  1. Everything about it is vintage and of the era. Usually, the printing on most Canada issues I have seen is a bit sub par. I tend to go with the printer or publisher senario. Although I don't know why. "In the bag" you would never know and it would burn your retinas. For the right price, I love oddball stuff like this and the price was very right. I kind of got the feeling the seller who had mostly newer stuff wanted it gone. I was happy to oblige...

I had a great time at the con! Posted up a bunch of pics from the Comic Book Swap party that I hosted here:

We had 23 people show up, lots of great comics and tons of fun trading and swapping, and getting to meet other Bay Area collectors. This also gave me a great "comic fix" since there weren't too many dealers at the con itself, although I did pick up a lot of great stuff from the Bunky Bros.

Great idea. I might have just skipped the con and went there...

Jeeze, whatta haul! Sure beats my Long Beach haul. Bet the Bunkys were glad they made the trip up north!

Is there a thread about the lost comics collections in the flooding?  I'm not making light of the loss of property, but I'm sure there are some members that may have substantial collections that are now under water.  Some of those collections and special books might include very rare items (like pedigrees) that can't be replaced.  Some might have books or collections are are more valuable than their homes?  Do we have a list started of the great losses of this disaster?  What about Original Art?

I saw the title of this thread and my mind went to the obvious. Then I read it. Really??? This is serious. There was a major loss of LIFE here.  Who cares about comics at a time like this? You want to pester some one who might of lost everything for a list of comic books lost in a flood? Why would you even suggest such a thing much the less start a thread about it? Sorry for the rant, but low blow...

  5. What did those of you who attended think of the show? How did you do Ed? Good to see you and buy some of your wonderful books!

I posted a report over in the GA section in my "Son of 50 year Junk Obsession" thread with some observations and a few pictures.

Here's a clip from the local newspaper that my wife sent me.

  6. Thanks for the report!

Man, what a racket... $30. for the books pictured then the cost of the signature, grading fees and handling ect. How much was just a pre-signed book? I love Stan and guess I don't blame him. But, he can't need the money that bad. Just seems like a lap dance...

  7. The Felix books I got from Venezuela came FedEx ground at no cost to me. $20. for two 1930's Felix books was a steal. Hardly seems worth their while to steal $10 or 20 bucks. Also hardly seems worth it to even list them after Ebay's cut and shipping. I took the risk and am a happy cat! Good luck!

  8. It's always been an OK con. Great location and venue. Close to LA and OC. Usually light on comic dealers but I always find stuff. Once in a while some decent guests. It's close by and I don't have to pay to get in so I keep going. It is usually end of Sept. This one creeped up on me being labor day weekend. Only a couple vintage comic dealers but I got a pass and went anyway.

The Sat admission went from around $25. last time to $45. this time (+$15. parking). This is off the hook steep for this show. I did notice a LOT more security including many metal detectors to get in. I figured this might be one of the reasons for the high price. There seemed to be quite a few people willing to pay though as the line was pretty long in the AM.

I rarely go to the Feb show because it is so close to Terry's show and I figure I've seen all the dealers and they are probably picked pretty clean after Terry's so I don't know how that one is.

I hope this one did OK for the promoter. I would hate to see it go away. The area needs shows like this. The SF show sounds very similar. Too far to go though if it is like this. Looking forward to Terry's show in a few months!

It looks like I might have been one of the few GA buyers there. Other than David Arnold who I didn't see and seems to have picked up everything I left to list on the bay.    Hope Ed, Brad and the rest of the dealers did OK.

A little video my wife sent me from the local newspaper...

Recently came across a large Underground comic collection (150 books) that I'm picking up. Has some first prints like Mr Natural 1 and Zap 0 in decent shape, some Clay Wilson portfolio books, Young Lust, some books I've never seen before. An adult digest size Archie book which is really crazy. Great artwork, crazy subject matter.

Cool find! I came across a similar UG collection at the Alameda Flea Market about 10 years ago. Was a fun find!

You might be right. Funny that there is pretty much nothing on the net of him currently. Anybody know Maggie Thompson? She would probably know. Anybody know why Gary Carter dropped out of fandom? He was huge in the day. I thought I heard he was teaching.

  11. Thanks for the report!

Sounds similar to the Long Beach show. Odd the Bunkys went up north. Good for you guys though. Harley was actually in Canada.  Almost a mirror image down south. Check my "Son of 50 year junk obsession"over in GA for my LB report.

  12. Man, that's beyond scary. You did the right thing giving up the books and leaving the kid alone. El Monte has some gang activity. I live in the LA area and will pass the word. When did this happen? They might have been shopped around at the Long Beach con this weekend. Just another reason I don't transact on Craig's List. Hopefully, you got the license number. Glad you are safe!

Are there two sets of staples on the interior, but only one going through the cover? If so, that might be a hand assembled copy from the end of the print run. Marvel used to do that, match unused covers and unused interiors by hand...stuff that had gotten missed during the initial run. Maybe they ran off a few fronts with the rest blank to match with interiors that made it through without covers.

That's exactly what this looks like. No staple holes in cover that match up with the interior. There is one at the top that holds the cover to the book. None of this looks like something a buyer would do. I wonder what CGC would grade this at?

What are the adds on the back cover?,is anything like postmaster info ect under the splash page?

All the covers are blank except for the outside front cover. Here is the inside front cover first, the inside back cover second and the black cover third.

  15. You just might luck out. I just recently got two French 1930's Felix books from a venezuela seller for $10 each and free postage! 10 feed backs even.  A couple weeks later they arrived safe and sound. I figured with PayPal protection and only $20 total for both it was worth the risk. Glad I took the chance.

BLANK?  I'd be worried its a photocopy.  There are certainly a lot of St John printing errors though.  I just handed 14 Bakers to CGC this weekend at the SF ComicCon.  A True Love Pictorial 9 in the bunch has such a bad right edge mis-cut....

No, it is definitely not a photo copy. I checked it out well. It's also the right kind of gloss. The paper has also aged accordingly. Nice printing quality not like the usual Canada copies. Just never seen anything like it. Anybody ever see anything like this?

Nice report, thanks.  Congrats on getting that Diary Secrets.  To be honest, as a ST fan, I would have been tempted by $300 to meet Shatner, a couple sigs and photo op.  Was CGC there?  I like their certified photos.

Yeah, both CGC and "the other guys" we're both there.

I don't know. $300 for Shatner seems pretty stiff. He doesn't seem to really care about his fans. He's only there because of the money. And, a LOT of money. Not much different than a pole dance...

  18. Bonus show report...

Yesterday I went to one of my favorite monthly flea markets. Always, find some good stuff there. I missed a small stack of '50's comics that came out later. Mostly Disney ect but my buddy got a pretty nice Atomic War #1 and 2 as well as some decent Atlas War for a few bucks each. Damn, pays not to leave early.

It was hot and very humid. I got there at 5:30 AM when the trucks go in and it was 88 degrees. It is for the most part in a 3 floor parking garage. So between the heat, the humidity and the car fumes, it was pretty unbearable. I saw a couple of older folks about pass out. When I left a couple hours later it was 98 degrees!

Again, holiday weekend so it was pretty dealer light. The day, the heat and the fact there are two huge wildfires burning in the local mountains kept most people away. I was very happy though. I got a small group of VERY nice turn of the century colorful and graphic advertising tins which fly off the table for good money when I do shows, a mint and un-used Hopalong Cassidy paint book for 5 bucks and this wonderful 1920's very large pressed steel Turner roadster toy car. Just NEVER see these anymore out in the wild. Total about $125. for everything. Was home by 9:00.

  19. All in all, it was OK I guess. I saw hardly any local boardies. Probably figured it would be a bust and it kind of was. I was through buying in about an hour and spent another hour or so just people watching or jawing with a few guys.

I spoke to the promoter, a very nice lady, about the show. Voiced how I felt about the timing, lack of dealers and comic book guests and the crazy admission price. She seemed very interested in the feedback. This show had always been a lot better for about 1/2 the admission price. Hopefully this show is not a sign of things to come.

Still a good way to keep cool and kill a little of my time.

Any other boardies go? What were your thoughts?
