My 9 year-old daughter's first superhero comics were the first five books of the collected New Teen Titans, where this cover was published on #1. So to her, this is the cover to the first comic she'll ever remember reading. She loves Perez and draws Titans all the time, trying to imitate his style. I'll get this professionally framed and put up on her wall next to her Perez Wonder Girl sketch and Sienkiewicz Raven.

Glad it went to the right home, then! and that Wonder Girl sketch is FANTASTIC!

  2. CLINK ENDS TONIGHT! PEREZ NEW TEEN TITANS COVER

    HELLO,

Just a heads up that I have a SWEET George Perez New Teen Titans cover that ends in Comiclink's latest auction tonight. It's the cover to the NTT Archive #1, and It was also used as the cover to the New Teen Titans Omnibus. It's a beautiful, iconic image of the Titans, penciled & inked by George.

Check it out, and bid away!

  3. Jim Lee Wonder Woman sketch Charity Auction

    Hi everyone,

I recently produced a video for SYFY where Jim Lee penciled and inked a Wonder Woman sketch for us. It's a thing of beauty -- and watching Jim at work is always a treat! We're auctioning the sketch off to benefit The Hero Initiative - 100% of the proceeds go to that great organization.

Here's the link to the story on SYFYWire, with a link to the auction and the video. Hope you enjoy, and hope you bid up the OA!

  4. and I'll echo several of the comments here. My favorite AE are:

    Kirby Thor

    the Romita Sr Spidey books

The Star Wars Artifacts Edition ...

as Silver Age (and early Bronze Age) OA keeps getting further and further from what I can afford to pay, these books are a great way to get an up-close look at those original pages. IDW does a great job with them.

  5. SNEAK PEEK AT IDW'S KIRBY FF ARTIST'S EDITION

    Happy Friday!

Apologies for the somewhat OT subject - but it is a book featuring scans of OA, so ....

Had the pleasure of talking with Scott Dunbier about the upcoming Twice Up Kirby Fantastic Four Artist's Edition for SYFYWire ... and got an advance look at some of the great pages in the book. That FF #65 pg 1 Splash -- YOWZA!

    Anyway, hope you all enjoy..

  6. I've bought several pieces of animation art and had them shipped safely flat, in between cardboard or masonite. Good point though by Cstojano about the warmer season being a potential concern.

Let us know what type of cels you have. I'm sure I'm not the only person here who collects animation cels.

  7. Very few art dealers there, but those that were there had GREAT STUFF. Sorry I didn't take pictures. Forgot because I was always rushing out of our production studio to sneak a few minutes at the art tables. Bechara and Saul had killer art on display. Lots of Kirby .... Somehow Bechara always manages to display fresh covers. Guy must have a RIDICULOUS inventory.

I worked out a deal with Saul for a really nice Bronze Age cover ... but until the transaction is complete and its in my hands, I'll keep quiet so as not to jinx it. :)

  8. A Unique Piece of Walt Simonson THOR OA

    Hi,

my daughters are obsessed with making videos -- or more specifically, having ME make videos to post on YouTube so they can watch. Because of my work, I do lots of stuff involving theme parks and toys, so they dig those kind of videos. Now they've started asking me to show off some of the art and toys I have in my 'fun room' ...

So here goes. One of my favorite and most interesting pieces in my meager collection is an FDNY helmet actually used on the job by NY's Bravest, with a custom drawing of THOR on it by none other than Walt Simonson. Walt did this for a charity auction benefiting the FDNY Foundation at the 2015 NY Comic Con. My good friend Frank is the press secretary for the FDNY and had asked me early on if he thought doing these custom helmets was a good idea. I of course, screamed YES! They wound up getting Walt, John Romita, Paolo Rivera & his dad + several other top artists to turn these helmets into special works of art. I was lucky enough to win this one ... which is probably the only Simonson THOR art I'll ever have :)

Hope you enjoy this video of the helmet ...  and here's a pic of the helmet..

    Fee-fi-fo-FOOM! Art Day

Posted two pieces in my CAF that I recently bought. First is a pencil prelim for the published (1985) The Royal Tomb plate 3 from Ghita The Sword of Eros by Frank Thorne. The published image was inked on a separate page. Really nice example of Frank’s pencils from his prime period.

The other piece of art is Foom #14 cover pencils by Big John Buscema and inked by Tom Palmer. Only Marvel published artwork featuring Red Sonja that Tom Palmer ever did and one of only two covers Tom inked over John featuring Conan. I rare example, plus its my first cover by them.

  10. oh man, this thread is bringing up all sorts of OA regrets

There's the time I had a chance to buy one of my favorite Alex Ross pieces - the Super Friends painted cover (homage to Alex Roth's classic image); Rene Dorenbos (sp?) offered it to me over a decade ago for like $5K ... I just couldn't come up with the cash right away and was too inexperienced to ask about time payments. Completely regret letting that one slip through my fingers, because I believe the person who owns it now is off the grid and not even a collector.

There's also the eBay auction around 2005, I think, when Bob Larkin's painted cover to the Marvel Super Special Empire Strikes Back was up for sale. It had a BIN of $3K ..and I hesitated. an hour later, it was gone. ARGH.

BUT, my biggest regret is probably passing up the chance to buy the cover art to the Absolute HUSH edition -- when I first met Jim Lee (he was a guest on the NBC show I was producing at the time) -- we talked some OA and I asked about what Hush art was left. He said he had just put up an unpublished image on Albert's site, and that if I was smart, I would grab it then, because he fully expected DC to use it on the next collection. It was listed for $5K I believe. I hemmed and hawed, and then it was sold .... le sigh. I stare at this one often on CAF in Han Park's gallery...

Nah.  I don't know anybody who would insist on a 2016-17 era cover just to have a FM cover from a franchise launched in 1986.  If they wanted a single-image piece, there has been at least one true splash from DKR that has sold for less than that, some splash-y interiors as well, plus single-images from DK2, the 10th Anniversary Edition and the Absolute DKR edition from 2006.

The possibilities are limitless!  Though, if I had to speculate on the buyer, my short list would include: (1) The Impossible Collection guy (Hariri), (2) Metro/CC themselves, (3) Jim Lee (he was at the show w/Frank), (4) the other guys who rep Frank (showing Frank they can deliver buyers and that they should stick with them), (5) Michael Uslan.

David Mandel (the DKR #3 splash buyer) has denied any involvement in this sale on Facebook.

This is total, rank speculation on my part!

Not sure of the other possibilities, but I know Jim didn't buy it.

  13. WOW. Those are GORGEOUS. Thanks for sharing ..

This spring I'm working with Tim Lapetino to promote his Art of Atari book. What we have planned is a small display of the original artwork at his book signing. Most of my artwork is not framed so this is a first for me. A bit more expensive than I was expecting.

Here are a few pictures that I took at the frame shop before I left. The events will be in the Chicago area. As we have confirmation I'll post the places and times in case this interests anyone here.

Edit --- The pictures are showing up way too big when I try to post them on this forum.

Here is a link to a Videogame forum where the pictures are normal sized.

  14. First, Brian & Bill, thanks for doing this. Always a lot of fun to see everyone's great art finds in one place.

Second, I WON! - or, my Flash/Superman race homage by Darwyn Cooke did, for Best Commission piece. I'm happy other people like the piece as much as I do.

Thanks to everyone who participated, really fun to see so many great pieces. Congratulations to all!!!!!!!
