    Who's the gold standard, then..?

    Overstreet.

There is also a company that grades slabs (joking).

CGC is the gold standard for me, because I collect almost exclusively Signature Series, and their 3rd-party authority for in-house authentication is unparalleled for signatures I didn't witness myself. I don't trust any other source to validate a signature.

Oh well. According to that guy I should just give up and sell the farm.

Seemed like you got a little bent outta shape there.

  2. Well, CGC says this isn't a problem. I inspected the slabs further. Eight had major scratches/scuffs on the front, some in the center of the cover (seen above). In total 39 out of 50 slabs had pretty severe scuffs or scratches.

Here is the official response after I asked for help with the eight that had worse issues.

"Sorry for the delay.  We had management review the images and they feel that these marks are normal and within our acceptable limits.  Generally, when the marks are small and on the side or edges of the holder, this will fall within our acceptable limits.  If the marks are large and go across the middle of the book or cover design then we can reholder them at no charge.  The holders are designed to protect the book and are not designed to be completely resistant to scratches and marks. "

  3. A total of 12% (5 total from two subs) of my books that were just graded have major scratches (some might say scuff marks). These books were delivered  to me from the CGC yesterday.

I havent had a problem like this before.

Hate to complain, but what would you do if this happened to you?

The image is from one the batgirl #23s from my sub that had very visible marks.

I sent a GSXM1 9.0 to them for reholdering... it had multiple cracks in the case, which I didn't even realize when I bought it... 19 years ago.

Checked tracking to see if they got it... and they'd refused it. O.o

Would it be due to damage? (thank GOD I bought insurance on it) The customer service desk couldn't tell me any specifics.

Happened to me for a Saturday delivery. It was delivered to CGC on Monday and everything was fine.

Sent 4 Value books for pressing and grading back in November 2018. Books were received on 11/8/18 and then pressing took 4 months. Books were returned back to CGC and "Received" 3/8/19 and no movement since. Can anyone give me an idea as to when I'll get these books back?

64 working days after cgc received then from ccs. I'm guessing they will be shipped sometime around mid-to-late june.

I am on Day 36 of a 9.8 Prescreen received Mar 8th....current TaT has 37 days for Prescreen...

    Still showing SFG...

My modern prescreen sub that was received on 3/7 was graded today (5/2). They do still post  what books were rejected before it ships, which is nice.

Is that a typo? I have some received on March 8th that still haven't been graded.....

I looked back in this thread and this user posted a screenshot of his/her order with those days. I'm in the same boat as you are, gregwynn. My order was received and sfg one day before your sub. I am confused.

From what I've been told there's a lot that goes into a "proper press".  There's nothing "quick" about a proper pressing.  I don't know everything involved, but I know humidifying the comic before the press is part of the process (and other parts of the process are simply "trade secrets" that take years of experience to learn).  I also know that each of the different eras of comics (Gold, Silver, Bronze, etc...) require different methods (temp & time in the press).

I may be wrong but I believe a quick press is only a quick heatpress with no humidifying.  After cooling down the paper fibers will want to revert to their pre-pressed state.

I can only say that the comics I have had "quick pressed", seem to look exactly the same when I get them back.  Whereas the comics that have been properly pressed look really good.

This is all my Opinion, maybe others have had big success with the quick press.  I just think if you're pressing looking for a bump in grade, just pay the extra money and have it done right.

I have no idea what the actual difference is, and gadzukes might be on to something (it might be related in part to the use of a humidity chamber when potentially beneficial).

I suspect that a "quick press" is a one and done heat press and a "press" via CCS might involve more effort (e.g., multiple, heat press attempts, a tacking iron or something similar for spot issues, and/or a humidity chamber, all when deemed potentially beneficial). I've experimented with pressing and sometimes I need a few attempts with a cold press, which takes additional time, effort, and ties up equipment. Again, all 100% speculation on my part.

    Thank you....BOTH of you!!

I feel like my butthole has been so clenched it could create a diamond out of coal.

I never got this book for investment...this was MY personal treasure: a set of DK 1-4, all 1st prints.  I didn't even care so much for grade, as long as they were genuine 1st prints.  And then less than a month ago the hand of the master himself scrawled his signature on all four issues.  I'm keeping these til the day I die.

So obviously it was poor research on my part that I only discovered roughly 24 hours ago that second prints weren't clearly marked.  I've been freaking out.  You guys are collectors; you know how that would just "ruin" things in my eyes...gazing lovingly at the set of four but lingering on issue 2...knowing it's an imposter.  What am I supposed to do?  Buy another issue 2 and try to find Frank again?  Just seeing him once nearly wiped me out...that was a once in a lifetime thing for me.

I feel so relieved now...thank you so much for the peace of mind!!   I think I can finally unclench now....

Happy to help. To put things in perspective, I bought a 2nd print of that book somewhere around 1987 and I thought it was a 1st because it wasn't labeled as a 2nd print. Back then, nobody wanted 2nd prints. That said, there is a now market for 2nd prints and sometimes 2nd prints command a higher value often due to rarity or a different cover(I still don't get it). A 2nd print CGC 9.8 DKR #2 sold for $100 recently. There are only 14 2nd print 9.8s graded in the census, which might lead some collectors to buy one (rarity or to complete a collection).  Even odder, in my opinion, is that a CGC 9.4 graphic novel that contains all 4 DKR issues sold for $140 (still trying to figure out how that fits in a slab).  That said, congrats on the 1st print.
