  1. Congratulations, Peter. What an awesome book!!!
  2. I agree. Collectors REALLY hate trimmed books (perhaps more than anything, besides brittle pages).
  3. Cap 1 - $35,000 Cap 3 - $31,060 Congratulations to the winners!
  4. Congratulations. That is a really nice looking book.
  5. I did place a number of bids before boarding the plane, however, I was concerned about dropping "hefty" bids on every lot I was bidding on, just in case I ended up "winning" a number of them. I wanted to win 1 or 2 books, not everything (that would be nice, but $$$$$).
  6. I wonder if they had someone on the phone who was "debating" it and so they extended it.. Just a thought.
  7. I am beginning to think "all roads lead to the Gator"!
  8. I guess if she "can't" figure it out, it will leave more cash on hand for the other 4 days of bidding. Trying to look on the positive side.
  9. Well, it looks like I will be stuck on a plane during this entire first day of auction closings. I am hoping my wife can figure out how to bid and maybe win me something.
  10. Thank you, sir. Last year I came very close to obtaining a low grade, but "affordable" copy, however the seller then decided to sell to one of his regular customers instead. I took that as a sign that perhaps the complete Action run was not in my cards. A tough pill to swallow, however, in the end I have to remember that comics are just possessions and not where real happiness is found.
  11. Any guesses on how many pages this thread will have BEFORE the first lot closes?
  12. Years ago, as I was putting together my run of Action Comics, a guy said to me, "People who buy a complete run of Actions, buy Action 1 as their first book or the last book." (paraphrased). I thought, this guy has no clue what he is talking about. I went on collecting, many times turning down #1s that came across my path (that I could afford), as I continued to fill out my collection. THIS WAS A COSTLY MISTAKE. Perhaps the old guy was right. I eventually put together the entire run from #2 on up (yes every one of them) and yet still I do not have a #1 (and regrettably I doubt I ever will, as the investor money has flooded the game and made such key books equal to owning a home). I would recommend two things. Going for the keys first and buying the best you can afford (unless you just want to read them and have no interest in their value moving forward). Maybe I am off base here, however, those are my thoughts, for what it is worth.
  13. Are you going to have a sales thread the night of the auction in order to increase your bids???
  14. This is kind of how I am viewing this as well. One nice book to tuck away would be just fine.
  15. I agree people will bid either way. I just think people may tend to bid more and maybe even more often if they had a catalog sitting there tempting them each day. I used to get lots of such catalogs and I remember winning lots of auctions. Just my opinion
  16. So YOU are the ONE that took that T5. Nice pick up! I wanted that book.
  17. Comic collectors tend (almost by definition) to be people who like to hold paper in their hands. I have barely looked at this auction on line, but if that catalogue was sitting here, I bet I would be flipping through it every day. This is NOT to say that I have not looked at the auction (I think I have looked at the books from A - D so far), or that I will not bid, but I am betting I will not be bidding on as many books (and maybe not as much) as I would be if I was flipping through a catalogue every day and being tempted. Perhaps I should thank CC for NOT sending me one. I am sure my wife is grateful to them.
  18. I am curious as to what "qualifies" one to receive a catalogue; I did not receive one. Now, I will readily admit that I did not spend as much on CC last year as I have in the past. I made a lot of purchases last year, however, not too many of them were from CC. This was NOT, however, for lack of trying. Although I did not end up with a lot of "wins", I did end up with some. More importantly, I was "in the game"; bidding. I remember bidding in the 5 figure range on at least one book. On a few books I remember going back and forth with another motivated bidder for some time after the "close" (several time extensions). All this bidding raised the final "hammer price" and CC benefited from me being "in the game" regardless of how many times I "won" or how many times I was "runner up". If I was Berk (or any other "seller") I would want serious bidders receiving catalogues even if they did not "win" a lot in the previous year. As for me, the catalogue is not a big deal to me and I would likely have given it to another board member after the auction anyway, however, this lack of "serious bidders" receiving catalogues, causes me to think CC is NOT the place I would want to consign my books to, IF ever I decided to sell (not that I am planning to do that, however, my children are likely to and it may be best for me to direct them to one of the other venues for selling).
  19. Yes! Can't tell you the number of times I have watched "To Have and To Have Not".
  20. Well then, following in Sqeggs' "Rebel Without a Cause" attitude, I would like to offer the following. If I had to pick just one GA to hold onto, it would likely be either my Action 2 (as it is one of my all time favorite GA covers and the second appearance of the man himself) or maybe my B&W "If the Devil Would Talk" (as I wanted a copy for many years and finally found one - thanks to a board member). I think I have posted pictures of both those books before, however, to be honest, the ONE book I would likely keep at the expense of losing ALL my other books is THIS copy of this book (not previously posted). It is December 1958, and thus well outside the GA, however, I treasure this more than any of my GA.
  21. Thanks for giving this thread a much needed I appreciate your thoughts and insights on this.
