Skottie's lower prices on his site for this first offering prompted some chatter on FB, too. Here was my reply to that as it applies here, too:

Thanks to Annabel for pointing me to these threads.

First off, I want to congratulate Skottie on a successful sale! I will always consider him a friend and will continue to root for his well-deserved success.

Regarding pricing when I helped him sell his art and now: It's always been largely determined by Skottie. Skottie is very aware of his own value, and of the value of his art. Prior to working with me, Skottie sold a lot of covers via eBay; auctions aren't necessarily a perfect reflection of market value, but they're close. Spidey covers, for example, were routinely in the $5K range. He was not going to get any less selling them through me. Same with sketches. Having sold them through his site for years before, he knew exactly what he should get for them on my site and priced them all. Indeed, between covers, pages, sketches, we sold 90%+ of the art I handled. I would say the market felt the pricing was fair.

The covers that were dropped today were all new. I did not have them on my site before. Looking at the prices, they were less than what we would have had on my site. Why? No idea. But I would not expect them to be this low forever. For today, I think collectors should just be glad they got great deals!

So in addition to Skottie, I would say congrats to buyers, as well. Always a happy day when we get new art!

Well said from a class act!

  2. Hi folks,

I'm working on a video feature on Kirby's Fourth World and I wanted to include a few scans of OA from those books. I'm looking for a couple of nice splashes and/or panel pages from any of the 3 main titles - New Gods, Forever People, Mister Miracle. If any Kirby collectors would like to provide a scan of their art, it would be greatly appreciated. we'll also credit you .

DM me if you can assist. Thanks!

Some of the commission snark on this thread is pretty gross.  You guys are true buzz kills.  To the consigners, congrats and I know it was about the art and the experience, and not just the writing of a check.  This is a great, fun hobby.  How about we all try and remember that.

1000% THIS. I'll never understand why some people feel the need to all over someone for their artistic preferences. It's nobody's $ but the buyer's. If he's happy with the commissioned piece -- and every single one who posted a Jim Lee commission in this thread sure seemed thrilled -- why throw a wet blanket on it? SMH

  4. I rarely get commissions, but decided to get one from Ron Frenz. I had him recreate a classic John Romita Captain America image, and it turned out GREAT! Ron penciled, inked and colored the piece + added the lettering. It's gorgeous. Fair pricing and incredibly fast turnaround. I also want to tip my cap to Scott Kress from Catskill Comics for a great job of keeping me informed every step of the way. Very glad I ordered this, and will definitely ask for another Frenz piece in the future!

    Hey OP...that was awesome! But...

Do those collection rooms have a slight negative vacuum effect going on? (Like a 'clean' room would?) Because otherwise, my first thought actually was: nightmare for dust control!

Thanks!  I hadn't thought about the dust issue ... I can tell you it was immaculate. But given how John took great pains to lay out the room a certain way, I'd wager he's not one to slack on keeping the place ultra-tidy

    Hi all,
I normally don't make a big deal out of my purchases but thought I'd share it with you all since it was a grail piece for me. One I never thought I'd actually own. I've been sitting on this piece for some weeks now and have debated showing for reasons often talked about on the boards before but figured it's better to show what you own than hiding it away wondering if it even exists. I also want to give my thanks to boardies who helped and gave me advice during the purchase. You know who you are and what piece it is.

For those who don't, it's a grail I never thought I would actually ever own. The title splash page to the first ever issue of ROM Spaceknight!

The artwork itself is actually 3 different pages. The original art which was drawn by Sal Buscema, with another page he did being nothing but the three panels that depict ROM crashing to Earth in the published image. Both those pieces had their images taken and were turned into stats which were used to make a stat only third page which was used as the published image. All of which you can see below.

The best cover by far is the #18.  Cockrum is the superior artist.  The book is a key issue and the cover is a “classic” (via Overstreet).  No one cares about the vellum anymore.  10 years ago, the vellum would have made a huge difference.  Not now.  I have seen too many pieces sell for top dollar that were vellum.  I can’t remember the last time that a piece of art sold cheaply because of vellum.  A Cockrum Ms Marvel panel page is $3-3.5k now.  I say that equals $35k on this cover.  Could go higher.

The next best cover is the #19.  JRJR is the second best artist here.  The cover has Capt Marvel as well as Ms Marvel.  It is the next best image.  Again, a quality Ms Marvel page is $2-2.5k.  $25k.

The least desirable is the Hannigan.  Anyone who says that Hannigan is a more desirable artist than Cockrum either has a personal vestment or is trying to mislead you.  There Is no decent Ms Marvel page under $1500.  I say $15-18k on this one.

i am normally low in my estimations.  I hardly ever win any covers.  And I always bid what I think is FMV.  So, expect these prices plus maybe 20% for the auction burst.  The HA will set new records and the Comiclink cover will follow.

i am one of the biggest Ms Marvel collectors out there.  So, I feel like I have a very good handle on the market.

    Allen

Has the Cockrum cover been restored? I remember seeing it years ago and it seemed to have had more yellowing. Maybe I'm wrong. Also, I think you're dead right on the rankings, Allen.

  8. Hi folks,

unloading some art and wanted to let the forum know. I have a sweet page from Dazzler #6 by the two Franks, Springer & McLaughlin, up for auction on eBay. It's the final page in the issue and features a great splashy panel with Dazz & Hulk facing off. Link to Auction HERE.

Also, reluctantly parting with my ROM, THE SPACEKNIGHT page from issue #14. This is page 17, by Sal B. and has Rom in several panels, as well as Jack of Hearts. A cool early page from ROM.

    PRICE - $950

I was lucky enough to make an ultra mega original art haul yesterday, well for me its a mega!!  It took me a little detective work to find out what was what on this piece, but thankfully it worked out in the end.  So what is it???  My new Jim Lee Preview Exclusive Icons book cover!!!

So what made it such a chore to research.  Well, first theres the pencil version that Jim did.  This is the one that Scott Williams inked over.  Then there is a Jim Lee/Richard Friend Print.  If you look, Friend dated it 2013.  I was concerned when I was offered the Williams one, I wasnt sure which was which nor what was going on.  So I contacted Jim Lee, Scott Williams, Richard Friend and Albert Moy to get to the bottom of this.  Unfortunately Jim did not respond, which is ok, I'm sure Jim gets tons of emails and messages a day and its impossible to get to everyone and to miss things.  But however, Scott, Richard and Albert did get back with me.

Scott inked the original pencils.  A few years later, someone contacted Richard on CAF to have a copy inked.  Richard cant remember if it was a blue line copy or just a computer grey pencil copy that he inked over.  Then Richard made prints to sell of his piece.    So, there is a commissioned "copy", I guess you could say "Recreation" cover out there.

Anyway, I am very happy to be able to add this piece to my collection as I transition from comics to more high end OA, well atleast for me this was high end.  I had to sell an Amazing Fantasy 15 and trade a McFarlane Spider-Man page along with some cash for it!!

The one I bought is the original Lee pencil with Scotts inks, NOT the copy with Richards inks.

For a look at some of the key offerings in the auction by artist as well as the video content, please check out this blog:

    https://propstore.com/blog/top-10-greatest-comic-book-artists/

What do people think of the videos?  Worth doing again in the future?

very good idea. I would show more of the products up for auction, and do it earlier. Your audience for the videos is potential bidders, so you want to show them as many of the items they may be interested in as possible.  let the conversation/interview serve as the V/O narrative bed.

    Just my two cents

Judging from the absurdly fake other items for sale, hedging language and a price tag at a fraction of true FMV...fake fake fake fake fake.

I know guys who would pay stupid money for the real deal...probably 10x the BIN price for this fraud.

Agree. I know a couple of collectors (who also check eBay regularly) that are ready, willing and able to cut a big check for that original.  Everything about that seller seems sketchy
