Great find RM, and very cool stuff from your friend. Hope he does join up; if RM is dreaming about what he just saw on his visit , that must be one helluva collection :tink:

It is, oh it is. I was so hung up on the art, I hardly noticed the rest. He would hand me a stack of stuff and I could barely focus on it.

@Robot Man I was told that, at the time that I submitted these, the Salida collection was so new at that the store stamps weren't recognized.  I'm sure that if I were to resubmit them they would be properly noted and I think they might bump up a bit in grade, but why waste the money or a resub?

I see your point. None of mine are even slabbed at all. Just looked like they missed them. The markings are well known if you decided ever to sell them. Kind of odd that they noted the one with out the "Cookies" stamp.

Odd, how CGC got #72 labeled as a Salida but completely missed #80 and 83. They are very clearly identified. Makes me wonder how good they are at identififying Pedigrees... West would have never missed this.  Who is in charge of that process now?

  4. OK, guys, I've officially died and gone to the great comic book museum in the sky...

I had the great honor of seeing stuff that literally burned the retinas of my eyes.

I went over to a good friend house today to help him with a project he is working on. While there, I got to see one of the best collections I have ever seen. I told him about the boards and we looked at it. I suggested that he sign up and come here for some help. Hopefully, he will. I'm sure if he does, he will be given the warm board welcome that I got. He is also an "old timer" that has gotten to do things in collecting we can only dream about. We need more people like this. I might add, a real "true collector" with an intense love of the medium. And he is also one of the most modest collectors I can think of.

I asked him if I could take a few photos to share here and he kindly said OK. I won't out of respect, show you any more. I will let him do that if he choses.

First up, for guys like Rick and me who love Albert B Feldstein, I give you this. This was Feldstein's pencil study of a book that was sadly never published. Bill squelched it. How cool would this series have been?

I love the SA stories-but then I grew up with them.  GA stories bore me to tears but the covers are magnificent.

I can understand that. I also grew up in the SA. Most superhero stuff bores me now. Even the movies. Maybe I've just read too much of it. I will say that I never get tired of reading ECs or Carl Barks Ducks. A rare case where the stories and art converge for a wonderful experience.

I just feel bad for the guys getting into the hobby having to pay so much for what used to be such a cheap hobby to begin with. I collected comic books and records from an early age. Just to read and play. At a later stage of my life I quit buying comics and concentrated heavily on records. 5 years ago I got back into comic books after finding out that some of my books have gained tremendous value (among other reasons). None of my records did. Not even one.

I bought records for the music. At one time I started seriously collecting them. Most have not gone up much in value. Except the early blues and hillbilly 78's. Some of those bring nosebleed prices. Many are nearly one of a kind. People that collect those are VERY passionate and weird collectors. A great read that I highly recommend is "Not for sale at any price" available on Amazon cheap. A fascinating and great read. Not a long book but full of stories and info. These collectors are off the hook as to what the did to get rare 78's. Check it out!

  7. .5 books are not always incomplete. Sometimes just trashed or brittle. Keep in mind, poor is poor period. Don't expect much. If in doubt, don't buy it. Metro has a vast inventory and makes mistakes like everyone else. They do stand behind their stuff though. They are usually too pricey for me. I usually expect a half a grade lower and if it's spot on or a little better, I'm happy. Good luck!

Hey @Robot Man The show was fun!. I saw about 15/18 comic dealers. Mostly Modern/Bronze/Silver as usual .not much vintage golden age sadly :( . I saw Angelo's comics, Brad (Fine Very Fine comics) Phil, Jay and few other vendors. I got 3 golden age from a dealer who just recently got a planet comics #22, crime reporter #3 and hedy and got a good deal on them. You might have a better shot for golden age/vintage comics at Long Beach comic next Friday. I will be there also.

Cool, sounds like you made out! They didn't post a dealer list and long drive so I skipped it.

LB next week sounds like a bust. Labor Day and same time as the SF con. Real bad timing. Also very few dealers with vintage stuff. Terry and Harley are going up north. Probably same couple of dealers you just saw plus Ed Robertson who has very little GA. That and $45. At the door. Probably going to pass unless I can get someone to get me in for an hour or so. Too bad, because I always look forward to this show.

Way back in 1985 my dad and I went to my first comic book convention in Atlanta. That year I feel in love with Flash Comics, especially the ones with Hawkman covers. I've always wanted a decent copy of #2, the first Hawkman cover and this week the opportunity finally presented itself. 1985 Me is very happy right now:

Very cool and scarce I think. Don't remember ever seeing a copy.
