  2. Whack #3, GD 2.0, $10 SOLD 2 1/2" upper and lower spine splits - somehow, the cover is still attached!; aside from that, presents well - general wear
  3. Whack #1, VG 4.0 (but glasses are missing), $20 SOLD missing glasses; spine wear & 1" split; general creasing Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I have Whack #1 down as the very first of the Mad imitator issues to come out...

  10. Eh! #4, VG+ 4.5 RESTORED (I think), $100 SOLD general wear; some damage/chips along the spine; looks to me like someone may have put some sort of sealer along the spine from the inside - there's a bit of gloss along the interior spine, which (of course) isn't normal - so, I'm calling this one restored to be on the safe side
  11. Crazy #1, GD+ 2.5, $70 comprehensive wear; few bits of moisture staining here and there; cover is basically detached at lower staple; 2” upper spine split; 1” lower spine split; despite all that, the book presents really well
  12. Hello all, Offering up some raw Mad imitator undercopies (well, except for the Humbug...which I've decided to no longer collect). It's not easy to find these in decent shape...you won't have much luck with that in this thread, either Here's a link to my KUDOS THREAD The No PL/HOS members; The first "take it" posted in the thread wins (whether a straight thread take it, or a "take it via PM" if we reached a deal via PM). If you want to remain anonymous by purchasing via PM, this means there will be some risk of losing a book if someone posts a "take it" in the thread before I can mark the book SOLD based on your PM. Having said that, I'll mark books SOLD as soon as reasonably possible. If I put a book ON HOLD, that book is not available for purchase until it comes back off HOLD Payment I'll take PayPal, personal checks, or USPS money orders; I'll expect payment within 10 calendar days, or the book will be available for sale again (unless we've made other payment arrangements) I'll gladly consider longer-term time payments, but PM me to discuss terms before taking a book if you need that. Shipping Terms USA: - Shipping via priority mail: I'll charge you what USPS will charge me (typically between $8 and $13, depending on how many books you buy and how far away from Salt Lake City you are ); Canada, UK or Australia - Again, I'll charge you what USPS will charge me (we'll figure which is cheaper - first class or priority mail international - that'll depend on package value and destination) Other International Destinations: - case by case basis...I'll need to see if I'm comfortable with available shipping options Returns/Refunds I will accept returns for a refund for any reason within two weeks of your receipt of the books, as long as the books are returned to me as they were when you received them. For raw book returns, you cover shipping cost back to me unless I messed up. Thanks for looking! Ed
  13. Speaking of the Facebook group...I recently did a mail call post over there that I should also share here... Some of you know that I have an old journal thread here (which could use updating) that chronicles my EC completist exploits. Long story short, for years I have been a mere handful of obscure promo books away from having a copy of every book EC has ever published (pre-1957, that is), including the promos and obscure variants (where they exist), etc... There is an awesome Canadian boardie (as well as a top-shelf comic collector, comic historian, etc.) called @eccomic who himself has one of the best collections of rarities that I know of - if you have seen his posts here, you know what I mean. Over the last month or so, he offered to sell me TWO of these EC promo "unicorns." They are now both in my hands (by the way, these are not the first unicorns he has helped me obtain - he sold me my copy of Lucky Fights it Through some years ago). How does he come up with these books? I don't know, but I'm glad he does. EC published two promos for the Lutheran Church - "Across the Seas in a War Torn World" was one of them ("The Church that was Built with Bread" was the other). In the past, I have actually contacted a Lutheran minister to ask whether he had any idea where I could find these books...like, tucked away in some secret Lutheran closet somewhere - he had no idea what I was talking about. Turns out I didn't need a Lutheran minister...I needed our friend, @eccomic! Hard to know for sure, but I think it's safe to say that there aren't many copies of this promo left on the planet - one of 'em is now at my house!!: EC published a number of Reddy Kilowatt promos, but the "Light's Diamond Jubilee" version is one of the harder to come by. For me...no longer: Two more off the list - thanks again, @eccomic! I thank you, and my collection thanks you!
  14. That club is the only reason I ever go to Facebook
  15. This Frontline Combat #9 variant situation is a bit different from the others, in that it's not clear whether Gaines intended some of the FC #9s to be printed in yellow (which I doubt), or whether there was just an error in the coloration in a significant portion of the print run (i.e., an "unintended" variant...which I think is more likely). The only reason that this has legitimacy as a "variant" is that a guy (a great collector...who I know) thought that there were enough of each of the different colors out there that they warranted separate entries in the Grand Comics Database...so he input the entries there himself, and this "variant" was officially born. Of course, just to be on the safe side as a completist, I got a copy of each one
  16. +1 All of the Gaines Files Copies are orange, as is the color guide...so, then, I interpret "orange" to be the originally intended color...i.e., the "main" version.
  17. @OtherEric ...and, three variants of Mad #28, which differ by the text in the lower right-hand corner: 1) "with a late and utterly useless income tax guide" 2) "with very useful income tax guide" 3) "with enjoyable article on guided missiles"
  18. I don't want to pre-empt @OtherEric, but if I may...I have a couple of photos already queued up in my repository... Frontline Combat #9 has an orange and yellow "Civil War" variant...here they are together:
  19. Yep, Bedrock has a good one. Here's another one that's almost as good as Bedrock's . An "old style" slab example comes first (you have to watch the end of that example to see the removal from the inner well), and the "new style" slab example starts around 17:00.: https://youtu.be/fN3Po3bh9c8
  20. Tough to say. The colors look a bit off, and you can definitely see that there has been some horseplay with the stapling. Combine that with the fact that the cover stock seems different...
  21. I do think they are a pretty cool set of books to collect - and, if I was Canadian, I'm sure that I would want a complete set!! But yes, from an "EC purist" sense, I look at them as EC material reprinted by another publisher. Kind of like the Gladstone EC reprints - those are Gladstones, not ECs proper. I do think the Superior reprints are much more interesting than any other EC reprint, because they were being produced very close in time to the actual ECs they reprinted. Also, the motivation was different - I think Superior was doing these (and other American comic book reprints) because at the time, Canada had imposed a ban on the importation of American comic books...so, this was a bit of a workaround to Canada's own censorship movement - which is a fascinating part of that history. Still, they're not "ECs"
  22. TFTC 35: it looks to me like the staples that are there are the original staples (their appearance and location are consistent with the original staples) - I'm guessing that at some point someone added extra staples and then someone later removed the extra staples, leaving behind the extra staple holes; if this is true, then the book would not be "restored" based on this staple issue (the extra holes through the book would affect the grade of the book, of course) VoH 33: some collectors look for the Canadian (Superior) issues, and some don't - overall, I'd say that they are less sought after. As an aside, in my view they are not technically "ECs", because they were not published by EC - they were published by Superior. HoF 11: the earlier issues are not on card stock - the cover paper should be similar. Perhaps someone put a reproduction cover on a coverless copy? Pics?
