  1. Is there a general complaints forum? In general right now, they're discussing National Parks. I'd hate to interrupt! I don't see another forum here even close to this, as CS may find himself on the famous list and this is the best place for everyone to chime in. IMHO. GENERAL DISCUSSION - about 4 threads down Merci beaucoup.
  2. PMS, May I refer you to post #1 in this thread? That should clear up your confusion. cheers, -d

  4. Can someone save me the trouble and just confirm that the last 150 posts relate to the "mystery box" deals? Take this discussion to General, as it doesn't belong in this thread.
  5. Different expectations, I guess...the original posters description of what he expected seemed a bit beyond what was offered, IMHO... Agreed. Consequently, there are always problems with this type of offering - Caveat Emptor! (but certainly not a probation list offense.)

  7. Good bump Jazzy - now just lose the sig when you do it . . . Thanks, d
  8. Because MCP does not have the alkaline reserve a full back does its shelf life is obviously shorter. Also I think it depends on what book it is, a White paged BA book, or a cream/tan GA book. I think that would make a huge difference in how often the paper should be swapped out. Perhaps the 7 year number was a compromise and swapping out the paper every 7 years is overkill on many books, but pushing the limit on others. Or perhaps they just drew numbers from a hat and went with it. I do think because the MCP sitting right next to the interior is as effective as a fullback, just not for as long. And I do not know either in regards to long term archival safety but I honestly don't think a slabbed book is any worse off then a comic sitting in a stack of books without bags/boards that survived for decades with white pages because their exposure to the environment was so limited. I guess time will tell. I think Microchamber paper is more effective than a Full Back because the clay-impregnated cover stock is not blocking the migration of acids to be absorbed by the Microchamber paper the way it does for a Full Back. Microchamber does have an alkaline reserve, and in addition to that, it is impregnated with the SPZ zeolite that allows it to absorb pre-acidic by-products of deterioration and atmospheric pollutants that would pass through an alkaline Full Back. As for whether it lasts as long as a Full Back, that's kind of a comparison of apples to oranges. For absorbing acids, it may or may not last as long as a Full Back, but we've never gotten any evidence about how long a Full Back will retain its alkaline pH within a Mylar with an acidic comic book. I'm guessing it's a heck of a lot longer than 10 years. Because a Full Back is essentially the same as alkaline paper (except much thicker and with a much greater quantity of calcium carbonate than a sheet of alkaline paper has), it is probably at least on par with alkaline paper, which has a life expectancy of 500-1,000 years depending on the grade of the paper. That would obviously have to be reduced to compensate for the fact that the Full Back isn't being kept in a museum environment, but rather, is being used as an alkaline reserve within an enclosure that contains an acidic artifact. I have little doubt that it will remain effective for at least 50 years even with severely degraded paper, given how much calcium carbonate is in a 42 mil Full Back (approximately ten times as much as is in a 4 mil thick piece of archival paper). But for absorbing gasses like nitrogen dioxide that react with the paper and turn into acids, Full Backs provide no protection (until the acids have actually formed) while Microchamber paper provides years of protection. Microchamber paper is supposed to absorb 170 times as much acid as standard alkaline paper, so I suspect that the 7 year figure is way on the low side in terms of how long it will last. As the tests here showed, the Microchamber paper could absorb the amount of nitrogen dioxide that is present at the highest concentrations in New York City for over 8,000 years before it was fully saturated. That's a lot of atmospheric pollutant that will never reach the book and will never turn into acid. These "tests" are from a vendor site . . .

  10. This is true, but they should at least restrict known swindlers from posting in the For Sale forum. Agreed - this would be in everyone's best interest. Particularly in this situation where you are dealing with a minor.
  11. I am disputing it in the sense that I don't know the answer. But you have to understand my point of reference: I am a Golden Age collector. I know minimal about any funny book printed past 1945. They are my sole focus and main concern in all these discussions. When I am looking at all this information, it is from that perspective. And I think that makes a big difference in how you look at this whole topic. I do have genuine concern about books from the 1940's being pressed. Not only do you have different and inconsistent manufacturing processes back then, but you also add anywhere from 60-70+ years of storage techniques into the equation. You want to talk about wild cards? And just because the results on pressing one book, with regards to maintaining preservation, were negligible that does not mean you will get similar results on the next book. Every book is so different and had such a different journey to get to today. I get frustrated because I don't think people consider this enough. They extrapolate one book's results to all books. They press a book from 1968 successfully and think it will be similar for a book from 1942. And the scary part for me is that even with all these unknowns out there, it is not slowing down the amounts of Golden Age books being "processed". Another great post
  12. Nothing truer than this. I read a BA book sitting on my lounge chair on the deck in the sun the other day - no more than 10-15 minutes exposure. Just that was enough to warp the pages - not permanently, mind you, but alarmingly so.
  13. Or at the very least, make it like a prison sentence, and give him X years on the list. After his behavior and repeated problems/time on the list, removing him now would be a real joke. I disagree. Membership in the Hall of Shame should be permanent. There should never be former members of the Hall of Shame. That's the wrong message to send, especially when it is such an offense that it has only been given 4 or 5 times. He/She whosoever are granted Hall of Shame status will be required to carry their scarlet HoS. I agree. Perhaps we should just ask for a body part . . .
  14. Or at the very least, make it like a prison sentence, and give him X years on the list. After his behavior and repeated problems/time on the list, removing him now would be a real joke. I think that's a good idea, perhaps Arch could be persuaded to give Connor a Custom title, stating that he is on probation from buying and selling for x amount of time (like till he's 18). I don't believe at burning people at the stake, but I do believe in teenagers learning about consequences and not getting a free pass. Always the voice of reason . . . we need more like you Sharon
  15. The process and chemistry of making newsprint versus freesheet is so different. Depending on when that test was done, the brightness on that Springhill Offset was either 83 bt., 86 bt., or what it is today, 90 bt. Offset standards have changed through the years. In comparison, newsprint today is 59-60 bt. And back as recent as the 1970's, it was 56 bt. That is a huge difference in brightness and the amount and types of chemicals used in the process to "whiten" the sheet are very different. I understand the acidity, but there are lots of differences in composition besides that and I can't imagine them not having an impact. Can you get a ratio? I don't know, perhaps. But in order to get one, you have to test the newsprint and the coated groundwood. And if you do that, you have a much better answer regardless of the freesheet test. Are there any tests out there on newsprint and/or coated groundwood? How about those two grades from samples manufactured in the 1940's or 50's? The grade standards were a little different then, so it could make a difference within similar grades. Either one of those I would love to see. But even those wouldn't be a "be all end all" because of all the variables involved. But I'd rather slice and disect that one. Good stuff Johnny - keep it up
  16. I think 3 sheets is maximum at CF and covers - that in itself adds enough weight and thickness to the book that handling may cause some structural concerns. The CF and inside covers also have the inherent "space" to accept them.
  17. Thanks to all who posted information here: Fantastic four, bronzerules, FFB, buttock, and Ze-man - You guys are great! The OP is one of the best written questions I've read posted here on the boards As FFB states as to storage: "The moral of the story is, use common sense and good storage techniques and don't panic." Unfortunately, I personally don't think applying heat and pressure to a comic book falls within that tenant (regardless of what you may read and interpret as emancipating the act).

  20. nothin' at all - heck, I'm only 12 . . . I have seen your photo and I must say that was a mighty rough looking twelve. et tu, Brute . . .
