  1. I picked up 2 from the HA auction.

I don't collect post war, so I don't know why I got MMC #84... I think I thought it was a good deal.

    Congrats on both :applause:

I think the MMC #84 is a fun cover. I've always liked it. And you get Cap on the cover which is a real bonus for a Torch dominated series

Thanks! I never thought I'd be able to get a MMC #2.

I'm not a huge Angel fan, but the cover is really well done.

Is mmc 84 the only MMC cap cover?

  2. I've always loved the MMC#7 cover as well, (and wow that's an amazing copy! Thx for sharing) but I always wondered about the helmet the girl is wearing. It has a very Sci Fi theme to it. Is the helmet in the interior? If so do they explain?

Several early Timelys have elements of SciFi, I'm thinking it was just part of figuring out the look of Timely. As the publisher came into its own, the sci fi elements disappeared along with the experimental multi character titles such as Daring, early mystic, and Red Raven.

  3. As always I love this thread and the books shown.

I have another question for you guys.

Besides G-8, I don't see too many war and pre-war era (pre 1946) pulps with Nazi's/Axis on the cover.

I have the Dynamic Science Stories one, but would like to see others.

Are there any examples you could name or show?

If there just weren't many produced, why was that?

I was under the impression that pulps kept going strong during the rise of comics in and throughout the war years, but maybe I'm mistaken.

  4. Thanks guys! It was a lot of fun setting that up. I'm glad you liked it.

I wish I could have mixed in my cgc'd books as well for an even better shot.

Before I bagged em up I took a pic of the stack. I posted it once before, but here it is again.

  5. Nice All Winners #9s!

I just got one at the Seattle Con this weekend.

Since they were there, I dropped it off at CGC.

I'll be lucky if it gets a 1.0 haha.

Rarely do I get a chance to buy (or even see) certain Timely books at a con, but I got lucky this year and was able to catch an All Select #2.

I always loved that cover, and it's been a tough to find book for me. (Thanks grahamcrackers!)

As usual I was disappointed with the quantity of Timelys at the con, but it was fun spending some time with other Golden Age fans.

I don't get why the GA dealers weren't closer together this year.

I was surprised at the lack of Caps this year. I'm guessing they're all in upcoming auctions... I think I counted 6-7 Cap #1s coming up in Apr-May.

It was a fun 12 hours at the con. Like last year, Grahamcrackers had the best Timely selection, Terry's booth was hands down the most fun to flip through, and Harley had a usual mix of neat stuff.

Besides a guy with a couple high grade Timelys under glass at his table, I didn't see much else.

Here are a couple shots of Grahamcracker's booth who easily had the best location.

    (j/k it was terrible...)

Jamie scared a bunch of bystanders with the loud pop and shattering sounds from demoing the proper way of freeing a slabbed comic!

    That poor case...

Unlike most, I feel weird taking pics of those in costume, but I loved how this shy little boy's mom was dressed as the Winter Soldier. Very cool.

    See you next year!

  6. Some of you might find this interesting. This is the "From Pulps to Comics" panel at Pensacon last week in podcast form at ThePulp.net.

It features me, with David Earle (professor from UWF and pulp expert) and Nicky Wheeler Nicholson (granddaughter of Malcom Wheeler Nicholson, the pulp writer who founded DC comics)

    http://www.thepulp.net/pulp-info/convention-coverage/pensacon-2014/

Thanks for the link! It was educational, and made me want to hear more about pulps.

I also listened to"Pulpcon 36: The Future of Pulp Collecting".

I found many of their concerns similar to the Golden Age community and collecting, but don't think they view the GA collector any differently than the modern comic collector.

Id love to learn more about pulps but find it somewhat overwhelming.

Is there a pulp cover book similar to the GA photo journals? These books helped me grasp the immense depth of GA.

Are any pulps listed in the overstreet?

I wish there was more of a pulp presence at the cons I attend. I'm glad I at least have this thread.

  7. I hit some big issues in the past couple months.

It took awhile for these to show up in the condition I needed. So I'm glad I can finally cross these tough books off the list.

It's tough not to overspend with Comic Connect's auction set up.

This made for a good fight Re: the Human Torch #12 and Marvel Mystery #5.

I say "well played" if you were an underbidder, I was very close to throwing in the towel.

The cap 27 looks like some color touch even though the seller claimed no restoration. But I'm ok with it. That book's been a pain in my rear. It was paired with USA #13 which doesn't seem to show up often.

The Marvel Mystery #5 is very rough, but I couldn't pass up a chance for the first Schomburg Torch cover.

As usual, if you have history or any info on these copies please reply!
