  1. great, more competition for the books I want Yeah, we don't need more competition. Go collect "Comic Cavalcade" or something. Seriously, congrats on a nice pickup and a nice start to an Action collection.
  2. Those misfit villians sure look pretty confident considering they're about 1 second away from getting BBQd by the Torch flying right at them.
  3. Awesome Action 59 Alton. You're right, judging the front cover it looks like a 6.0 to 6.5. Great example of a mid-grade with great eye appeal. Now, hurry up an upgrade this copy so I can snatch this one from you.
  4. I doubt that I'll win it with my low bid. But we'll see. The Tec #31 is quickly up to $3,200 with 14 days left in the auction. Still the high bidder?
  5. (1) Action Comics #13 (2) Action Comics #10 (3) Detective #29 (4) USA #7 (5) Action Comics #8 All of the above in low to mid grade.
  6. Thanks. Yeah, I don't think I've ever heard the story on why the "S" is missing. Anyone know?
  7. Here's my unrestored raw copy of Action #20. A tough book to find unrestored. I'll also post in the grading section to see what people think.
  8. Zatara covers have the best graphic design to the covers, in my *professional* opinion. If you're a fan of the #12 and #14 Zatara covers (and I sure am too!), then it means you're a fan of the artist Fred Guardineer. He drew both of those covers, and I wouldn't be surprised if he had some control over the coloring on those as well. IMO, he had one of the most elegant & distinctive styles of the early DC artists. His work on the interior Zatara stories is quite nice too, and even his lettering is easy to spot and much easier on the eyes than some of the cruder efforts elsewhere in the early Actions. Nice pickup on the #33, Matt! Guardineer's first Superman cover was Action #15. He does have a distinctive style, as #15 cetainly has a different feel to it than the earlier Supes covers. He did do some nice TEC covers as well.
  9. They had the #11 listed for $1,400 in Chicago too, but only came down to $1,200 for me I need to improve my negotiation skills. Actually, it was fairly easy for me to pass on it as it really isn't an issue I'm aggressively pursuing.
  10. You're right its hard to pick one, as the issues you mention are nice also. Just wondering, was the issue #11 you held from terryscomics and graded a 4.0? I ask because I considered buying that copy at Wizard World Chicago.
  11. Nice pickup. Pretty classic image of supes on the cover too! Definitely one of the better non-war covers.
  12. There's a killer copy of Detective #6 in there too. CGC Apparent 9.2 (moderate P). Yeah, I agree. Some of those restored copies look pretty sweet to me.
  13. don't worry, Durden's got that one as well, great #29 by the way Brian..and yes, there are great Action covers other than the war covers.. Yeah, there are many non war covers I like, especially the ones under issue 30. What do you think is the best non-superman cover? Personally I like issue #8 for the cool battle scene and nice colors. Probably one of the hardest issues in the run to find though.
  14. Actually, then I have the rare variant cgc error version
  15. Anyone notice the upcoming January Heritage auction preview? They have a run of Detective Comics from #27-41 (minus #34) ALL restored copies.
  16. Slow day at work so... more posting fun! Getting away from the war cover theme, here is my copy of Action #29.
  17. Your just trying to one-up my collection at this point aren't you! Awesome pickup Alton! I agree, that's one of the top Action war covers. As usual with your books, nice eye appeal for the grade too.
  18. What's the error? PM me with it if you don't want to give it away.. (Is this not the 5th Superman cover?) Shawn Sure I'll reveal it here. Action 17 is actually the 6th Superman cover. The previous five are: 1, 7, 10, 13, 15.
  19. thedude is correct! Good catch, you know your Actions. I have no proof, but I suspect Newt was in the cgc quality control dept the day my book was graded. Actually I've seen other #17s with the same error.
  20. I bought my #17 as a raw 2.5 and sure enough it graded out that way. I remember seeing a copy of Action 14 that had "Billy York" written on it as well. Can anyone find the "error" on the cgc label?
  21. Yeah, you do have some really nice books on your site Jay. Thanks for posting.
  22. Sticking to the war cover theme, here is my copy of Action 17. Not a great conditioned copy, however it's one of my personal favorites as it was my FIRST Golden Age Action purchase.
  23. Yeah, nearmint's Action 43 cgc 9.0 is one sweet book. Anyone see the Action 59 cgc "qualified" 8.0 on pedigree? Looks like a nice book, just a little too pricey. #59 is one of my favorite covers though and is high on my want list.
  24. Great pickup on the Action 66! Cool cover. Do you plan on picking any more up? I say the Supes #14 in the Heritage auction goes for about $2,300. The tough part about this auction is all the great stuff and to figure what book to really go after. There's probably 10 books I'd like, but can only afford to win one, maybe two. Too bad the auction end times aren't staggered so if you lose one you can still bid on another. Oh, and mattbird, if I ever upgrade my Action 17 or 20 I'll let you know. The 17 is a CGC 2.5. The 20 is ungraded buts gets my "professional" estimate of a 3.5
  25. exactly, now run out and get ya one.. There happens to be a Supes #14 cgc 6.5 in the January Heritage auction. Start saving now. And to answer the question posed, the Actions I currently have are: 15, 17, 20, 22, 27, 29, 30, 35, 43, 53. A couple could use an upgrade.
