  1. In a home where people actually live the temp is going to fluctuate some, heater on in the winter, A/C on in the summer, windows open fall and spring. Anybody that stores their books in their home/apartment has their books stored in fluctuating temps between 65 - 80 degrees during the year unless they have a self contained/controlled environment room just for their comics. My books have been stored in "normal" household conditions since 1979 with no issues, keep the books away from the heater/A/C vents if possible, the problems come from "extreme" temps, UV light, excessive moisture/water.
  2. Welcome To the Boards!!! Missing Coupons, Story Pages, Non-Story Pages Missing Piece from a page (Coupons, MVS or inserts) - CGC does not go straight to Universal 0.5 (Poor) - CGC might grade the book as high as 3.5 (Very Good Minus) if the book is otherwise in nice condition. This happens most notably on Signature Series, Restored or a lower grade book where there is not enough grade difference to give the book a Qualified Grade. (Example: a book is missing a small coupon that does not affect the story and the book would grade a Qualified 4.0 vs. receiving a Universal 3.0) Missing an ad page that does not affect story: - CGC might grade a Universal 1.0 (Fair) on rare occasions Missing a Story page, Multi pages or Centerfolds - CGC will grade Universal 0.5 (Poor) Qualified Grades are used at the discretion of CGC if: - The book is not restored or trimmed - The book is not a Signature Series book - The book is not too low of a grade already - If a book is in the 3.5/3.0 range, CGC tends not to use the Qualified Grade for Missing Coupons, Story Pages and Non-Story Pages. Those books will receive a 0.5 (Poor) or on a rare occasion a 1.0 (Fair)
  3. From what I understand that is normal from opening the book due to the material the book is made from. IMO that book will probably not garner a 9.6/9.8 if that is what you are looking for. Books are graded by "overall" condition. My suggestion would be to open a thread in the "Hey Buddy Can You Spare A Grade" section with multiple pics of the book (front cover, back cover, complete spine, edges/corners, inside front cover/splash page, inside rear cover/last page and specifically ask about the spine.
  4. I thought I was the only one that collected Cartoon/Childhood comics. Besides all of the Sad Sack Titles (Sad Sack, Sad Sack and the General, Sad Sacks Funny Friends, Sad Sack Laugh Special, Sad Sack Complimentary, all of the 1950's promotional books, all #1's from the 60's/70's/80's and all Harvey Hits appearances) I also have all of the Tom Terrific Books and Beany and Cecil including the Four Color Comics appearances.
  5. That is a good question, IDK... And this, LOVE the Cover!!!
  6. Well I have complete runs up to the book number I chose to stop at (except for the big #1's which I will never have), not really interested in most stuff past the 70's, so..., most of these are not complete because of the #1's/1st appearances, but they are as complete as they are ever going to get. **ASM 2 - 128, 130 - 200 Annuals 1 - 5 (Marvel Tales 137/138 for AF 15/ASM 1 and MME for 129) **Avengers 2 - 130 Annuals 1, 2 (MME for #1) Daredevil 1 - 132 **Fantastic Four 2 - 200 Annuals 1 - 8 (MME for #1) **Incredible Hulk 2 - 6, 102 - 200 (MME for #1) **JIM 83 - 125 (GRR #83) ROM 1 - 75 Annuals 1 - 4 Sad Sack Comics 1 - 125 **Tales Of Suspense 1 - 38, 40 - 99 (MME for #39) Tales To Astonish 1 - 101 Thor 126 - 265 Two Gun Kid 1 - 60 **X-Men 2 - 66 (MME for #1)
  7. I am not a CGC guy, however to help answer the original question... If you send a Polybagged comic to CGC in the bag won't CGC remove it from the bag to grade and then dispose of the bag?
  8. Welcome To The Boards!!! I cannot help with your pressing question, however, IMO... If the book is perfect in every other way and that color breaking spine tick is the only defect IMO that book will be a VF/NM 9.0 MAX. Typically and by the grading standards a color breaking spine tick will not garner a grade higher VF+ 8.5. The first mention of stress lines comes in...NM 9.4 NM+ 9.6 - no creases, bends, or color break. NM 9.4 - Almost no stress lines NM- 9.2 - Almost no stress lines VF/NM 9.0 - A very minor accumulation of stress lines may be present if they are nearly imperceptible VF 8.0 - Very slight staple tears and a few almost insignificant stress lines may be present How does/will CGC view that?
  9. Welcome To the Boards!!! Actually your values are high, the closest we have to true Fair Market Value for Raw books (IMO) is eBay sold listings if you use them correctly, auctions only, minimum of 5 bidders, being sure there was no bidding war that artificially raised the price, pics show the book is in the same grade as yours, etc. I check eBay sold auctions twice a year for my key books, early issues of a character, my favorite books, books over $100.00 etc (info for my kids when I am gone) and in June ASM 10 in FR 1.0 was selling for $50.00, ASM 11 in FR/GD 1.5 recently sold on July 6 for $67.00, according to Go Collect (Graded Books Only) an ASM 11 in FR/GD 1.5 FMV (actual sold books) is $220.00. Having said all of that, grading is a personal choice depending on your plans for the books, If your goal is to sell for a profit then yes, graded books usually bring a higher price but you have to weigh out the cost vs selling price, just remember... Having a book graded does not offer any addition protection over a Mylite and Acid Free Board other than it can never be touched or read again, (you can get reprints to read the story) a CGC slab offers no UV protection and is not airtight so it still needs to be stored in the proper conditions just as any raw book would be. Another option for opinions would be to post pics of the book(s) in the "Hey Buddy, Can You Spare A Grade" section.
  10. I am 15 minutes from the Walt Whitman and 30 minutes from the Delaware Memorial, Stay Safe!!!
  11. Welcome To The Boards!!! It really does not matter, CGC is going to remove the book from the bag and dispose of the bag. Just an FYI...Books that are still in the original polybag are not automatically NM 9.4/NM+ 9.6, etc, the polybag itself often times causes damage to the book from the book resting against seams in the bag, etc, just do not want yo to be disappointed.
  12. If your raw books are stored properly (bagged and boarded, preferably Mylites) it does not matter if you use plastic or cardboard since the book will never physically touch the box. If you are going to be constantly lifting/moving/transporting the boxes then plastic will hold up better, I have been using standard cardboard storage boxes since I found them in the early 80's. If you are afraid of a destructive event such water leaking from a pipe/roof, rodents, etc then I would assume plastic will help in a situation like that, basically it will come down to personal preference. As far as graded books, you will need separate boxes for those due to size. https://www.bcwsupplies.com/graded-comic-book-box
  13. And does CGC take that into consideration when grading modern books or no?
  14. With the spine split? Also, is that wear on the spine w/color breaks or normal for modern comics. Only asking because the last new comic I bought was in 1997.
  15. A friend asked me if I could grade this for him and I am not sure where this book would fall. The book appears to be relatively nice other than... 1" spine tear at top (IMO will garner a Green Label) and what appears to be damage to the spine, all white, are they color breaks or normal for some modern books? Thanks!!!
  16. Not sure what you collect but there are Facebook groups for every type of collector. I belong to "Comics 'Silver Age", "Marvel Comics Fans 1961 - 1986", "Low Grade Comic Collectors And Buy/Sell/Trade", "Old Guys Who Like Old Comics".
  17. The only reason i am now on Facebook is, when my Son decided to sell his books I started by contacting contacting comic shops in the area, it seems nobody does e-mail anymore, the only way to contact these shops is through Facebook or Twitter, so I joined Facebook. After only getting one interested party who offered pennies on the dollar I joined some comic book Facebook groups just to talk about comics. Only one that I am in has allows for sale or ISO posts, I wait until I someone that wants something and then I message them, send them pics and a price. If they are interested they send money to my Son's PayPal account and I ship the books, Priority Mail only, once I drop it at the post office I send them the tracking info. All books are in Mylites w/Boards, placed in Bubble Bags and Sandwiched between two pieces of Heavy Cardboard. KNOCK ON WOOD!!! I have yet to experience any issues yet, the folks on the Facebook comic book groups I am in tend to look out for each other, if someone has an issue and gets ripped off everyone knows about it, who did it and what the issue was. These groups are not like the Gaming groups where everyone just Bit***s and Cries and Complains about Online play and how so and so cheated, there is none of that, it is all about showing what you have and talking about the hobby and collecting.
  18. I usually grade very conservatively, however I was not sure how much to deduct for the tracing marks, other than that I thought the book graded at a FN+ 6.5 - VF- 7.5. Either way I am seeing copies selling for around $250.00 on eBay with some in better shape and some in worse shape, I am also seeing books in the same or worse shape selling for around $200.00, I cannot get a good read on this. https://www.ebay.com/itm/The-Amazing-Spider-Man-300-May-1988-Marvel-/184360050690?hash=item2aecb72002%3Ag%3Ai3MAAOSw0uxfCMdY&LH_Auction=1&nma=true&si=eSSTId0Ee4bFqhe9P0R0Z8pjr8c%3D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 https://www.ebay.com/itm/Amazing-Spider-Man-300-1988-1st-Appearance-of-Venom-Newsstand-/133402583920?hash=item1f0f69e370%3Ag%3A3EEAAOSwfZpesLOv&LH_Auction=1&nma=true&si=eSSTId0Ee4bFqhe9P0R0Z8pjr8c%3D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
  19. I have dealt with others in FB groups selling books and to this point I have had no issues selling books such as ASM Annual 1, ASM 361, X-Men 94, 100, 101, 137, 141, etc. None of the books are actually listed for sale, I wait until I see someone looking for something and then I message them. I do agree this sale sounds risky.
  20. FN 6.0 is exactly what I said, the questions I received are... 1)How did you arrive at that grade? I sent him the same pics and descriptions as I posted here along with pics of the FN 6.0 grading standards and defects pages from the Overstreet Grading Guide. 2)Why can't you guarantee that CGC will grade that as a FN 6.0 if you say it is a FN 6.0? The answer I gave is... Grading is subjective, CGC graders are human, nobody ever knows what grade their book will come back as until they receive it. 3)His original post in a FB group was...First time poster, ISO an ASM 300 Low to Mid Grade, I contacted him and he says...He was looking to spend more for something in a higher grade but he is very interested in this book, especially because the price is lower than anything he has seen on eBay. I am not totally sure what to do here, seems like it may be a risky sale, Opinions...
  21. Someone is interested in this book, however, they are questioning the grade that I assigned to the book, so I will let the community decide. Notable defects... 1)Spine Ticks W/Color Break (Approx 11-12, only a couple make it around to the front cover, the majority are only on the spine itself) 2)Small 3/4" non color breaking crease near the spine tick just above spidey's web. 3)Very Slight 2 1/2" non color breaking crease top right corner 4)The most detrimental defect, it appears someone tried to trace something on the inside front cover, only one line made it through to the outside front cover and from the outside it looks like a single line crease. THANK YOU!!!
