  1. I believe so, which means you’re halfway there! It would be a cool run to complete.
  2. Despite some gusty winds, yesterday was one of those autumn days that seemed to whisper “don’t waste me.” Heeding the call, I hopped on my motorcycle and cranked out a few hundred miles of trekking western Illinois roadways, culminating with a stop at my favorite fried chicken haunt of all. Needless to say, even with space limited to my saddlebags, I can’t resist stopping at a few antique malls and stores along the way. While yesterday’s findings included no comics, the I Love Lucy 3-D book was printed by one of the larger producers of 3-D comics, and the Deputy Dawg game will probably ring familiar with a few old timers from the golden era of TV cartoons. The detective mag has some really great picto-fiction stories, and those 1950’s Cosmopolitan magazines have truly forgettable covers but really great interior illustrations.
  3. Short-lived title with Hitler cameo on the cover. This issue has seen increases in the past year or so, like most Martin Goodman pulps. Should trade just about even-up with a Ms. Marvel 1 in 6.0 - or better.
  4. I love this sort of analysis! Keep it coming!!
  5. I've found a few over the years mixed in with movie magazines from the same era. They do fall more under the pulp umbrella, and coincidentally, both the long-running Argosy and Detective Fiction Weekly ran in that same format during the war and under that same Red Star imprint. They turn up on the Bay and often sneak under the radar. I think they're great pieces of Western Americana!
  6. He's alerting a fellow Boardie about a book he believes the user may be interested in.
  7. I always try to assign my grade before reading any of the other opinions, but it's noteworthy how often this subjective exercise converges to a tight range of grades - for me, 6.5 also. Better than my copy, as I never got around to upgrading it, so kudos!!
  8. Nice pick-up! Such an outstanding cover in that part of the run. Very under-rated.
  9. Wow, Rick, I thought when you showed me this stack that they were books you already had. I didn't realize you had just picked them up at the show! That was some productive time away from the booth, my friend. Congrats!!
  10. Hmmm... it's a little intimidating posting these after seeing full runs of Marvel Mystery and Planet just a few posts above, but I think they look purdy enough in their own right. These were recent pick-ups from the Windy City Pulp and Paperback Show, which has a little something for every budget, including cheapies like me:
  11. Totally sweet pick-ups indeed - the paperbacks too, but especially your piece of original art. It was great chatting with you and putting a face to the nick. You're not half as menacing in person as your surly Doc icon!
  12. Yeah, it did not suck. I had a blast stacking paperbacks. Many of them would probably fly under-the-radar for some paperback collectors, but I get a kick out of those glossy Bantam westerns with clean, clean spines and those oddball early Pocket Books first printings. At a show like this, you're unlikely to pull a Campus Town out of the $3 flats, but if you're willing to dig a little, you'll find plenty of great books that would take a mind-numbingly long time to pick off the 'Bay a few at a time. It's much better to do it in one fell swoop like this.
  13. Kudos to you as well, Rick! Man, I had a blast hastily making fat stacks of your paperbacks. I filled in some nice holes and scored several dozen upgrades as well, all on the cheap, just the way I like. I even found a few "Jim Clark" books in the comic boxes. This is always my favorite show of the year, and this one was no exception. Big kudos to Doug, John and all the staff, dealers and fellow collectors who make it happen!!
  14. I went to the pulp show but mostly bought comics and paperbacks. I was able to fill in a lot of holes in my Ace, Bantam and even Popular paperback runs. I also picked up some girlie mags as well as some nice Miss Fury Sunday strips. I got to chat with a few Boardies as well as other collectors and dealers, most of whom I haven’t seen since 2019. Regarding comics, there was plenty of stuff in the $5 to 15 range that hits on all cylinders for me:
