  1. I found a nice collection of late 1950s men's mags a few years ago and they sold for crazy amounts on E-Bay. Good luck with your sale.

I'm rapidly discovering that ebay.au is way behind you guys.

I'm having issues with some listings - I may have to list on the USA site, and mark as 'sell internationally' whilst opting out of the GSP etc etc.

Crazy. A Nipple apparently destroys the fabric of Australian society, according to ebay.au.

Gumtree/Amazon may be getting the listings.

Luckily I had only listed 20 odd magazines - all 'damaged' as per comic standards. The rest - well some are 40 year old mint copies.

I'm sure I'll find a happy medium somewhere. I think ebay forgets it's 2014, and anything is available to anyone via the internet.

I have sold lots of mens mags on Ebay so here are some things I've found work -

    1) under no circumstances use the word "adult" in your title-- instant flag and they will remove your listing.

    2) if you are having trouble with the regular portion of the site-- use the Everything Else portion of ebay that is restricted to adults only. There is a section there for, well, everything-- but more importantly the more hard core type of gent mags, porn related material, etc

    3) be extremely honest in your description of even the most beat up copies of magazines-- condition is important but they are very much like us in terms of seeing value in rare stuff and accepting spine wear, creasing, tears etc -- as long as they know what they are getting and you are priced decently.

    4) scans are nice but multiple pictures of the front, back, major flaws, and interior flaws are appreciated and help sell a book. ALWAYS check to make sure centerfolds or posters (is the issue complete) are present. Lots of Penthouse issues come with enormous posters inside of them that are significant to collectors. Treat a centerfold description like you would describe a cover.

    5) in the cases of damaged books-- it sometimes helps to bundle several of them together -- plenty of pictures-- spread them all out for the main picture, then add at least cover pictures of the lot-- or two per picture. Again-- description is key -- you don't need to give it a grade-- give it words explaining what is good and bad about each (tight spine, gloss is lacking, foxing on front right corner --- etc)

    6) be sure to put any major stars or known commodities in the title if you can-- helps the search engine. I also tend to highight anyone of note in the book in the descriptions.

    7) Sometimes age isn't the big factor-- I have found CONTENT is hugely important (porn stars, actresses, raunchy, big boobs etc sell for more than cover on more recent copies if they are in awesome shape (my 1 year subscription to SCORE magazine years ago netted me a nice profit because I took care of the books and a bidding war occurred.

    8) price it to start above your rock bottom number unless you are ok with it taking some time to sell. It is a large number of books out there for certain types-- kind of the reason the obscure titles are bringing in more money as well. 90's Playboys are

hard to sell -- major glut. But 2000 + Playboys move pretty fast.

Anyway-- hope this was useful. I found this to be true while peddling my dad's old porn stash along with my own newer books as I tried to clean out my house before the move. I may be a little over the top in how much effort I put into my listings-- but buyers seem to be drawn to people who take the time to accurately reflect the item versus major mag retailers who tend to do the bare minimum.

  2. Another Maine find. I think I should take a trip out there sometime and scurry around the antique shops hm The person I bought my Bat 1 from years ago found the book in Maine as well.

lol --- for some reason (probably your avatar and the item you were talking about) I heard Adam West doing his campy Batman voice while reading your post. The only thing missing was "To the Bat copter!"

  3. wow--- I didn't even mention where I went and you guys were right on it. Well there are two of them in the immediate area so maybe they are the only games in town. Not sure. Not sure I am going to pursue this much farther either.

It did appear picked to death I suppose.

But this thread still delivers. I kind of went mostly to see if I could find one or two gems to post here. Mostly what I saw was overpriced modern drek, overpriced Bronze beat up dogs, and maybe one silver age Jimmy Olsen in terrible shape that someone had filled in the letters on the title. SO who wants to see that garbgae let alone pay for it? not me, not anyone really

I've only lived here since June so we'll see how it goes. Kind of pisses me off since I moved from living in Tampa for 30 years to see that Tampa Con thread.

  7. Doctor strange was another counter culture hero like the Hulk in the 60's he lived in Greenwich Village in the early 60s which was a mecca for music, hippie counter culture, and mind expanding drugs. Ditko's cosmic art was certainly psychedelic lsd trippy inspired as well as just flat out awesome.

    From wiki

The stories showcased surrealistic mystical landscapes and increasingly vivid visuals that helped make the feature a favorite of college students. Comics historian Mike Benton wrote,

"The Dr. Strange stories of the 1960s constructed a cohesive cosmology that would have thrilled any self-respecting theosophist. College students, minds freshly opened by psychedelic experiences and Eastern mysticism, read Ditko and Lee's Dr. Strange stories with the belief of a recent Hare Krishna convert. Meaning was everywhere, and readers analyzed the Dr. Strange stories for their relationship to Egyptian myths, Sumerian gods, and Jungian archetypes."[3]

"People who read 'Doctor Strange' thought people at Marvel must be heads [i.e., drug users]," recalled then-associate editor and former Doctor Strange writer Roy Thomas in 1971, "because they had had similar experiences high on mushrooms. But … I don't use hallucinogens, nor do I think any artists do."[4]

"Steve Ditko contributed some of his most surrealistic work to the comic book and gave it a disorienting, hallucinogenic quality. Dr. Strange's adventures take place in bizarre worlds and twisting dimensions that resembled Salvador Dalí paintings. Inspired by the pulp-fiction magicians of Stan Lee's childhood as well as by contemporary Beat culture, Dr. Strange remarkably predicted the youth counterculture's fascination with Eastern mysticism and psychedelia. Never among Marvel's more popular or accessible characters, Dr. Strange still found a niche among an audience seeking a challenging alternative to more conventional superhero fare

really? people are giving Stan Lee credit for this one too?

Guess he said the word strange in a meeting and that's all it took to claim he came up with the whole thing. Dr. Strange came out of Ditko's mind alone. Others worked with that concept afterwards.

regardless-- ti will be a challenge to make this movie appealing to the typical Marvel movie audience imo-- this stuff is tough for many comic enthusiasts let alone those who never read them.

  8. This thread is brutal. Hope you feel better, Manicnerd. :foryou:

Seriously, why do you keep coming back? (shrug)

To voice an opinion. This IS in CG, is it not? And perhaps more importantly, to wish a fellow boardie luck in his battle.

Why single me out? It was a tiny post in a sea of noise.

I single you out because you have repeatedly bashed this thread and have stated clearly that I rule it with "righteous indignation." You said right above - "this thread is brutal."

Are you f'n kidding me? I don't get what anyone thinks that I get from this thread other than a headache. I try to appease any many people as I can. I try to be considerate when people Pm me for advise and suggestions. CAHokie is right and it has led to :slapfight: between us which sucks. 1Cool is right that he cared a lot about this thread and has PMed me with about 10,000 suggestions and I had to threaten a restraining order against him! :D

But I don't understand why people have blamed me or criticized me for anything other than trying to keep the thread honest? There is no "inner circle." CAHokie was my friend long before this thread and was the one who :baiting: me to watch PIF. Hector was one of my good friends before this thread. I told him I was thinking of making a new thread and he offered encouragement. Cricket is just as vocal (and was before) in the PIF thread. Kav is vocal here and every other thread (and has easily been the most generous person in this thread). The idea of an "inner circle" with special perks or prizes or secret access is hilarious! :insane: What does anyone get out of this thread other than anyone participating.

Do you critics think it's FUN to be the OP and moderator of this thread? Where 10 people think something should go one way and another 10 think another way. Where EVERYONE has an idea of how the thread could be run better. Updating RAK offers. Maintaining the "hot seat" clock. Updating the link with current offers. What am I getting from this thread?

I made this thread only to keep things honest. When I see something that wreaks like BS, I'll call it what it is. I get that it's Comics General. Fine. But there are plenty of people that genuinely want to participate and do participate in this thread. There are lurkers that think about participating. So yeah, it pisses me off when someone says constantly how "brutal" this thread is and how bad I suck. Spread the word. Put it in your sig line while you're at it.

But it's just very frustrating when someone is in the "hot seat" and they don't care to change up their offer until they pull an FDQ moment and trash the thread and other trolls come out of the woodwork to bash it as well. If this thread died and we went back to PIF, I wouldn't be upset and can tell you at this point how much of a relief it would most likely be. (shrug)

So, yeah, sorry for singling you out.
