  1. Yours my friend and hope you continue healing. Thanks for recognizing this for what it is. Tevis only wrote a few things, but they are so astute on human nature. Mockingbird is such a fantastic read, I thank @Pat Calhoun for reminding me a while back.
  2. It has never been established in any of the guides. However, your asking the question probably establishes it for posterity right here at CGC, since I had to go take pics of the copyright pages... The Brooklyn Bridge cover and the Zoot suit cover both have the exact same HRO on the back page, however, the BB cover only lists the 1948 copyright and the Zoot suit cover lists the 1948 & 1949 copyright, so it is likely the second cover. Also, of course, there was another Zoot suit cover with a word blurb I believe either the 1st or 2nd of the Zoot suit covers
  3. Ha ha... just learned that you can't say E R E C T I O N on these boards lol!
  4. Finally able to display the elusive "Reefer Club" digest, the 3rd usage of the famous "" cover that I recently acquired. The uncensored original Intimate Novels #32 is on the left. Intimate Novels #32 with the physical publishers censor sticker at the middle. Uber rare Stallion Books #213 on the right. I believe there was one other usage of the censored cover, on a digest magazine version. When I first started collecting vintage paperbacks, I was a bit of a Juvenile Delinquent, so naturally, the JD books fascinated me and is still one of my favorite genres to collect So much rare, cool, valuable stuff in that bucket
  5. I'm not going to have time to list anything tonight but take a look back and take 20% off any of the new books from page 12 through 19 AND any of the already reduced Recap books I have another stack to list tomorrow, then I'm going to close this thread out before it becomes too unwieldy and the unsold books will go to my Ebay store. I'll probably have another sale in a couple of weeks after I finish my sorting. The library is really starting to look nice!
  6. Last one for tonight. Thanks for the looks, likes & takes Feel free to make offers on unsold books. Savage Pellucidar by Edgar Rice Burroughs Ace G-739 August 1968 2nd edition of the 1st PB $8 SOLD to Norrin's Lawyer One of Frazetta's most iconic pb covers and the basis or equal to "Luana" and Vampirella #31. Has chips to the corners but otherwise smooth so not sure how to grade it. Just pricing it cheap and hope someone appreciates it. Very Good Minus Glossy. Square, tight and bright. Chips to the corners , light dust shadow to right edge. Pages and interior covers toned.
  7. The Beasts of Tarzan by Edgar Rice Burroughs Ace F-203 May 1963 1st print of the 1st US PB and the only Ace (and Frazetta) edition. $8 SOLD to mstrange Sweet Frank Frazetta Black Panther and Gorilla cover. Very Good. Glossy. Reader crease front and back with edgewear around the edges. Indent of "1916" on cover to the left of Tarzan's head that is very faint, hard to see, there is almost no ink in the indent. Tiny check mark on back cover and under "1916" on copyright page. Pages and interior cover have heavier toning.
  8. Valley Vixen by Ben Ames Williams Avon 153 1948 $8 Another pretty early GGA cover signed by "Strick" on the rim of her "neckline" if you could call it that, pioneer GGA cover artist Carl Stricker. Very Good Plus. Square and tight, uncreased, bright whites, has a dust shadow at the right edge.
  9. The Abortive Hussy by Jack Woodford Avon 146 1947 $10 SOLD to popkulture Early GGA cover signed by "Strick" at the base of her arm, pioneer GGA cover artist Carl Stricker. He did a bunch for Avon in the late 1940's Fine. Square and tight, uncreased, bright whites, has light remnants of a grease pencil near the spine.
  10. Love In The Latin Quarter by Henri Murger Avon 163 1948 $12 Another classic "Clinch pose" GGA cover. Not credited but I wouldn't be surprised if it was Barye Phillips. It looks a lot like his style on the Avon Digest 1st Edition of "Sinful Woman" by James M. Cain. Fine Plus
  11. Going to do a couple of "lightning round" Avons. Just one pic. They're great early GGA covers but not expensive and all are very solid square copies with minimal wear and no big surprises on the spines and backs for the grade. All in the VG to Fine Plus range. A Woman's Heart by Guy De Maupassant Avon 175 1948 $12 Classic "Clinch pose" GGA cover. Credited in the copyright office to Ann Cantor but likely a hired hand. Fine Plus
  12. The Mad King by Edgar Rice Burroughs Ace 51402 $12 SOLD to Norrin's Lawyer The first of the "Tall" Ace editions. A dynamic Frazetta cover. Fine Plus. Appears unread or very lightly read. Square solid spine has a hairline crease. Color chip to top spine. Has a few pressure creases on cover that barely photograph. Age toning to the pages and inner covers bring the grade down a bit. Structurally very pretty
  13. The Ice Cold Nude by Carter Brown Signet P3876 Fourth Printing with a different cover. 1969 $12 Great composition and colors on this Good Girl cover by Robert McGinnis. Fine. Very Glossy. Spine is solid with slight slant, light reader crease and a couple light thumb creases, mostly on the back. A very nice copy.
  14. Only The Very Rich by Carter Brown Signet P3842 First print. April 1969 $8 Sweet full length back shot, tailights cover by Robert McGinnis Very Good. Very Glossy. Spine is solid with slight slant, readers crease and various finger beds. Tiny chip to right corner. And some pen on the first page, but the whites are bright and it's a fantastic cover image priced accordingly.
  15. I found another copy of this bad girl so cut and paste is easy on the description About the same grade as the first one I listed. The Sad Eyed Seductress by Carter Brown Signet S2023 First print. November 1961 $15 SOLD to crassus Phenomenal "landscape-oriented" Good Girl with a cigarette cover art by Robert McGinnis, one of dozens he did for the Carter Brown series, where he really made his name as one of the greatest GGA artists of the 1960's - 70's (through today!) These are a bear to collect because there are so many variants and they are thin little Signets that get beat up so easily. Well worth the hunting though as there are many incredible nude and semi-nude covers. I've taken to buying any copies that don't have hard diagonal creases on the front (my pet peeve on GGA books) Near Fine. Very Glossy. Spine is solid with slight slant, a light crease to upper right and a couple color skips near the spine. Doesn't have the creasing the other one had and the color scrapes are unobtrusive to the as, previously mentioned, awesome image.
  16. No Angels For Me by William Ard, Popular Library #591 $25 Ard was a top noir writer in the 50's. A gorgeous GGA cover by Walter Popp I believe, from the time when Popular had painted covers on front and back. Fine/Fine Plus. Spine is solid and square. Covers are glossy, pages tight and supple. Light reader's crease and thumb crease. Minimal wear otherwise. A pretty copy of a skinny little book that is usually trashed.
  17. Gulf Coast Girl by Charles Williams Dell Books #898 1955 $12 SOLD to goldust40 I forgot to mention Charles Williams above, he was at least as good as Keene, MacDonald, Goodis and Brewer. This is not an original as he started getting picked up by the Hardcover publishers like MacDonald did. A really fast read and great if you love boats. Incredible dynamic GGA cover art by Robert Maguire. One of his best for Dell. Very Good Minus. This was my reader copy but the front cover is nice enough to display. Solid spine. Pages are tight. It has some chipping on the back and a wrinkle to the spine but well worth it for the front cover alone.
  18. Judge Me Not by John D. MacDonald, Gold Medal 186 1951 1st Edition PBO $25 MacDonald's 3rd novel for Gold Medal. He was probably their best selling author. GGA cover art by Barye Phillips, their most prolific cover artist. Fine Plus. Spine is square and tight, pages supple. Super glossy with great color. No creasing to the front cover, one small crease to the back bottom corner. Light edgewear/bindery chipping to the spine tips. Lamination fully intact. A very nice copy.
  19. Dead Yellow Women by Dashiell Hammett. Dell 308 Mapback 1949 $40 One of the most read/collected hard boiled authors with a haunting, classic cover known to all vintage PB collectors. I previously sold a low grade copy of this one but found that I have a much better second copy so offering it here. Very Good Plus/ Fine minus. Solid and tight, spine has slight slant. Light readers crease and some spine wear but the cover is very smooth and otherwise uncreased. A book I've never seen without some kind of reader crease. My keeper has one.
  20. The She-Wolf and Other Stories by Saki Bantam Books #143 dust jacket over a Superior Books #M656 paperback 1945 $60 An amazing copy . Bantam and other publishers in the late 1940's realized GGA sells and replaced plain, older covers by printing dust jackets with better art, in ths case by Bert Lannon, and wrapping the old editions with the dust wrappers. It's tough to find the dust jackets in nice condition. Fine Plus/Very Fine Minus. Super glossy and new looking d/j. The paperback itself is Fine Plus because of a thumb bend on the front cover that doesn't break color but the wrapper is spectacular. Blinding gloss, no creases and just slightly folded at the top edge. Not frayed. A touch of tiny edgewear here and there.
  21. Gold Medal's success with original novels sent all the other publishers scurrying to commission original works for print. The Brimstone Bed by Day Keene Avon T-459 1st Edition PBO 1960 $45 SOLD to goldust40 Famous nude water-nymph cover art is uncredited but irresistible. I've seen it credited to the amazing George Ziel but I'm not convinced and it is not on Lynn Munroe's Ziel checklist. Spectacular job by whoever did it. Very Fine Minus/Very Fine.Super glossy and new looking. Definitely unread. The spine has slight slant but is super sharp and unmarred. Near white pages, which is highly unusual. A killer copy of a classic cover and great author.
  22. Ok, going to get back rolling here with some great authors and GGA. If you're collecting vintage pb's you have to collect Gold Medals. They set the standard in the early 1950's for combining original hard boiled noir with great cover art. Gil Brewer is one of the best i've read, along with other Gold Medal regulars like Harry Whittington, Day Keene, David Goodis and John D. MacDonald, some of the most collected authors in vintage pb-land. 13 French Street by Gil Brewer, Gold Medal 211 1951 1st Edition PBO $25 Stunning headlights cover art by Dom Lupo. Petra Lawrence is one of the wickedest women ever created imho. Brewer was a master at creating twisted, tortured people in unfortunate situations. This was such a great read as well as great to look at. Fine/Fine Plus. Spine is square and tight, pages supple. Super glossy with great color. No creasing, just some edgewear/bindery chipping to the corners and spine tips. Lamination fully intact. A very collectible copy that can still be (carefully) read.
