  1. I've had my Eerie # 23 for many years now. Just wanted a copy because it is my favorite Frank Frazetta artwork. In the mid 90's the great one showed up unexpectedly at San Diego Comic Con. He was walking around with Doc Dave and I had the chance to tell him how much I appreciated his artwork. He asked me which was my favorite and of course I named the Egyptian Queen. He just smiled. A moment I will never forget. This is a fun club and a fun thread. Thanks @Randall Dowling
  2. I love toy cars. I was a kid when Hot Wheels first came out and I loved them, spent all my lawn mowing money on Hot Wheels and comic books. I can't say I'm a collector of them, but I have several versions of the Hot Wheels 60's Batmobile and then I started getting the SDCC exclusives because I had a connection at Mattel. They really do a great job with the 'special' ones. The year the Action Comics # 1 car came out my connection gifted it to me. Very grateful for that. Here are a few of the others from my (so called) collection (there's more...but this is enought). Kitt is signed by The Hoff. He signed it for me the year it came out at San Diego which he came to the show for. He was very nice and accommodating with all the folks who wanted his signature. Sorry that 'The Homer' is sideways.
  3. It's fun to revisit this thread. Love the king! Here is a favorite Simon / Kirby cover.
  4. I did. I was definitely channeling my inner Robot Man on this swap meet pick.
  5. Found this one this morning at my local Swap Meet. My ‘landfill’ guy had this amongst a couple dozen girlie mags from the 50’s. It’s a bit beat up but what would you expect coming out of a landfill? It is the # 1 so how cool is that? I may hold onto this one because of the Everett cover. Like the newspaper boy said in ‘Better Off Dead’ …it cost 2 bucks.
  6. The book is absolutely gorgeous...everything an (early) Marvel Spidey fan would want. Mmehdy hit it right on the nose with the description. I've been picking up Taschen books for some time now and they outdid themselves with this one. Much past the 2nd editions of any of the titles and my interest may wane, but for now, I plan on getting the next volumes. My copy is # 2,137
  7. Happy Birthday Harley. So many memories....so many comics!
  8. I thought everything was well done, although I can't imagine the work load CGC Mike had to do. Total kudos and thanks for everything Mike! That being said, I would have participated without the option of getting a prize. Of course winning (congratulations Squirrel Guy and everyone else who made it to the finale) is always great and I'm sure the $$ was appreciated, however it was really the opportunity to match grading wits with everyone that got me checking the thread(s) over and over again. I learned a lot and had fun. I would think that the entries should be lowered to 200 as Mike stated and give folks who entered and finished (no matter how they scored in the earlier rounds) first chance, at least for the next one.
  9. I have had a great time with this. Thanks to @CGC Mike for doing all the heavy lifting.
  10. Thought I would go with Fox, but to just shake it up I decided to do two of the shorter, less loved (than Phantom Lady, Rulah, Jo-Jo) GGA runs. Still love 'em to death. Tegra becomes Zegra with #2 when she goes from a blonde to a brunette (counting the Tegra it's only a 5 issue run) Zago was only a 4 issue run and became My Story with #5 (included because the OP said we could post 10) The Zago 4 Matt Baker cover is an overlooked classic in my opinion.
  11. I figured that I would use my own definition of 'cheap' for this group. When buying a comic (or bidding on one) I usually define cheap as a (cool / fun) comic that I want that will cost me less than $50. That being said... most all of these are recent purchases and I paid under $50 each. Adventure 161 and 132 were part of a group that I recently got from a former collector. He had a complete run from 102 to the 300's. I didn't get them all, but I ended up with a bunch of them all lower to some mid grade in the lower numbers. I estimated that I paid far less than $50 each. Since I was the guy who got third shot at the group...none of the keys, but a fun group nevertheless. I picked these two because I like the covers. Western Fighters 1 I picked up for $50 at SDCC Spec Ed. this year. It's worn, but I love the Simon / Kirby cover Heroic 67 - I was surprised to find in a dealers dollar boxes. Thinking it was a mistake I showed it to him. He didn't care and then...neither did I. Didn't even realize until later it had the little 2 page Frazetta gem inside Donald Duck FC 348 - Found this one at a local swap meet. I had to pay the dealer a few bucks more for the double cover
  12. All my comics my favorites...so I thought I would post 5 that I have not posted before and all by the same artist (Jack Kamen). Still a tough choice.
  13. Back in the late 80's / early 90's I would occasionally find copies of # 113 at a local swap meet. I probably found more of those than any other number. Perhaps the alleged 'scarcity' is more of a distribution issue? Everytime I would pick up a copy (typically paid 50 cents to a dollar) I would check and see if it graded better than the copy I already had. Mostly they were about the same grade (lower / mid) , and this is the one I kept all these years. I've upgrade more than a few of my beaters over the years to complete my run, but never felt the need to upgrade this one.
  14. I am a comic collector and reader and I have a modest OA collection (my comic collection is modest as well). My core comic collection are what I call the Fox GGA books. While I collect lots of publishers, genres and ages, over the last 30 -40 years I managed to put together complete runs of Phantom Lady, Jo-Jo, Rulah, Zoot, etc. That being said... While not outside of those interests (comics and OA) my grail would be an Original Fox Comics GGA page (or gasp...a cover). I've never seen one. While once in awhile a Fox Crime, Romance or other OA page comes up (super rare as well), I have never seen a Phantom Lady (Fox), Rulah, or any of the other ones. I have been told they don't exist, but I struggle to believe that. If that impossible page turned out to be by Baker or Kamen...well, then I could just stop and smell the roses. What would it cost? Probably a lot. But a collector can dream...right?
  15. There are some incredible pieces posted on CAF this year and some awesome ones here as well. Here are mine. Superboy #83 interior page with the Kryptonite Kid (his dog Blor) and of course Krypto by George Papp. I love Krypto and getting this page with the Dog of Steel has been a hunt for many, many years. Legion # 300 Superboy 1/2 Splash / Title page by Kurt Schaffenberger one of my favorite Superman Family artists The Pale Light of Death by Pierce Rice (this is the title page of the complete story also posted on my CAF) Just a fun inclusion on my part. Mythological Menagerie by Don Rosa - Don hand colored this one before releasing it to the wild. I really love the extra clouds and foliage he added to this original that wasn't in the printed version. True Bride-to-be Romances cover by Jack Kirby - a surprise purchase for me. Never thought I would find a Kirby romance cover on the 'bay'. I have more than a few Kirby romance pages (both Simon & Kirby era and Marvel early 60's era), but was thrilled to add a cover to the collection. Thanks everyone. Wished I could have voted for myself, but I had to vote my conscience and there were too many spectacular pieces this year which were absolute knockouts. https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1714546
  16. I am a reader of comic books first and foremost. These days I spend more of my 'entertainment' money on reprint books (Marvel and DC omnibus hardcovers, Ducks, Horror Comics...the list goes on...my reading / collecting interests are all over the place). I am happy that there are so many reprints of golden age, silver and some bronze available now. I still love GA and SA comics and have a decent collection that I treasure and I do pick up a few here and there that I want to add to my personal collection. I don't see myself selling any of my personal collection in any near future but I do like to trade for something I don't have and want more than something I do have. I am part way down the deep rabbit hole of buying and collecting OA but man, has that gotten to be crazy. I buy that stuff because I like it but am glad that I got the stuff I did before it became more popular. Chalk me up to being a reader (first) and a collector second. I guess there is a good side to the books that i have purchased appreciating in value, but that has meant that those books I want to add to my collection have appreciated in value and are harder to get.
  17. Love George Perez. Couldn't wait for the next issue of Teen Titans to hit. I feel fortunate to have picked this up several years ago....featuring my favorite Titan
  18. I appreciate you notifying us die hard Frazetta lovers of this book. I followed the link and it is available for pre order. I had a question for Vanguard regarding the differences between the Regular and the Deluxe Slipcased version and they were kind enough to reply to me in short order... Deluxe will have 16 extra pages plus the slipcase. As the regular book included ALL the book covers, the 16-page bonus folio will be book frontispieces — in the early days, the books Frank did covers for, often had one interior frontispiece drawing at the front of the book.
  19. Published Interior Page Betty & Veronica # 68 Page 18 1961 Dan DeCarlo / Rudy Lapick
  20. I was faced with a similar dilemma and opted for the MARVEL COMICS LIBRARY SPIDER-MAN Volume 1 by Taschen. The description was impossible for me to resist. Limited to 5,000 so it won't be around forever, and under $200 (I ordered mine through Bud Plant). It's due out around the end of January. I have found that Taschen puts out a superior product. I'm looking forward to it. I suspect that if they have success with this one, there will be a volume 2.
