  1. Serious question: not looking for names or a list (but provide whatever you want), how many "whales" are in the hobby? I'm specifically referring to people that can and often do drop 6 figures on OA frequently (monthly or whenever they want). Excluding the high volume known dealers, of course.
  2. They should get Stan Lee to say "TRUE BELIEVERS! This is the greatest Ditko ASM Page of ALL-TIME!"
  3. I am selling several Marvel Omnibus volumes. All are in excellent condition, unsealed and first printings. $40 per volume plus S&H. Please send a PM. First up is Frank Miller's Daredevil.
  4. My first exposure to D&D was the 1983 Box Set when I was 8, which my mother surprisingly bought for me when I saw it at the store (a rare occurrence). The kid that lived next door to me, who was my age, had a college age brother who had the 3 core AD&D books (it wasn't long until I had them too). So my nostalgia for that era is in the 1977-79 and 1983 periods. Here are some of my favorites from the PHB and DMG.
  5. Frank Mentzer recently posted on Facebook that he he just found the Elmore Red Box cover art and it had sold (pending) for a substantial amount (has to be mid 5 figures at least, probably higher than that). He also found the prelim of the 1st proposed version (attached). In Elmore's book he says that TSR would take all of the used production art and throw it away so they (TSR employees) would go dumpster diving for this stuff. The fact that any of this art is still around is remarkable. The closet comment really rings true.
  6. I love the Troll design in that book. Probably my favorite monster design ever.
  7. The Artists of TSR Are there any fans of the artists at TSR, specifically the professional artists they hired starting from 1983 onwards? My favorites were: Jeff Easley, Larry Elmore, Keith Parkinson and Clyde Caldwell (special mention of Brom on the Dark Sun products in the later days of TSR). All of the covers these guys produced (Red Box, the AD&D hardcovers, Dragon Magazine, Dragonlance, etc.) were a great time for Fantasy art. Caldwell's art has probably aged the worst to my eyes, it really has a mid 1980's vibe to it that looks dated. Elmore's early 80's stuff has that too to some extent, but it still works for me in a way that Caldwell's doesn't. The Red Box by Elmore will always be my favorite piece from TSR with his Death of Sturm and Avalyne the Life Giver rounding out the top 3. Strangely, I actually prefer Easley slightly to Elmore, but he doesn't crack my top 3 pieces.
  8. Are Condition Issues a Deal Breaker For You? Question for the board: If you are interested in buying a page and it has condition issues such as water damage, tears, heavy tanning, etc. does that prevent you from buying it? Personally, I avoid pages that have any of these condition problems. However, if it was something I really wanted I would be lenient on the tanning.
  9. I'm dropping the prices on the Kitson Legion pieces to $150 each and the Smith Red Sonja to $200. Shipping cost is unchanged.
  10. I'm not a big fan of altering original art in any way, whether it is adding inks or even worse offenses. The fact that the Donnelly's had somebody add lettering to a Perez JLA/Avengers page and have covers altered to make them look like the published version by adding logos, etc. is in the territory of that guy that used colored pencils to color a Byrne X-Men splash featuring Arcade, imo. If you like something enough to buy it, like it enough to leave it alone. Once modified it just isn't as appealing.
  11. So I'm pretty pleased with my latest acquisition, a Thor page by John Buscema. When I saw this one I really liked the second and fifth panels a lot, but the third panel was the clincher for me. That panel really pops, those Esposito inks really mesh perfectly with Big John's pencils on Silas Grant. Overall I think the page really captures the essence of that early 70's era of The Mighty Thor. http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1373768
  12. Andy Smith Red Sonja Model Sheet - $250 http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1061078 Barry Kitson Legion 10 page 20 - $200 http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1060444 Barry Kitson Legion 19 page 12 - $200 http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1060754 Shipping is $25 for one or multiple pieces.
  13. I have 2 pieces priced for $75 Gary Frank Supergirl page http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1063405 Barry Kitson Legion page http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1060445
  14. Phil Jimenez X-Men: Liberators page featuring Nightcrawler, Wolverine and Omega Red that I got for Christmas. http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=1369188&GSub=149875
  15. Finally pulled the trigger on a All Star Batman & Robin DPS I've wanted for a good long while. This page has great shot so Robin in costume with Batman in costume but with his cowl not over his face in most panels. These 2 pages are actually where Batman reveals his secret identity to Robin (while they try to save Hal Jordan's life). Some excellent storytelling panels on this one. Thanks for looking and comments are always appreciated! All Star Batman and Robin DPS
  16. John's internet persona is very anti-social toward fans, which is odd considering these are people who love him. That said it is the internet and everyone comes off that way from time to time. is byrne the same in personat convention appearances and signings? Byrne doesn't do conventions or signings anymore.
  17. Byrne and his board are a trainwreck. He doesn't understand how "Bad Byrne Stories" get started and doesn't realize that his comments on his board are perfect examples of "Bad Byrne Stories". Here are some gems that he has said on his message board and at other places over the years that perpetuate this opinion (Crocodile Hunter is a real standout). http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/John_Byrne That said, he is a great artist and am a fan of his work, but I don't care for him as a person.
  18. Does any Jack Cole Plastic Man art still exist? There doesn't seem to be any on CAF (that I could find).
  19. Damn, that's great! I would love to add a Lee/Williams piece into my collection at some point. Glad you like it.
  20. I just added a Jim Lee Superman Unchained Double Page Spread to my collection. This is my first Lee piece and am very happy to have it in my collection. http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1116833 Thanks for looking. As always, comments are welcome and appreciated.
  21. I had a lot more respect for Lichtenstein until I discovered it was blatant theft. Agree on Lichtenstein 100%. Redrawing a Kirby or Gil Kane panel doesn't do a lot for me.
