If this sells at this price I'll have a copy down in Florida so fast it'll make your head spin."

Rob. Start packaging up your variants. This book sold.

    Sick.

    Must be TGC! 27_laughing.gif

Anyone have any Hulk 35-cent variants for sale? Condition only mildly important...

  12. yowtch!!!! thats a nice WH9! So the bronze horror was whacky priced?

Prices weren't whacky, this was just the only book on my want list that I found in high enough grade, I paid $45 for it from Harley and it's probably a 9.2. He had a couple dozen(?) nice bronze DC horror books, including 3 of the HoM Dollar books in high grade (not NM). I wasn't looking at all the books though, just the titles on my list, so he might have had some other stuff as well.

Saw a real pretty Super DC Giant 20 at $75(?) at Basement Comix, but it had a hefty bindery tear. Black Cat comics had some nice 100 pagers, a run of Hot Wheels, and a great looking Super DC Giant 21 @$350, and the elusive Blue Bolt 105 with the "Green Chick form Star Trek" cover! Dale Roberts had some nice books too, including a sharp HoM 179 @$125. Chris Foss had a new collection (3 new collections?) that had some nice bronze horror in it...and stacks of gold and silver in his cage!!

There was also a shwweeet copy of Mask Comics 2 CGC 8.0... cloud9.gif

  13. Hey - you were home yesterday, so Zonker and I didn't "stop by"! 27_laughing.gif

Heroes Con acquisition...lots of high-grade horror there, although this was the only one that matched up in condition/price with my want list. Nice deep blue cover, my undergrade is quite noticably lighter.

  14. What about those pesky bindery chips on the spines of golden age Timely's (others?) where there can be a good 1/8" x 1/8" triangle missing from the tips of the spine? confused-smiley-013.gif

I'll have to do some investigating on the missing triangles before I answer.

It would help if you could post a few pics to keep me from trying to find some.

  15. What about those pesky bindery chips on the spines of golden age Timely's (others?) where there can be a good 1/8" x 1/8" triangle missing from the tips of the spine? confused-smiley-013.gif

On a related note, how about those little bindery tears on the bottom open edge of bronze age books where there's often "extra paper" on the cover and interior pages, but the piece is still attached? confused-smiley-013.gif

  16. Yup...exactly. I know that it must be from the production because I've seen it on the BC of many 100 pagers and never the front. Plus, it's always straight so it must be from a blade. 893frustrated.gif

Wow, my HoM 227 is 9.4 all around except for this defect. I don't have many of the later ones, and I've never really noticed it on the earlier 100 pagers?

I'll try to put up a scan, but as I recall the cut is so clean/straight and in the white border area so it may not show up. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

  17. There is also the theory that chipping occurs from tiny tears that form from the bent overflash that Marvels had back in the day. As the tears get bigger, pieces come off. This likely happens on some books with overflash, but I have seen so many books that don't have overflash that still have chipping, that this can't explain how the chips happened on every book.

I agree, the majority of MC occurs along the right edge of the book where there is no overflash, so I don't know how much water this theory holds. There's also the possibility the ink layer was somewhat brittle, or had other properties that caused the "crack" the led to the chip, like putting fingernail polish on a piece of paper and trying to cut it with a scissors... 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

  18. I've got a TON of "NM" House of Mystery Dollar Comics from eBay. Care to guess what they really are? 893frustrated.gif

Do they all have the ubiquitous bindery tears at the tips of the spine? Given the thickness and the taller-than-average height of most of the DC Dollar books, they're tough to find in nice shape...

  19. No really, I'm not putting down pedigreed books. But to me they are just regular books. I guess I just don't "count" the pedigree as meaning anything.

I tend to agree. I'm not out to get Pedigree books. But since I am trying to compile a high grade DC mystery collection, I think Mike's comment about the pedigree books being the highest in the CGC rings true. Many of the HOM I have (Oakland) and want to get (Pacific Coast) all are #1 in the census. That is the only reason why I would want them--more for the high grade. The fact that they are pedigrees are secondary (in my mind).

BTW, I'm seeing a trend where pedigrees don't necessarily command a premium for the book unless it's top rated. Anyone else seeing this?

I never really saw any runs of NM copies of these books for sale until the pedigrees mentioned above hit the market, so yeah, if you're collecting super high grade DC horror, you're collecting these pedigrees. I'm not picky though, any old NM copy will do! 27_laughing.gif

Check the census numbers on that Unexpected 118... gossip.gif
