I was going to post a thread in the  GA section but ill put it here just to keep the clutter down. I might start a journal in the future to track stuff like this. Anyways...

Random hit on one of my want ads. Guy says he has 400+ golden age books he's looking to get rid of. Somewhat skeptical I start asking questions, history on the collection and whatnot.

Mid-low grade Original owner collection with initials on most of the books. Nothing that really stood out in the pics but I knew i had to jump on it. Go back and forth on price then he says hes a few hundred miles away. Im thinking i lost the deal now but i suggest shipping the books and to my surprise we hammer out a deal. The books arrived the other night. Still processing the books but some of the keepers are in the last pic. Lots of western, funnies, barks duck books. Some superhero stuff. Overall Im very happy with the deal.

Nice! Any Timely superhero books, or just DC/Fawcett?

Hello everyone! Been an on and off collector since I was 10(47years ago...). I'm on my fourth(and final-I'm dying with this one!) collection. I would define it as eclectic. I'm into underground comix, trading card sets(mostly politically oriented) from late 80s/early nineties. Also into Heavy Metal Magazine. I have all of the first wave of monthly issues, 1977-1985. I'm just starting to collect the quarterly issues that followed them. I tend to follow and collect the heavy hitter artists from this time. You know, Moebius, Richard Corben, Enki Bilal, Berni Wrightson, Howard Chaykin, Milo Manara, Charles Burns, etc. I also collect the old Warren magazines from the 60s & 70s(Creepy & Eerie), The Comics Journal, Mad Magazine. I have a few Silver/Bronze Marvels, mostly favorite issues I had when I was a kid. Anyway, I'm down here in Louisiana and have nobody to talk shop with. Looking for y'all out there who are also into these things. Looking to learn from y'all and possibly you learn from me, as I have amassed a semi-vast knowledge on these subjects.  My name is Michael (my friends call me Trog). Looking forward to conversing with you!

    Welcome!

Guess maybe I should invest in a scanner. :baiting:

Hehe. Jokes aside, they look nice! What did the 39 and 40 grade out as? The light is completely blocking the grades, and that 39 looks nice.

Yeah, I own the Marvel one as well. Both are amazing books. Unfortunately for new buyers, both are now oop so your likely going to have to spend at least $200-$250 if your looking to get a near mint copy that still has the storage box in near mint condition. That being said, if getting the XL version is not a big deal for you, Taschen has just released a new version of the 75 Years of DC Comics book that you can find for around $60. Its got the same number of pages, but the dimensions of the book are smaller. The new edition is roughly 9" x "13 with 720 pages. The XL version is roughly 12.5" x 18" with 720 pages.

Yeah, I know they have a smaller one now, but I want the XL one to put the box up against the Marvel one, heh. Having one XL and one smaller would just bother me to no end. I went to the most recent Taschen warehouse sale a couple weeks ago hoping to find one of the XL ones, but no luck (they had some of the individual Age books for both Marvel and DC, but I only saw 1 copy of the Marvel XL and none of the DC one). Which is a shame, because they discount pretty deeply during that sale. The Marvel one isn't too hard to find comparatively, I see it around (I know Midtown has at least one copy still, and used to have two), but the DC one...bleh. I think Strand may have a copy, but not sure if it has the box (or if it's the XL version or smaller version); haven't had time to go down there and see. May just have to wait and see if I stumble across a copy at a con...

Taschen is by FAR my favorite art book company in the world. Their XL and XXL series of art books are absolutely brilliant. They really put regular art books to shame. And I have seen those books your referring to on Taschen's website, but don't own them and have never seen them in person. I know they have one for Batman, Superman, Captain America, The Avengers, Fantastic Four, and Amazing Spider-Man. Here is the link to Taschen's main page for comic/graphic design books.

    https://www.taschen.com/pages/en/catalogue/graphic_design/all.htm?crt_page=1

I do own Taschen's 75 Years of DC Comics: The Art of Modern Mythmaking, which is part of Taschen's XL line and is an amazing book. I also own Taschen's The Marvel Age of Comics 1961–1978 & The Bronze Age of DC Comics and both are great books as well. And for those that like pin up art, I highly recommend Taschen's The Art of Pin-up, which is part of Taschen's XXL line. Its BY FAR the best book ever made on pin up art and is absolutely MASSIVE. Its 11.5" x 15.5", is 546 pages and weighs 15 pounds. Taschen's XXL books are so big that they come with thier own cardboard storage box with plastic handle.

I've been looking for the 75 Years of DC Comics book, which is annoyingly out of print. I have the Marvel one, which I greatly enjoyed, but still need to find the DC one to go along with it.

  6. Reorganize and resort my collection as my wife and I move into our first (not rented) apartment. Scope out what the situation is with my doubles/under-grades of my UXM run, and see if it may be worth trying to sell some of them to funnel the money towards a #1 (every little bit helps). Cross more off the list of what I need for my run. Maybe try to get into light dealing to help fund purchasing.

...basically. Yeah. Martin's thread in the post above me explains it pretty well. The marvelmasterworks boards are loading ok for me over here, does, this direct link work for you?

    marvel masterworks boards

That one worked, thanks! And yeah, I jumped the gun replying here; continuing to read through the quoted Masterworks thread here (particular page 2) started clearing up the variants-like-originals...

These are mainly sentimental value for me (getting Vol. 1, reprinting AF15 and ASM 1-10, as a reward from my parents was how I first got into comics); actual value would be nice (but doesn't seem to exist in this case beyond cover value), but I don't know that I'd be willing to pay more than like a few dollars a pop for just jackets. Unless I happen to stumble across them somewhere, I guess I'll just keep them as reminders of the follies of childhood...

    (Stupid variants driving down value....)

You might try the marvelmasterworks.com boards, and see if anyone has digital files that you could print or they'd be willing to print for you to replace what you're missing, for a fee. A lot of the guys over there seem to make custom jackets and the like, and sometimes offer custom jackets up for sale at cost. Maybe a long shot but that would be my best advice. Good luck!

Thanks for the info. Interesting website to look through...and makes my memories all the more confusing. So they originally printed in the marbled versions (which is what I remember having), then they started printing them in the Library versions as volume 2, and then they started reprinting the older ones with the original (vol. 1) marbled cover versions as variants of the Library (vol. 2) versions? (The forums on that website appear to be down, at least for me...)

  9. Not sure if I'd be willing to re-purchase them...I'd have to think on that one (not sure what the older ones may even be going for these days). I was mainly hoping there may be some place that had one but not the other, in the same kind of way that you might find toy accessories without the toys...

  10. Does anyone know where I may be able to find the dust jackets to particular Marvel Masterworks (and how much they may go for)? I have 11 volumes from when I was a kid, but unfortunately, Child Me lost or threw out the dust jackets as they tended to rip, and now Adult Me has the books but not the nice-looking jackets...if it matters, they're volumes 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 19, 23, and 24.

(Also, the same question goes for the 1991 Marvel: Five Fabulous Decades of the World's Greatest Comics book.)

    Thanks in advance!

A short Drawer Box is 18" long and should hold around 140 comics. So its very close to other short boxes. I used to use BCW so Drawer Boxes were roughly 1" longer. I don't understand why more comic shops don't sell these. It would be nice to be able to buy them one at a time, although that would likely be more expensive. When I finally decided to use Drawer Boxes, I decided to switch out all of my old boxes in one fell swoop so it didn't bother me that I had to buy in bulk as opposed to buying 1-2 boxes at a time, but I can understand that for people looking to just buy one of two boxes, that this would be an issue.

Okay, so roughly the same...good to know. Yeah, if I end up going this route (still trying to figure out how to store my books once my wife and I move into our new apartment and I lose my storage space), I would do it all in one go. It's just that I only have like, 12 GA/magazine-sized books and maybe 15 CGC, so having to get 4 boxes for those is a bit overkill xD
