  1. Glad it wasn't too bad. That's another thing you can add to a smartthings monitor: https://support.smartthings.com/hc/en-us/articles/201581984-First-Alert-Smoke-Detector-and-Carbon-Monoxide-Alarm-ZCOMBO-
  2. You can upvote a question at the top of the thread, and an answer to the left of the answer. (see screen shots) And by post a link to the authoritative Q&A, I just mean copy the URL from the address bar at the top and paste a link to the where the question was already answered. I mention that it's work, because then you'd have to go dig up where it was previously answered to get the address, and then come back and post it... which is sometimes more work than I want to do.
  3. I agree, although I think the way to handle that is: Answer thoroughly somewhere - preferably on a question with a VERY CLEAR title the represents the question (I know, this thread doesn't have that) Upvote that question so that it appears in the popular questions area, hopefully causing some to read the answer before asking When a redundant question appears, post a link to the authoritative Q&A post, OR if that's too much work, just reply and said "Try searching for the answer to this - it's been asked and answered previously" - then they can do the work to find the answer.
  4. Not really. I think she's asking for some basic information about how to establish a grade and then get a price guide value. This is a great opportunity to write an overall guide to establishing the value of any given comic book. There IS a process. It might look something like: Look up the price guide value for the book Where to look if it's been graded by a third party grading company Where to look if it's raw (it's probably raw or they wouldn't be asking this question) Explaining what the grading range looks like (numerical from third party graders, or descriptive (VF, etc.) Watching out for cover variants Identifying reprints Decide whether the general RANGE of prices is worth going any farther If it's a really common modern book without any worthwhile top end value, maybe you will not care to find out what condition YOUR book is in, because the value is so low it isn't worth the bother. General discussion on values by age The value of key comics / first appearances If the value of the book has the potential to be worth it, start evaluating the condition / grade of the book General grading guidance - what a low/mid/high grade book looks like Page quality Cover Completeness Creases / color breaks etc. Resources like the Please Grade My forum Information about how a dealer will evaluate the book when buying from you Paying someone local to evaluate the whole collection What third party grading is and how to submit (and deciding if it's worth it based on book value) Watching out for restoration Determining if the book has any potential for conservation Pressing the book for improvement Possible grade improvement Education on the controversies surrounding conservation and disclosure Education on the value (or lack thereof) of things like signatures (placement, signer, provenance) Places you can sell and the work / convenience trade off Dealers for less than market eBay / other for market - if you get lucky, or set a reserve, and do all of the work Fees involved Selling a collection versus selling piecemeal When is a collection worth more because it's together Possible value of selling a competitive registry set of comics What books realize more when sold separately Selling a whole collection so you don't have to bother with the low value books (i.e. someone who is willing to handle the low value books buys it all to get the high value books) Properly handling of the books while evaluating / selling Preserving the condition (watch those corners!) Bags and boards CRITICAL nature of proper packing if shipping anything Well, that's just off the top of my head. The point is, when someone asks a very GENERAL question, it isn't because there's no answer to be had. It's because they don't yet understand where to start. And there's a TON of info that can be provided. @Bomber-Bob
  5. Sorry to the hear that. For the future, and for others, this is a pretty good product: (You need the hub, and internet connection, and the water sensor --- but you can also hook up a bunch of other sensors and controls). https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-SmartThings-Water-Leak-Sensor/dp/B00MOIYIN6
  6. Hi all, I added a new board for newbie questions to our community. I was finding a lot of general "getting started" kinds of questions about collecting showing up in the area we created for questions about the new boards, and it seemed like a good opportunity to let the community create a kind of Frequently Asked Questions area. The kind of board I created has some special features to help people find the best answers to questions and the most helpful questions. Special Q&A features: Members can upvote questions they think are great questions and most helpful to other members. Members can upvote the best answers in a question and push that answer to the top The ORIGINAL POSTER who asked the question can make a single answer as "The best answer" A block at the top shows questions without answers, and popular questions This is a great place to welcome new members, and help people join the hobby, so I hope you all take the time to grow the community and offer a friendly and helpful welcome. Also... who can get the most top answers? Hm... https://www.cgccomics.com/boards/forum/93-newbie-comic-collecting-questions/
  7. WEEELLLLLLLL, here's probably the real deal: Technically you should close a thread if it's closed to avoid disappointments and stay clear of the "only here" rule You can do that any number of ways Hit "mark as sold" which also puts "closed" in the title, kind of implying that it could be either sold or just closed Edit your thread title to add your own "closed" note Respond to the post with a "closed" reply (but that does bump it) You could also, I suppose, list a "Sale valid until XXXX date" in the original post, which would put people on notice not to expect to be able to buy it (or to only find it on the boards) past X time - then you wouldn't have to follow up and explicitly close it Really, though, if the thread just aged out and it's on page 300 and someone says "I'll take it" on a year old post, you won't really ever get "points" added to your account for that. You may get a NOTICE, which lets you know that technically someone wasn't right, BUT it isn't a big deal. And that's what happened to you. You got a friendly reminder / notice that results in no points added to your account and no ramifications to your access to the boards. You kind of do want to close threads, though. Not just to be a stickler for rules, but just to hold down confusion. Moderation only took action on something like that because someone complained. That means a potential buyer wasn't happy about something, and it's better for you to clear up those situations - EVEN if the complaint is not wholly reasonable - EVEN if it really just resulted in a friendly notice / reminder from moderation with no impact on your account.... it's probably still better to just prevent the misunderstanding through some pretty easy actions. But either way, I wouldn't be in any kind of fear that moderation is going to jump on your for having old threads out there and choosing to list on ebay after a REASONABLY LONG period of time. It would only get to the level of points on your account if you did it repeatedly, and it was debatable that time period was too short (resulting an active sale both on and off the boards).
  8. Disabled this as I've heard some complaints, but no raving fans. We'll see if disabling it brings out those who have quietly appreciated it or if it just wasn't helpful.
  9. @pickycollector that's exactly the thing to do. There is now a button in the upper right corner at the top of a thread that lets you mark it as sold. This should lock the thread, put a red badge on it, and add some text to the title -- none of that should bump the thread.
  10. Class of '02 yearbook! https://www.cgccomics.com/boards/search/?&type=core_members&start_after=1009843200&start_before=1041292800&group[4]=1&group[7]=1&group[24]=1&group[12]=1&group[15]=1&group[13]=1&group[28]=1&group[11]=1&group[18]=1&group[9]=1&group[10]=1&group[30]=1&group[22]=1&group[29]=1&group[6]=1&group[23]=1&sortby=member_posts&sortdirection=desc (Hmmmm.... looks like changing pages messes up the search if you just follow the link instead of doing your own search. )
  11. A change to the permissions and groups temporarily may have disabled this for some folks. It should be available again to all users.
  12. Still a chance. I've upped the number of lines that are displayed before abbreviation a couple of times due to feedback. Looking for the sweet spot to see if there's a "right" setting, or if we should just remove it. Just letting it marinate.
  13. Sounds like this part of the FAQ: Some people get too excessive, get reported for doing it overly much, and get a warning.
  14. No... but also yes... I know, confusing. Let me explain. No, there is too much. Let me sum up. We can no longer remove "this post and all of its replies". What we can do is multi-select each individual post we want to remove and remove all of them that were individually selected. THAT means it's easier to pull out one or two offending posts, and leave the rest in place even if they were in a chain of replies to the offending post. BUT, it ALSO means that it's MORE time consuming to remove a bunch of posts that violate guidelines, because you have to select them one at a time. That could result in needed to pull a whole thread because it's too far gone, and too time consuming to clean up. Or it could result in having to just select a pages of posts and clip them because they keep quoting the bad stuff. However, in most cases, I think it will result in more targeted clean ups and less removal of posts that are "fine".
  15. Sure it is. In fact, it's been in a FAQ since 2014, and was true long before that...
  16. Then bother @jonjesper more thoroughly by using a mention.
  17. I see this when I look for it, but it's not noticeable to me. I think it's depends on your connection speed / computer speed. If everything is fast, it happens so fast you don't see it. If the load is slow for some reason, it probably becomes visible.
  18. I prefer to make a custom stream, and select Content Items Only and "Takes me to first unread". This way it's alot more like the thread list in a forum - it just blends several forums together. The default All Activity view gives you a line for every reply. The Content Items Only choice in a custom stream gives you one line for every thread.
  19. Yes, but not the first post, as that content wouldn't be a quote. Do you find value in seeing those pictures again multiple times as people quote them?
  20. I scrolled through a couple of sales threads where the giant quote + a one-liner got much shorter / smoother and saved a bunch of scrolling. I -think- that was a good thing, but I'm also not a buyer/seller, so my perspective is not that informed.
  21. We have one negative reaction once we turned it on. Is anyone expressly liking it? Does it serve a useful purpose for some?
  22. Well, we ended up with 16 for it, and 7 against (given that one of the "against" posted later wanting to change their vote), with the most votes for 5 lines among the "for its". If I count the "against it" folks as wanting more lines, because that means it would be even more rare that they would ever see the "more" link, then the magic number might be 10. We'll give that a run. We'll try it for a while, and see how it feels. Feel free to offer clear, polite feedback. Remember, no matter how much you like / hate it, this is a consensus thing, not an individual thing. Thanks!
  23. Glitch. Maybe specific to q&a forum type. We are leaving the water cooler inaccessible to guests for SEO reasons.
