That is not good news. Pneumonia in the elderly is a tough one, and I'm sure the stress of the last few weeks has not helped.

Wealthy celebrities have been bidding in auctions forever. We're just starting to find out about them now. There is an endless list of collectors out there and celebrities are humans and like all the same things we do. I'd be more worried about speculative investors who have no attachment to collectibles than celebrities who do.

I find it odd that people make a distinction. Many people don't realize that comics were printed in both Canada and the US. Canadian publishers would just ship their books to the US for distribution (and visa versa). Ditto for UK editions. They were all printed on the same presses. The only time you can tell a difference is if the price is different (or bar code, etc).

Looks like this movie is breaking all sorts of barriers culturally. My kids absolutely loved the movie. Even my son, who refuses to watch Star Trek, LOTR or Star Wars and didn't really love any other Marvel movies loved this one. Marvel aimed for a different audience and they knocked it out of the park.

UK copies have been picking up steam for some time now. Personally, I don't think there is a difference although I know many disagree.

For the most part, their grading makes sense to me. But then I've been studying it for 15 years. I suppose something like Astrophysics wouldn't make sense to me. How rare the book is irrelevant to the grade.

I believe that is a default setting by Heritage that you need to opt out of. Buyer may not even know it's on.

There is more factored into each grade than just chipping.

I saw the book raw and told Harley it would grade a 7.5 and didn't think it would grade an 8.0 as he expected. The dust shadow on that book was much darker than the one on the X-men #1 in Heritage. When it comes to dust shadows CGC takes into account the size of the shadow (width / length / surface area it covers), how dark it is and obviously what the rest of the book looks like (including how deep the shadow goes into the paper - for example, does it affect the inside cover?) It may or may not actually upgrade, but I have no doubt that someone out there is willing to try. I'm not always right but I trust my own skill and experience enough to trust myself to know what I'm talking about. I'm not sure where you're going with the conversation. Are you trying to say that this is a new X-men #1 prices in 8.5?

It all depends on how severe the defect is and what the rest of the book is like. No way to tell without knowing both. That is not 'severe'. I was picturing a book where the entire right edge of the cover was missing. That amount of chipping is about consistent with the grade given. There can be some subjectivity and variance but that book is definitely nicer than a 6.0 or 6.5 IMO. I didn't look at the book closely but it certainly didn't look 9.4 / 9.6 without the chipping.

Have to agree that music is a critical element to help put you in the seat and also help put you in the seat again as a repeat viewer in the theatre and eventually with Blu-Ray sales. How does it get you in the seats? Someone mentioned the Thor trailer. When I heard that music agains those visuals I got instant goose bumps and I knew i was seeing that movie. How does it get you back? We respond to emotional connections and music does that better than almost anything. Anyone who sat in a theatre as kid and watched Star Wars with John Williams score knew there was something spectacular happening with the combination of visuals and thrilling sounds. Star Wars redefined movie success with the amount of repeat customers seeing the movie 3 and 4 times not just once or twice. Great music sells products, movies, and even relationships. It's a powerful tool. So I'm not patently absurd and full of stupidity for suggesting that the musical score was going to help appeal to a wider audience? Nevermind, I knew the answer before I asked the question.
