Have to say I disagree strongly with both of these assessments.

Not sure where you're getting your Byrne comps from but the last Byrne X-Men page was better imo and sold for the exact same price (81k). And before that, the one in 2023, was much better (with prof x and the whole team), and it sold for 90. Where are you comping that this was a 30k discount?

And same for the 252 page. There was one crazy day where 2 black spidey pages sold super high. Outside of that day, if I told you that a 252 page was going to sell for 174k, that would be a HUGE number. Where do you see anywhere except for that one crazy sale of 2 pages that this isn't a GREAT number?

Sounds like you have a narrative ready to go and you're bending the facts to fit it.

The X-Men page sold for close to expected. The ASM page was a WOW sale.

While it's not 1 and 0 type stuff, I am in agreement with you

81K for a 120-121 panel is a record, most certainly did not go for a 30K discount as was mentioned in the post to which you responded.   Now a decent Dark Phoenix issue page well that's a  whole other story!

Excellent points on the 252 , some seems to have forgotten the circumstances that existed.  It could be a decade before those prices on those hit near those levels again.

  2. Perhaps I'm just getting old, but I now lack the patience I had in the past for dealing with ComicLink's Website,

IIRC this was first Original Art I won from them, all the way back in 2006.  Still have it!

Although I no longer have the patience dealing with their website, it is somewhat comforting that the site has not changed since at least 2006 :)

Grading by its' very nature is subjective. If we follow through with your argument then there is no real basis for the point system at all. Either the grading means something (including page quality) or it doesn't. Obviously it does or we would not be here or worried about points at all!

Furthermore, a change in points for page quality would probably be an easy change in the coding

No as well. 100% against this idea.

Its something that will reward incomplete collections over some complete sets simply because of 1 aspect of grading in which opinions are widely divided.

@jstam There are enough unfair inequities with the CGC registry please don't create another!

It's always nice to see people who are interested in collecting these cartoon comics rather than cliche superhero comics. I'm guessing those two costed you hundreds to thousands of dollars?

I've had a slight interested in collecting Road Runner, but I kind of put that intention aside as I did not want to overextend my budget and become impulsive xD

    Thanks.

They ran approx $72 each.  In June 2005, I picked up a lot of 6 Road Runner Covers for $431 (including Buyer's Premium).  I still have 4 of the 6.  Traded 2, 12-14 years ago.

These have low interest in the Original Comic Aart community.  I may very well be wrong, but 1970s and 1980s Looney Tune Character covers even today I feel would go for around $500 Maximum if at auction.

@OtherEric I'm on a roll. Might as well just go through the entire rare Whitman list and see what's being sold for cheap.

Still not as rare as my 91 , although I do wonder if Comic is CGC 9.2 or higher which would command more at auction. I've a suspicion it might not be the art???

  6. A Whitman Pre-Pack distributed only Beep, Beep The  Road-Runner #92.  A case of the comic perhaps being more "valuable" than the cover art?

Not yet in my CAF gallery, I've only had it 20 years... Like many collectors in the 2003-2006 time-frame I purchased a bunch of Gold Key/Whitman cover lots at Heritage

1970's Sal B Hulk has exploded. It's now approaching John B 1970's Thor level respect. Of course Hulk pages generally are in much higher demand than Thor from the era.

Sal 1970's Hulk pages have been drying up for over a decade, uncommon for while to see anything decent.  Looks like someone got 3 nice above average 1977-1978 Hulk pages. I do shudder to think now what a Sale Hulk Battle page vs any name brand villain would now command....

Sal was the Hulk artist for 2-3 generation of readers. Leaving when Byrne took over in 1985.  There are only 2 Hulk (1 annual) covers, both from the 1980's. This means Sal Hulk collectors fight for the splashes and the decent panels with more vigor than some might expect.  This is what I've witnessed in my own quarter century of Sal Hulk art collecting.

anyone recall the "Hulk Art Collective" ?

    A few interesting results

John Buscema Thor splash, over $10k, lots of love.

Sal Buscema Hulk panels, $3k+. Remember when these were ~1k or so.  I thought they would get a Sal bump but guess word hasn't reached everyone.

I recall when they were just barely over 100 at Heritage.  I paid 110 + vig for this one back in 2002 :)   IMHO it's a superior page to the 3 sold today

Original Comic Art:Panel Pages, Sal Buscema - Original Art for Incredible Hulk #232, page 27 (Marvel, 1978). Sal Buscema did some of his best work on this t...

Several Mortimer Spidey Super Stories panel pages have sold in excess of $2K, and I also recall a few of his splashes selling for over $4K.  If anything, this splash may have underperformed, given it’s content

100% correct.  I follow the Spidey Super Story stuff as I've quite a bit.  Based on the prices they have somewhat stabilized for the moment. This has occurred many times in the past right before they jump to the next level.   Do miss the good ol' days when I was able to pick up a Spidey Splash with Thanos for $50 :)

I’m sort of in that category, but it’s more of a feeling that if I buy a cover for $20,000 today, I might not live long enough to sell at break-even or see a profit years from now. I don’t primarily buy for resale purposes, but I don’t make/have a lot of extra cash like many collectors on this thread have and I make sure event penny counts - and that, if I need to sell, I could at least make my money back fairly quickly. I always have my eye on the resale, even if I plan to never sell. It comes from growing up poor and with Depression-era parents who raked and scraped and saved and taught me to keep my comics and Star Wars action figures in good condition in case I need to sell them one day.

I have steered clear of a lot of great art auctions because the prices have just gone so high that I don’t have the confidence I once had that I could get my cash back if and when I need to sell. There are lots of pieces I’d love to own, but I have to rethink sometimes and say to myself “Do I want it and enough that if I’m in a pinch and need to sell, I could recoup 100% of what I spent?”

That keeps me out of a lot of auctions these days.

I'm in Total agreement especially with the paragraph in bold.   I can get still get 5%+ compounded and guaranteed for 5 years with 20k and I'm not so sure if paying current FMV on many art pieces will yield as well. most of the last 12 years i woudl never had even considered going that route now it's most appealing.

For around 18 years now I've followed an amalgam of advice I received from Will G and Jon M; If it's piece that has special meaning for you, spend what you think it will cost in 5 years so it doesn't get away.

The combined advice has mostly served me well, however as of this point in time paying where i think it will be in 5 years means not overpaying/paying less and if it gets away then it gets away.  I've been blessed to acquire my Grail of Grail's so it's an easier statement to make than it might have been many years back.
