  1. Next stop was my pal Brad Sloan. Brad had been buying and selling on consignment a very nice collection of atomic age books for some time now. He always has something cool for me. He does a lot of local shows and the good stuff goes fast but I managed to fill in a couple of holes. Another guy who is great to deal with!

I had to comment that I don't usually buy F-VF books but I would look at his stuff anyway.:baiting:

  2. First stop was Ed Robertson. A great guy to deal with. He always has just a couple of boxes of GA at half price or less. I grabbed a nice small pile of mostly pre-code horror books. Not the real good titles which I have already but stuff like Advs into the Unknown, Forbidden Worlds, Black Magic, Avon, Kirby Monster books and others that I have always passed on due to their usual lack of gore! I will pick them up cheap though as readers. Nothing earth shaking but some fun stuff. He had a couple of nice Planets but someone beat me to the one I needed... I hope he did OK and I appreciate him making that long drive out here. Here's a couple of the cooler ones. The Detective is usually not something I buy but I had never seen a grey tone Detective and it was priced soooo cheap.

  3. Small con report...

I wasn't even going to go to this one. Labor Day weekend, very few GA dealers, $60. for admission and parking ect. It was also running the same time as the San Francisco con which also looked light on GA dealers. I figured it would be a bust (and I wasn't far off the mark). But, I got a chance to get early with an exhibitor pass and it's in my back yard so what the heck. Plus it was VERY hot and humid in LA and getting into a large air conditioned building didn't sound like a bad idea.

This is a smaller non-comic book "comic con" anyway. It has been OK in the past. Several of the better GA dealers were noticably absent, Terry, Harley and a couple of others. Even that snake "Angelo the Liquidator" was missing. Ed Robertson and Brad Sloan were there and there is always "that guy" at shows like this. (More about that later). There were some of the usual small crappy mostly SA-Modern guys with the same well thumbed boxes of junk.

The "big guest" was Capt. Kirk. For a mere $300 or so, you got admission for both days and a meet and greet with the good Capt. An item or two signed and a "photo op". Maybe a big deal for treckies but of no interest to me even for free. Howard Chaykin was there for a fee and a few modern artists who I don't even know. Hey, it was even light on cosplay girls...

    Nice grouping, Bob.

As far as completing the set, does that include the bound volumes you have or are we talking individual issues (just curious)?

I'm not trying to get every issue of Wings. Just the ones I like the most. Maybe 35-40 issues. My favorite are the Lubbers GGA art ones. I don't really consider the #1-12 bound volume in the group. It was a just a lucky purchase.

  5. Second was the just off the hook beautiful Diary Secrets #10. The gloss on this one is blinding. I got it very cheap due to the fact that it is trimmed a little off kilter as many St. Johns often are. But the weird thing is that the inside front and back covers as well as the back covers are blank! A printing error? Canadian? Not sure, but I just couldn't pass it up especially for the price. Might be the nicest Baker romance issue I have.

  6. Got a great package from a cool boards sale on Friday. I was surprised that I got these un-contested. A couple of the ones I didn't need went to other boardies but no one seemed to care about these. I was thrilled. About 1/2 of them I didn't have and the rest were color or condition upgrades. Color is so important on these Friction House books to me. I will often get a lower technical grade to get better color on them. I am down now to only a couple of these to finish off this title. Check 'em out. Aren't they purty?

  7. Church question... The earlier books have a pencil arrival date on many. There is usually a single digit number to the right. I think I read somewhere that indicated the number of copies of that particular book that was received by the store. Is this true? If so, the store received an incredible small amount of copies of some of these books. The fact that Church was so complete probably means the store put away a copy of every comic that came in for him. Kind of like Lamont Larson.

  8. Spoiler

Pulps are pretty easy. All the pages are numbered. Since they are perfect bound, the centerfold is not a problem like comics. The glue can dry out and cause pages just inside the covers to detach sometimes.

Like comics and other magazines, I always check the pages in all the pulps I get. Not to do so is sloppy and irresponsible. It's a huge part of the grading process.

The real problem with pulps is finding them in nice shape or finding them at all. They are way harder to find than comics. Putting together full runs of many of them can be all but impossible.

  10. I can't remember where I heard it but it was only a few years ago. I think cancer took him. Odd, that there is nothing about him except his work on the Buyer's Guide. Isn't everything on the Internet?

I do know in his later years he was doing a lot of celebrity photographs and attended the Academy Awards for several years.

My buddy and I will be set up at Booth 223 (Pono Comics).  We will have boxes of $1 books, some nice keys and other books.    Looking forward to meeting fellow boardies so please stop by and say hi.

Hey boys, good meeting you today! Hope you did good. You wanted Timelys? I doubt there were even any Timely funny animal books there...

  12. Went to this show today. Man, it was dismal... Maybe 3 or 4 dealers with any decent books. Bought a small pile of half price pre-code horror from Ed. A couple of decent books from Brad. Great dealers to spend your dough with.  A couple of OK cheap strays here and there. But, there is always "that guy" at every show off the beaten path. Got a couple great books cheap from one of those guys. Ticket and parking would have been. $60 for one day but got a free exhibitor badge so it turned out OK. Spent about 2 hours there and half that time talking to a few dealers. Saw pretty much none of the usual GA collectors. Bad weekend for a show. Will do a small report in my GA junk thread with some photos . Anybody else go?
