  1. I'm bored, lets bump this crappy thread once more, for fun

How about a well loved 31?

or a 35, from the same collection, no BC

My kind of books especially the 35. Man I am starting to think a large part of the pre Robin books are owned by only a select few that hoard them....

When there's only 20-40 unrestored copies of a book known to exist that isn't really that hard to do. (thumbs u

There are hundreds of copies (large portion unrestored) of these books out there. They may not come to market that often bc folks don't want to sell them, but 20-40 is absurdly low. I myself have sold over 30 copies of Tec 31 of which some 18 were unrestored.

That wouldn't surprise me but Rick, how many of those copies do u think may have just been the same copies circulating back to you. And how many copies on the census do u think might be resubs? I just don't think there's many of these books out there, or readily available as you said.

  3. I do not own a 9.8 New Mutants 98 but wish I did (I have 2 lower graded ones)....Although I like the Deadpool character I do not LOVE the Deadpool character...with that being said it's a no brainer that Deadpool and Harley Quinn are the two biggest characters to come out of the past 20-30 years.

They will be a part of pop culture for decades to come and as the younger generations mature these will continue to be key books.

I will be investing in both New Mutants 98 and BA 12 because I feel these 2 books bring the most potential moving forward (outside of DC & Marvel Silver Age of course)

Agreed. Although NM 98 is a true first appearance, but alas, BA 12 is not. I do believe that will hinder that book in the long run.

    -J.

Whether it's "first appearance in a comic" or "first appearance in the DC universe proper" the market has already spoken and they (as a collective) don't seem to care about splitting the hairs.

The fact that Harley was first introduced in cartoon form is what helps cement BA12 as the go to Harley book (because the cartoon is consistent with the animated stylings of the Batman Adventure line).

    90 day GPA average for a 9.8

    BA12 = $666

    Batman:Harley Quinn OGN = $251

    Batman 570: $46

So when faced with choosing between 1st comic book appearance (BA12), 1st in continuity appearance (B:HQ OGN) or 1st appearance in an in continuity comic book (Batman 570), the overwhelming choice by the market is BA12

Its like the IH180/181 argument. Sure Wolverine first appears in IH180, but the market has shown that it cares MOST about IH181, so that's what matters.

You could have made the exact same statment about IH180/181 back in the 80s (as in "The fact that IH181 is not Wolverines true first appearance will hinder the books in the long run") and that would not have held up.

I think there's enough evidence on BA12s performance so far that we can say it's growth will only be affected by the level of popularity that Harley maintains in comic books and general pop culture.

Respectfully, the hulk 180/181 analogy is not entirely applicable in that regardless of whether or not the hobby values his first "full appearance" more than a "cameo", is not the same as the first appearance of a cartoon character in a comic book. A better analogy would be transformers #1. The first appearance of the transformers in a comic book. Basically a very inexpensive book in a 9.8, even with all the toys and movies. I think when Harley became popular people wanted to find a book to go after that featured her early comic book appearance. BA 12 is obviously the best anyone could come up with. But regardless of what it is currently selling for, I give NM 98 the definite edge in importance because it actually is the first appearance of deadpool, and not just some cartoon character retconned for the first time into a comic book.

    -J.

respectfully I only think Transformers #1 would work as a better analogy would be if Optimus Prime was later brought into the Marvel Universe and became a member of the Avengers, gained widespread marvel comics fandom and was the obsession of lots of cosplay/con/comic book fans (and yes I know there was a Transformers vs Avengers mini a few years back, but that wasnt in continuity).

Harley was a DC Animated character that was included in that Animated shows DC comic book line, who was then brought into "proper" continuity by showing up in the mainstream Batman titles. She never existed outside of DC (unlike Transformers, which existed on their own, in their own universe, in their own continuity for decades), so it's not like they are trying to shoehorn in My Little Pony. Harley is a DC character who got popular in her original animated format so she moved into the main universe to continue to grow. DC has many animated titles right now (Teen Titans, Justice League) so I imagine something like this could happen again...

I agree with everything you just said for the most part. But I still stand by my assertion that BA 12 is a weak example of a character's "first appearance". As much as I like harley we just have to accept that there is no real first appearance of her that will ever exist in a comic, and that's why it is not on par with a NM 9.8.

    -J.

wouldn't you consider either Batman:Harley Quinn OGN or Batman 570 her first appearance in comics since you seem to be anti her animated version, and the OGN and 570 are not the animated version, and Batman 570 is a comic book for sure.

wouldnt that be her first appearance by your thinking? (since BA12 isnt?) She's in continuity now so at SOME point she had to first appear... the market thinks that its BA12, or to a lesser degree the OGN... but somewhere it had to start.

Do we have other examples of this? where the first appearance seems out of continuity? Maybe something from an OGN?

Personally I like the OGN but again it is just unfortunate happenstance that she first appeared in a cartoon, IMO as a comic book purist and aficionado it diminishes the importance of the book, and exists more as a novelty book.

Still love the character though. She's my number 2 favorite female character behind black cat.

    -J.

  4. Perhaps. But nobody really cared about the book until it was decreed that BA 12 was the closest anyone would ever get to a "first appearance". But as it increased in value plenty of copies came out of the wood work and there are dozens of raw copies available on any given day. The book is not remotely rare either.

    -J.

  7. Pittsburgh is a zombie mecca. Out at one of Todds (he is a senior overstreet advisor) stores at century 3, they have all the early Walking dead issues collecting dust for about 6 months now in the case. At the mills store they have a bunch of walking dead back issues to on display noone seems to be interested in. (they actually downsized the Walking dead section at Cranberry last year)

At the recent Pittsburgh Comic-con usually there are lots of people buying walking dead merchandise but this year was definitely a bust.

Zombies are definitely fading a bit but thats the thing. I dont think the book will ever drop below $500, even when the dust settles.

But realistically, looking at the census numbers (quite a few 9.8's there) there is no way this book can maintain such a high value.. especially with the sharp decline in zombie popularity this last year... the fact every season but the first is kind of bad isnt doing the book good either.

everything boils down to census numbers vs demand. however this book despite the 10,000 print run was still horded and there are hundreds if not, thousands of 9.8's out there.

The fact walking dead #1 is selling for the same price or more than a 9.8 bronze key is sort of wonky considering those rare bronze 9.8's have as few 5-25 total in the census.

I respectfully disagree. By now WD 1 is a well entrenched modern blue chip key, to the point where people buy on the dips, thus raising the price back up whenever it falls below a certain level. Its initial print run is actually closer to 7300, not near the 10k you mentioned, and while 700 9.8/9.9's on the census certainly sounds like a lot, it is not as though they are all on the market simultaneously, and clearly their scarce availability at any given time is enough to maintain a very strong price point.

    -J.

  8. As far as I can tell, the last 7 sales for #1 in CGC 9.8 on eBay are $1920, $1800, $2350, $2200, $2000, $2050, and $1975. The sale before that at $1250 was most likely bogus since the seller got negged for not delivering the book.

Yes that was a bogus sale. The book is on solid ground in the $2k range to be sure. But you left out the heritage sale for over $3.3k. What the f- was up with that ?

  10. Showcase 4

    Showcase 8

    Flash 105, 106, 110, 113, 117, 122, 123, 139, 140

I'm still trying to find low grade showcase 4 for a decent price. I regret not buying last year.

Even though I overpaid for my mid grade copy last year I guess I'm glad I bit the bullet when I did. Although to be fair I have never seen a "decent price" for this book in any grade, probably having a lot to do with the fact that there are barely 200 blue labels on the census, and fully 33% of all copies on the census are restored. Those numbers rival some GA keys.

    what grade?

  12. Why do you consider it an appearance?

You don't need to be in the narrative to appear.

It's funny how people view appearances like these. Most of you guys seem to see it as insignificant. I see the opposite. It's an appearance the goes under the radar until it's uncovered by an enthusiastic collector. I understand most collectors want the flashy cover done by the hot artist and that's all well and good but one of the reasons I collect Harley appearances ( and early Deadpool appearances ) is because they are hard to find. Even BA 12 was unknown to collectors for some time despite the fact that she's on the cover. This particular issue is similar to Batman and Robin Adventures 1 where Harley appears on a poster on the cover. Both issues are early appearances that I would want to own.

This is all academic since if you want her actual first appearance you will need to download a gif from the cartoon and store it on your computer. :tonofbricks:

  13. I found cgc grading to be far too tight when they first started, then they did have a looser period that basically compensated for that earliest era. Like any new company it took time to find their bearings and I have generally found their grading to be consistent for the last five years or so with little mini tight/loose cycles here and there. The only thing that has really changed since then is their acquisition of CCS and the acceptance of pressing as being "not restorative"

    -J.

  14. yep the very first true app of Wolverine

That tiny little cameo? It's nothing, not even worth mentioning. It isn't like you can really tell it's Wolverine, or he says his name, or interacts with the characters...

Yes indeed, that too is a cameo.

Didn't OSPG and uniformed noobs who liked the cover determine that?

Popular opinion is hardly the arbiter of fact. If that were so Obama would be a Muslim and the earth would have been created in 6 days.

Whether or not you personally agree with it, it is what it is.

Comics & OA are completely different animals. The last page of 180 is superior to the 1st page(if it exists) of 181. 2c

Agree absolutely. As a standalone piece of OA I would take that 180 page any day over any individual page in 181. I don't know if it will break a million or even 500k, but wherever it ends up it will probably cost more than some real estate I've bought lol.
