  1. I'm wondering if we should just set a standard of making posts about stolen comics in the marketplace forums in the for sale section. It might better assure that those who are buying that type of comics keep their eyes open for the stolen goods. I'm guessing that has better results then just notifying everyone in general.

    What do you think?

    Maybe it's really supposed to be a shill trap. Instead of hiding behind a billboard in an interceptor, Arch is trying to lure malefactors who can't resist attempting to stir the pot.

    We've been getting about 1k signups per month for a few months. I think many of these folks are newbs who never quite find the place/time to join the conversation. I figured it might be because they are intimidated asking really inexperienced questions when so much of the content around here is more expert.

    So I figured I'd make a place for people to feel comfortable asking those questions, KNOWING (as I do) that everyone would be helpful and friendly to the new members. Right? :) :baiting:

  3. Not as you're doing it, no.

    You could try this:

    1. Go to galleries https://www.cgccomics.com/boards/gallery/
    2. Go the VCC Booths category I just made
    3. Add some images and make a new album
    4. After you have everything uploaded, you can then make a post, and use the "insert other media" drop down on the post and pick "insert existing attachments" and then choose galleries.
    5. Then you can insert those where you want them

    I THINK then that if you delete that album in the future, that would delete all the images... and MAYBE remove them from the post where you inserted them.

    I'm not sure if this gets you close to where you want to go, but you can play around with it, @DeadOne

    I had pm'd @Architecht, but thought I'd put it here as well to help get some understanding.

    I'll try to give an example in my next couple of posts.

     

    When you attach an image to a post and DO NOT insert it (using the plus sign) into the body of the post somewhere, then they just appear at the bottom on the post.
    If you insert them up above, then they appear where you insert them, and stop showing at the bottom.
    If you later delete the insertion at the top but leave them at the bottom, then they start showing up at the bottom again.

    If you just delete them at the bottom, then they are removed entirely - anything inserted in the post is taken out, and the image itself is removed.

    You can upvote a question at the top of the thread, and an answer to the left of the answer. (see screen shots)

    And by post a link to the authoritative Q&A, I just mean copy the URL from the address bar at the top and paste a link to the where the question was already answered. I mention that it's work, because then you'd have to go dig up where it was previously answered to get the address, and then come back and post it... which is sometimes more work than I want to do.

    I agree, although I think the way to handle that is:

    1. Answer thoroughly somewhere - preferably on a question with a VERY CLEAR title the represents the question (I know, this thread doesn't have that)
    2. Upvote that question so that it appears in the popular questions area, hopefully causing some to read the answer before asking
    3. When a redundant question appears, post a link to the authoritative Q&A post, OR if that's too much work, just reply and said "Try searching for the answer to this - it's been asked and answered previously" - then they can do the work to find the answer.

    Not really. I think she's asking for some basic information about how to establish a grade and then get a price guide value. This is a great opportunity to write an overall guide to establishing the value of any given comic book. There IS a process. It might look something like:

    1. Look up the price guide value for the book
      1. Where to look if it's been graded by a third party grading company
      2. Where to look if it's raw (it's probably raw or they wouldn't be asking this question)
      3. Explaining what the grading range looks like (numerical from third party graders, or descriptive (VF, etc.)
      4. Watching out for cover variants
      5. Identifying reprints
    2. Decide whether the general RANGE of prices is worth going any farther
      1. If it's a really common modern book without any worthwhile top end value, maybe you will not care to find out what condition YOUR book is in, because the value is so low it isn't worth the bother.
      2. General discussion on values by age
      3. The value of key comics / first appearances
    3. If the value of the book has the potential to be worth it, start evaluating the condition / grade of the book
      1. General grading guidance - what a low/mid/high grade book looks like
        1. Page quality
        2. Cover
        3. Completeness
        4. Creases / color breaks
        5. etc.
      2. Resources like the Please Grade My forum
      3. Information about how a dealer will evaluate the book when buying from you
      4. Paying someone local to evaluate the whole collection
      5. What third party grading is and how to submit (and deciding if it's worth it based on book value)
      6. Watching out for restoration
    4. Determining if the book has any potential for conservation
      1. Pressing the book for improvement
      2. Possible grade improvement
      3. Education on the controversies surrounding conservation and disclosure
    5. Education on the value (or lack thereof) of things like signatures (placement, signer, provenance)
    6. Places you can sell and the work / convenience trade off
      1. Dealers for less than market
      2. eBay / other for market - if you get lucky, or set a reserve, and do all of the work
      3. Fees involved
    7. Selling a collection versus selling piecemeal
      1. When is a collection worth more because it's together
      2. Possible value of selling a competitive registry set of comics
      3. What books realize more when sold separately
      4. Selling a whole collection so you don't have to bother with the low value books (i.e. someone who is willing to handle the low value books buys it all to get the high value books)
    8. Properly handling of the books while evaluating / selling
      1. Preserving the condition (watch those corners!)
      2. Bags and boards
      3. CRITICAL nature of proper packing if shipping anything

     

    Well, that's just off the top of my head. The point is, when someone asks a very GENERAL question, it isn't because there's no answer to be had. It's because they don't yet understand where to start. And there's a TON of info that can be provided. @Bomber-Bob

    After you insert the image in your signature, if you hover over the image you'll see some help text that says to hold control on the keyboard while right clicking. You'll get a context menu that includes "Edit Image" as a choice. Go ahead and pick that one. You can choose new pixel dimensions there.

    I added a new board for newbie questions to our community.

    I was finding a lot of general "getting started" kinds of questions about collecting showing up in the area we created for questions about the new boards, and it seemed like a good opportunity to let the community create a kind of Frequently Asked Questions area.

    The kind of board I created has some special features to help people find the best answers to questions and the most helpful questions. Special Q&A features:

    1. Members can upvote questions they think are great questions and most helpful to other members.
    2. Members can upvote the best answers in a question and push that answer to the top
    3. The ORIGINAL POSTER who asked the question can make a single answer as "The best answer"
    4. A block at the top shows questions without answers, and popular questions

    This is a great place to welcome new members, and help people join the hobby, so I hope you all take the time to grow the community and offer a friendly and helpful welcome.

    Also... who can get the most top answers? Hm...

    WEEELLLLLLLL, here's probably the real deal:

    1. Technically you should close a thread if it's closed to avoid disappointments and stay clear of the "only here" rule
    2. You can do that any number of ways
      1. Hit "mark as sold" which also puts "closed" in the title, kind of implying that it could be either sold or just closed
      2. Edit your thread title to add your own "closed" note
      3. Respond to the post with a "closed" reply (but that does bump it)
      4. You could also, I suppose, list a "Sale valid until XXXX date" in the original post, which would put people on notice not to expect to be able to buy it (or to only find it on the boards) past X time - then you wouldn't have to follow up and explicitly close it
    3. Really, though, if the thread just aged out and it's on page 300 and someone says "I'll take it" on a year old post, you won't really ever get "points" added to your account for that. You may get a NOTICE, which lets you know that technically someone wasn't right, BUT it isn't a big deal. And that's what happened to you. You got a friendly reminder / notice that results in no points added to your account and no ramifications to your access to the boards.

    You kind of do want to close threads, though. Not just to be a stickler for rules, but just to hold down confusion. Moderation only took action on something like that because someone complained. That means a potential buyer wasn't happy about something, and it's better for you to clear up those situations - EVEN if the complaint is not wholly reasonable - EVEN if it really just resulted in a friendly notice / reminder from moderation with no impact on your account.... it's probably still better to just prevent the misunderstanding through some pretty easy actions.

    But either way, I wouldn't be in any kind of fear that moderation is going to jump on your for having old threads out there and choosing to list on ebay after a REASONABLY LONG period of time. It would only get to the level of points on your account if you did it repeatedly, and it was debatable that time period was too short (resulting an active sale both on and off the boards).

    It sounds like you mean can you search in a specific FORUM for certain text in a thread. The answer is yes. You just click on the magnifying glass in the upper right. The results page would look like this:

    I guess if the items are unsold but still want to close/lock the thread, perhaps could do a simple rewording.  Kind of would be nice as we all have seen take its from threads years old.  We joke about it but it bounces the thread and takes up space for current sales threads.

     

     

     

    @pickycollector that's exactly the thing to do. There is now a button in the upper right corner at the top of a thread that lets you mark it as sold. This should lock the thread, put a red badge on it, and add some text to the title -- none of that should bump the thread.
