  1. Was this before or after the Hollywood party you were attending? Meanwhile, David Ayer thanking people at $600MM says something about reality where this film needed to land. Although I realize this is your 'stomp my foot' protest towards roulette44. -J.
  2. All thing's considered , it is absolutely a success (relatively). The success was certainly bought and paid for at a high price tag, but the fact that Warner was even able to overcome all those scathing reviews is remarkable. -J.
  3. No, it's just you. And now that the other boardie has come on and explained himself , I think you can stop now. Seriously , don't you have anything better to do than troll some dude's posts on a comic book chat board all day ? If you have something to say to me, say it in a PM. Try honouring the stated wishes of other boardies, and stop derailing threads, Frances. -J.
  4. this guy is completely clueless. going to add $10MM domestic. it did $10MM this weekend and will do $3mm tomorrow. the only chance it only adds $10MM domestic from here is if North American movie theaters go on strike for the next month. GOTG added nearly $60MM domestic from this point forward. SS is running 40% behind GOTG on a daily basis currently. math is hard for this guy. I've heard from some industry types that the budget on the film was closer to $225MM (including extensive re-shoots and post-production) with another ~$175MM spent on a nearly year long, non-stop marketing campaign. If this is correct , that would put Warners investment at about $400MM and it would explain why they still are not crowing, even at the prospect of a $700MM total gross, and continue to remain mum on sequels, spinoffs and whatever. -J.
  5. Me, too ... but I don't have a FB account. .... you say that like it's a bad thing GOD BLESS.... -jimbo(a friend of jesus) What's a "Facebook"? -J. It's something they invented to remind you (by email) of all your friend's birthdays. -J.

  7. Except of course Detective 1 isn't the first comic from that publisher (it's not even the 2nd title). Yes, and Marvel Comics 1 isn't "technically" the first "Marvel Comic" either. Come on man, you know what I meant. PS: Do the newcomers know there's a poll on the first page of the thread? http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=9543099&fpart=1 -J.
  8. Nah, it's pretty much just the same two guys. One of whom referred to me as "dense", the other as Don Quixote. Maybe you should be addressing this comment to those who are actually making the personal attacks. Regardless, I am agreement with Gotham Kid, and the thread should not be needlessly derailed by this sort of crapola. -J.
  9. Care to explain why you regretted submitting your books to them? Was it because they came back graded too loose or tighter than what you were led to believe by most comments here? Or was it due to slow turnaround times, poor communications, insecure packaging for shipping, etc? Or was it simply because they did not look nice and were not compatible with the rest of your slabs since the others are all CGC slabs? Your post just left a lot of unanswered questions that should probably be clarified a bit more. By the tone and context I presumed that he simply got a disappointing, cut-rate price for the slabs when he tried to sell.... -J. Another opportunity to jab. You never miss one, even it means speaking for others. +1, low blow J Huh? Then you may want to steer completely clear of this thread : http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=9538857&fpart=1 -J. This is called tilting at a windmill with a palm leaf in hand trying to do mortal combat. I'm starting to think you own stock in Voldy. I suppose, in a way you do. You know, they do have some semblance of a chat board up now, right ? Maybe you and roulette44 can meet up over there and say hi to each other and the 3 other people on there ? -J. I own no stock in Voldy but do have good friends who work there. I am happy to talk about negative and positives about both companies but as Roulette stated your attacks are baseless. ..as are your (and his) hyperbolic characterizations of my stated opinions about their labels, grading "consistency", prices realized compared to CGC slabs, resto disclosure/classification, etc. Oh wait...sounds like I actually have quite a few "bases" for my "attacks" after all. Go figure... Need another one? Exhibit 275,409- Those two "equally graded" 2.0 copies of AF 15 on Comic link. Meanwhile you seem to continuously jump to Voldy's defense (on a CGC chat board no less) as if they were your cheating girlfriend. You have buddies that work there? Good for you. Perhaps you're the biased one. I'll state my opinions when and how I please. Feel free to do the same. Just spare me the self-righteous lectures. -J.

  11. Not too sure how you can equate Marvel Comics #1 with Detective #1. Marvel Comics #1 had Torch and Subby...Detective #1 had.... Because the comparison is apt. Johnny Storm is the "Human Torch" that everyone knows today, and MC 1 isn't Subby's first appearance (MPFW). It's apt because you defy logic with your bias (why, I have yet to entirely figure out) and are constantly trying to build a position to fit your argument. Green Lantern, The Flash etc all had different alter egos between GA and SA. They're still GL and the Flash and their key 1st appearances are still important. Marvel did have Subby, Human Torch, the Angel and Kazar and while none are considered A list material right now (and that is mostly because the FF franchise has been cancelled by Marvel due to a movie rights battle) the Torch (both the android and Johhny) and Subby were mainstays at Marvel for decades starting in FF #4 through to the copper age. I'd call them B+ characters as they were heavily involved in the Marvel universe. And the Torch and Subby were A list material during the GA. As far as it being Subby's 1st appearance, nobody actually knows (and this coming from someone who is a fan and former owner of MPFW #1 and Marvel Comics #1). There is no clear proof as to whether MPFW #1 was ever distributed as the only known examples to ever be found were all from the estate of Lloyd Jacquet so it is more than likely that they were just trial books that never made it the public. If so, they were be akin to an ashcan (although they weren't ashcans). So when I state the basis for my logic you call it "bias", but when you do it's..... "facts"? Whether or not you agree with it, Subby's first appearance isn't MC 1. Nor is it Ka-zar's first appearance. A character named "human torch" first appeared in it, but has since been essentially lost to time and replaced by an entirely different character, 50+ years ago, that happens to have the same hero name. I suppose Angel first appeared in MC 1, but that doesn't really score you any "relevance points". No such vagaries exist with Cap 1. It's a clear cut win- first hero appearance , first nemesis appearance (and overall major Marvel Universe villain), first sidekick , classic cover, #1 issue, etc. His GA appearance wasessentially as he is today, much like Bats and Supes. The biggest thing MC 1 has going for it is the biggest thing Tec 1 has going for it-the first books of their respective publishers. And that's still pretty cool! Just not as cool. It's no wonder Cap handily won the poll. -J.
  12. It only needs $14.5MM to hit the $300MM Domestic Box Office mark (two weeks?). To hit the $700MM Worldwide Box Office, it needs $60.8MM (three weeks to include Japan's 9/10 release). It should break even by then. -J. I know it hurts - but you would think you're used to being so wrong so often by now (thumbs u Yes, I feel really inadequate for not having accurately predicted the gross of this craptastic movie to the nearest hundred million. -J. Inadequate? Yes, certainly. But don't forget pathetic too, please! If you have an issue with me for some reason , might I suggest taking it to a PM, rather than continuously making an a-hole out of yourself publicly ? -J.

  14. There's a 9.8 SS listed on Ebay now. Evidently the image was used for the reprint compilations in multiple different countries, not just France. Those other languages are starting to come to market now as well. I think I'm glad I held off from buying at those inflated prices. -J. I've seen those. They are different books; even the coloring is a bit off. To my knowledge, only the French variants have the virgin cover and 50/50 effect (not sure what the production term for that is). Perhaps that's why they are in demand, and the other issues not so much? Even so, they are climbing in price as well. But, to each his own. Ultimately, the market will decide value, as it has been doing. Oh, and the 9.9 SS sold. I don't think people were aware that the image was used in other countries until the other renditions started showing up. At least I didn't.... 8 of the 31 currently slabbed copies are 9.9's. Did that SS copy sell off eBay privately too ? -J.

  19. But a Voldy 9.0 AF #15 sold for $237K this past spring. http://scoop.previewsworld.com/Home/4/1/73/1012?ArticleID=176921 And a high grade Suspense 3 also sold well in a Voldy holder a year ago. Uber high grade examples of mega grails that only come around once in a blue moon isn't going to tell you much. A sample size of "1" is obviously not enough to establish a control. We certainly have plenty of other examples of Voldy selling at a discount however, and it is certainly possible, if not likely, that the same AF 15 in a CGC holder would have fetched an even better price. -J. I read somewhere here on the boards that Voldemorts seem to be catching up in grading tightness. Is that true? I did one submission to them and I really regretted it. Now that CGC fixed their slab/wave problem I'm definitely back in the fold. I've read that anecdotally as well, but I haven't seen any recently graded slabs in hand personally. -J.

  22. This is the book you speak of: https://comics.ha.com/itm/silver-age-1956-1969-/amazing-fantasy-15-verified-signature-marvel-1962-cbcs-vf-85-off-white-to-white-pages/a/7139-91159.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515# The signature isn't visible. I don't think having a signature impacted the value of this book. I'm thinking it is the condition of the book and the fact it is CBCS. If this book was cgc 8.5, SS, it would have done much better. Yup. -J. Jay; Since you seem to be the acknowledged expert on CGC grading verus the other company, how would you grade this 8.5 signed copy relative to the recent CGC 7.5 copy (which was once a CGC 5.5 copy by the way ) and which managed to sell for something like $82K, or a premium of 50% above the condition guide price? Maybe we should snap up all of the key books graded by the other company and simply send them into CGC for regrading as there's obviously a ton of potential easy money to be made here. For example, even if CGC came back with a grade of 7.5 on this 8.5 signed copy of AF 15, you would still be ahead of the game. Of course, you would stand to lose a bit if it came back as a CGC 7.0 signed copy. But just imagine the almost 6-figure profit you would make if it came back in the same 8.5 grade or your big jackpot winning if it came back as a 9.0 graded copy (which I personally don't see any chance of by the way). I guess this goes to show the power of the brand and being first to market, even though historical evidence has clearly shown the product to be of less than consistent quality over the years. I'm no acknowledged expert but there is a general consensus that Voldy slabs regularly do not sell at par to CGC. Perhaps it does have something to do with being "first to market". Perhaps Voldy's grading standards are not as strict as CGC and the market has figured that out. I have my own opinions why, and have expressed them before so will refrain from repeating here. But...to answer your question , that Voldy 8.5 looks more like a 7.5 (CGC) to me. As for the CGC 7.5 that started a 5.5, I can't speak to how it looked before or whatever was done to it to "upgrade" it, but whatever that was it looks reasonably graded to me now (even if a bit soft). So as you said , all things being equal, there would only be a $5k spread between the realized prices of the two books, which would not even cover a typical 10% auction house vig At those prices but could be accounted for by the "Voldy Discount". At the end of the day your question essentially answers itself (and as others have stated), it most likely came down to (loose) Voldy grading on the "8.5" more than anything else. -J.
  23. The poor thing was obviously "stan-lee'd". That kinda accounts for the 2500 imho. , not a fan of the signature series? Yes, it would appear that a signature increases the value of an otherwise worthless common drek book. When it comes to a true vintage collectible comic book, however, a signature is probably treated more like a clear and visual defect by the marketplace. Probably one of the reasons why the signed 8.5 copy of AF 15 in the most recent HA auction managed to sell for only something like more than a $35K discount to the condition guide price.
