blue chip said.... I like this sort of thing probably more than most, with the proviso that I like the things that are genuine in-office production pieces that were made for the original printing. To me, and a few others, that makes them very interesting. The proliferation of faked "production pieces" has done much to damage the interest in them, as has the condemnation of some OA purists who sometimes get so caught up pointing out that it's "not original art" that they want you to believe a pre-production pieces with handwritten notes from a 1960s classic page should be no more valuable than a scan of the finished art made today -- which, in case it's not clear, is taking it, I think, way too far. Maybe if we could settle on a term for these things which did not offend the purists' ears, and which allowed us to condemn the fakery of scam artists offering "art" made yesterday at Kinkos -- maybe we could find what is their true value. This is the way I feel, too. Of course, the hand-drawn original art commands the highest price, and I think that's appropriate. The other production materials also have some collector interest, but are more likely to be faked. And if so easily faked, the market value has a plateau. Certification, authenticity certificate, is a rabbit hole I hope the hobby does not go down with any office pre-production material. Maybe it will remain a niche entry level field for collectors! June 1954. Toby Press. It is a trending comic book with some strong recent sales for comparison, this book shapes up nicely. Pre-code horror with a hint of good girl bondage. One thing to be aware of...when you bid in live auctioneers, it is not necessarily proxy, the house may just take your bid. Heritage will proxy for you, but they can bid you up, read the rules. David

The brothers have stretched to the limit (and beyond) the use of original art to collage new pieces. I like to think of their Frankensteins as stand-alone artworks. "Later" titles, price boxes, text added, "recent" additions.... These are terms with which the current prospective buyer should become familiar, as the Donnelly creations hit the secondary market. Some good stuff there, but just keep your guard up! David

Funny! I have tried to get her to expand her subject matter, but she has such a demand for the niche she has found. The galleries that represent her want her best marketable work. Galleries are under a lot of stress in our area. So, she accommodates the demand, and she actually enjoys the challenge of coming up with still life settings which fit the demand and still inspire her. Remember Elton Dorval who used to put original comic strip art in his paintings? David

We are very middle class, and my collecting has always reflected that. Any purchase is made with the understanding that it is not impulsive, and should at least hold its value, keeping pace with inflation. Naturally, that leads to an excess of caution, but it also means less conflict with my wife around my hobby. She is a fine artist herself... Julie's website link and she understands pricing, and fluctuation, so that is a real bonus when the topic comes up . Whenever I have sold, though, I still get this... That looks pretty good. I have seen a non-published Snoopy which I felt was real. It had come from the man's father who received it from the local newspaper editor at the paper he worked at. If this seller was trying to get the max bidding activity, he would have listed it in comic strip art, wouldn't he? Edit...I see it now in Original Comic Art, Drawings and Sketches. Could be a sleeper!

It's a funny thing about auctions. I just won 200+ rolls of BU (brilliant uncirculated) pennies 1964 US and Canada for under scrap, melt value. Searchable nickels for the elusive "extra water line", seven rolls. Auctions can be great for seller, or buyer. OR BOTH. David
