n2wdw's Tales of the Comic Book Room
Silver Surfer replied to n2wdw's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
Jimbo you need to throw a cigar in there too. -
Was Kirby the greatest artist, no, but what he created, all those characters, will never be equalled. It's like the Eddie Van Halen argument, was he the fastest, no, but his body or work, album after album for decades have no equal. There are a bunch of other great, fast and technical guitarists from his era but most people would be hard pressed to name 3 songs that they created. There is no comparison.

You need to find a hobby. I just kid, congrats.
-
Is this more of a Marvel vs DC question because I really don't see a comparison ( like Marvel vs DC).
-
Did Adam's actually create any characters of note? It's not even close, Kirby.

And if you want to almost guarantee taking a bath on a sale (only to see your piece relisted by someone else at one of these auction houses), list it on Ebay as an auction starting at $1.
-
I think that everyone had some valid complaints/points about gaps the various auction houses could improve on but at first glance the thread makes me chuckle a bit. No offense to anyone but it does come across as if we are outraged that the limo driver forgot to stock some Grey Poupon!

Brilliant cover. So many great ones in the JIM run, you could see that this was a labour of love for him. Beautiful copy. -
Exceptional major SA keys in the current Heritage Auction
Silver Surfer replied to namisgr's topic in Silver Age Comic Books
Never said it wasn't. Was referring to all those aggressive under bidders that disappeared when some of those Promise books were relisted. -
Exceptional major SA keys in the current Heritage Auction

Hyping up record sales seems to be a standard playback by most dealers. Gets them more exposure and clientele, pumps up prices. How about the Promise market, where did all those aggressive under bidders go? (Eye roll) -

Didn't they initially buy it for that billionaire collector? Did they buy it back from him? -
Unfortunately you may be 100% right about this.

In Praise of Single Pages

Anyone have page #1 of an MMC #9? -
Yup I thought that the Kang version in Loki could not be more boring, time to side step this character and cut their losses. A Masters of Evil plot line or Olympus battle with Zeus would be great but they would have to bring back Cap and Thor to make this work. Even a Bronze Age classic Nefaria story arc (incorporate Wonder Man) would be awesome.

I wouldn't think twice about it, seems like an Action #1 comes up for auction just as much as an IM #55. In comparison you rarely see high grade Tex #27's or MC#1's up for sale (or at least with the same frequency as an AC#1). I get the cache of it being the first big Superhero book but personally I'd rather own a Tec #27. The constant sales and resales kind of takes away a bit of its mystique.
-
Wouldn't it make sense to just sell it privately with the help of one of these major auction houses/dealers? Such a crazy book to own in that grade. There sure has been some spectacular SA keys offered for sake lately.
-
Seems like the best course of action probably would have been to retain your book if it was identified on the list, and then negotiate a settlement before sending them the book. If that failed then threaten to sue for damages. Once they have your book the above options appear to have gone out the window and you lose control of the situation?

Show Us Your Atlas Books - Have A Cigar
Silver Surfer replied to Silver Surfer's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
Haven't look at the census lately but this has to be one of the toughest in high-grade. I know there are a few raw copies out there but rarely if ever do you see 7.0+ hit the market. I eventually cracked this one out and when I did sell it a dealer bought it. Miss this copy. -
I want Heritage's platform for all auction houses but understand the costs associated with that kind of set up. You may not have 4 hours to spend on a Sunday to but most people bidding against you do so blaming C-Link seems a bit harsh. Overall they are great to deal with and have pretty good material. I do get multiple email reminders from them so it wouldn't take much to set a reminder for the auction end dates.
-
Or you (not you) are probably not looking at the auctions enough if you don't know when a piece is closing?

Is it too late to file a PayPal charge back? Tell him to F off, strong letter to follow. -
Unfortunately in this business that list can be too long. I saw a few pieces I wanted for years by a dealer I have heard nothing but horror stories about on these boards. Recently I saw it with another dealer (that I would buy from) so there must have been a trade/inventory swap. Hopefully that happens in this situation at some point.
