I never did get a chance to meet Rick, but Chuck McCleary on the other hand I did. In fact, some friends of mine and I bought his entire, formidable, collection of golden age back in 1996
What was his reason for selling his entire collection at that point in time?
I guess he just thought it was a good time. He started buying stuff again afterwards as far as I know. He had over 2300 golden age books when we bought the collection. We called it the More Fun Collection after the comic store I owned in New Orleans
So...my Targets from the More Fun collection used to belong to McCleary? Wow...that's cool...even though I never knew him...

Hmmm...I think I'll write my name on all my books...

Well, wonders never cease...I just looked at ebay and bought a True Sport Picture Stories V3#10 for $20...I'm stoked...yeah...
Scroll down...
See what you do here, Bob?

OK...so what do you guys think my copy would grade? 9.4...9.6?
Hint, it's the first one in this thread...
It wouldn't surprise me to see it get it either grade, but I would lean towards 9.6. Sharp, sharp book.

He's honest, he's smart, he's tough...to find...out of 4 dealers I just checked, only Jef Hinds has a copy (and it's very low grade)...

I predict you get a 9.2 or better even with that little ding...

What about Herbie Skogland's...
Got a big pile of 'em but you will really have to wave your guide hard and whine loud to get any.
Oh, I don't want any of them...just wondered if you had any...

Answers to my photo quiz which only one person tried to answer:
1. Two men are reading Superman in Calgary Canada on 3/13/49. The back cover showing "Tops in Comics!" is a Canadian edition of Superman 56. Copies of Tessie and Oscar can be seen on the rack.
2. A boy is reading a copy of Donald Duck "The Terror of the River" in Paris France. A beret was commonly worn in France.
3. A newsstand in Mexico City. Mexican versions of Walt Disney Comics, Warfront (Frentes de Guerra), Buffalo Bill, Nancy & Sluggo, Little Lulu, Woody Woodpecker, Porky Pig & DC superheroes (Relatos Fabulosos).
4. Kid reading Mickey Maus #195911 from 1959 in Berlin Germany.
5. Renting comics in Hong Kong. Blackhawk, Lovelorn and a Classics Illustrated can be seen in the background.
6. Man reading Superman et Batman et Robin #15 in Paris. A French Citroen car is in the background.
7. A newsstand in London. Copies of Nyoka 55, Bob Colt 6, Hopalong Cassidy 57, Bob Steele 5, Young Eagle 6, Polly Pigtails 36 are on the rack with the British comic Chips.
ALRIGHT! I win by default...

What about Herbie Skogland's...

No...I bought 2 houses in Beverly Hills...

That wasn't the worst one I sold...I sold an X-men 1 in about 9.2 the same year...but i really didn't like the Action 6...after all, one of the stories was just in B&W...what's up with that?
But, it is a good thing I've held on to the vast majority of my books...

Kinda funny. Until recently, I thought this was Shirley Temple on the cover.
Is that our favorite "dimple girl" on the cover? Oh, nevermind...I see dukedog already answered that question...

Danny Fuchs was the one I was thinking of. Didn't know Coddington died...he sold my VG Action #6 for me in 1980. It's probably been pressed and is now in a plastic holder that says 6.0 on it. I got $300 for it back then. It took him 6 months to find a buyer...wow...
a little background on the Action 6 because I know you don't care:
I found it in a Utah antique store in 1973 and paid $30 for it. $30 was guide back then and I was NOT happy that I had to pay guide for an Action that didn't even have Superman on the cover, just a stupid gorilla...and Jimmy Olson was only called "office boy". That sucked...End of story...

I once drove on a highway that Paul Harvey had driven on...and I once was listening to the radio and Paul Harvey was talking on it...true stories...

Whatever happened to that guy that used to advertise in the price guide for Superman stuff? Claimed to be the world's greatest Superman collector...

Well, that makes two of us now...but yours is in a lot better shape than mine. The only problem I see with yours is the missing corner piece and a couple edge tears. Mine looks fairly good from the cover, but the book is falling apart with loose pieces all over the interior. I would grade mine Fair-.

So, Bob...among your vast collection of junk, do you happen to have a copy of Space Thrillers? It's the 100 pg. Avon 25center. I've shown mine twice on here and nobody else seems to have one...or they don't feel like sharing it...
-
I think we need to drag Harvey in here to make a list of what's been shown...
-
Hurry and find another copy so I can buy that one from you...
BTW, I just made some flickr albums of some of my GA books...here's the one for my favorite covers...
There are 6 other albums too...check it out...you might have all of them...

Ignoring me, huh?
My 50 Year Junk Obsession

I remember the climb up the stairs very well. I also remember seeing a couple guys in the loft one day with cardboard boxes filled with ACG stuff from the 25c boxes in the hall. I wonder who they were? And, how many others who remember Cherokee thought Burt's brother downstairs looked a little like Barnabas Collins from Dark Shadows?![:insane:](//content.invisioncic.com/r266625/emoticons/insane.gif.ab64644142269636364e121c9c1bad25.gif)
He was a very "reserved" fellow...
