CGC's inability to detect all pressing doesn't excuse them not noting it when they are aware of it.

To my mind CGC stating certain books are pressed when they are aware of it implies any book without such a notation can be considered unpressed. It is a slippery slope.

And yet, this is exactly their position on trimming.

Personally, I think CGC should do away with any "missing" stigma for items/extras that were meant by the publisher to be removed unless it destroys the integrity of the comic book, e,g. cut-out Marvel Value Stamps or "in-page" coupons. IMHO, the other items are superfluous to value.

Like plastic bags that comics came in.  (thumbsu

  3. You guys are being too hard on the OP.  I think he should follow his instincts and stock up on all the Whitmans of FF 181.  Don't let price slow you down, @JohnCarter1912.  You're way ahead of the curve and someday in the future, you'll be proved correct.  You've found your passion, don't let these get you down.  Focus only on FF 181 and don't buy any other books.  You got this.

  4. I've known several collectors that bought multiple copies of both ASM 238 and FF 252 when they came out (including one who had subscriptions from Marvel) that all report bagging right away and then checking a decade or so later and finding no tattoos inside.

When I ran a comic book store in the early 90s, we still had back stock on FF252 from the original order and again, many copies without tattoos.  To be clear, the envelope was all there, just nothing inside.  I remember joking with a coworker that it could have been some prank by jerky adults who were supposed to be putting the tattoos into the envelopes, sticking it to the kids.  As @Lazyboy said, there are many copies that never had the tattoos but had the envelope.  I never knew anyone that took the tattoos out.

Irrespective of the non-existent difference in pricing in this book between "direct" and "newsstand",(because there isn't any)  I guess this book still isn't "crashing" the way you hoped it would after all (despite many other bronze age books falling all around it).  (shrug)

Earlier in this thread when it started to drop below $5k, you claimed it was an outlier.  Now, a single copy sells for $4500 and you proclaim it's out performing the rest of the market.  I'm not sure you understand how markets work very well and what is a long term trend vs. a short term blip.

As of today, there are over 500 copies in 9.8 on the census and I guarantee there are many hundreds more that aren't certified.  This isn't a scarce book even in 9.8.  If you want one, copies abound on eBay right now.  It's being propped up by dealers and speculators that have piles of it, which I'm guessing you do.  If I'm wrong and you don't have multiple copies of this book, feel free to correct me.

Treated myself to a nice little Original Pulp art B/W interior by Blue Book veteran Leland Gustavson for a mystery story by Stuart Palmer. About 1960, not sure which mag it was published in.

His style was very spare but he achieved a lot with simple black crayon strokes. I like the atmosphere.

I've always liked his work for the economy you described.  And that's a very nice piece!  Nice pickup, SA!  :applause:
