  1. Welcome To The Boards. As already stated contact the seller but have all of your info together before contacting them. Did the seller use stock photos of the books as compared to an actual photo of the books? What did the sellers description say about the books and their condition, did it mention a grade or any defects?
  2. We all know what happened when old Biff gave young Biff the Sports Almanac... I appreciate all of the info. If I run into issues when the time comes do you guys mind if I message you with any questions? Birthday is August so I will be signing up May 1.
  3. Most comic shops use fluorescent lighting that is very high in UV Radiation, so... As others have already stated, all you can do is minimize the UV your books/collectibles are exposed to, Sunlight is the worst... From what I have read the issue with Halogen Bulbs is Heat. https://www.nedcc.org/free-resources/preservation-leaflets/2.-the-environment/2.4-protection-from-light-damage
  4. Just remember that grading is the "Overall" condition of the book. It becomes more difficult when you have a higher grade book with only one significant defect that would lower the grade, lower to what is the question...An example would be, you have a book that is without doubt a NM 9.4 but, the book has a 1/2" spine split from being mishandled, is the otherwise NM 9.4 book going to drop to a VG/FN 5.0 where a 1/2" spine split is allowed? Hence, the reason for CGC Green Qualified Labels. I have a few books of my own that had only one significant defect that kept the book from being a higher grade IMO and in my list of books it is noted that way, GD 2.0 (Would be a VG/FN 5.0 except for...)
  5. I know I am a conservative grader, hope you guys are right, 7.0 would be Great!!!
  6. IMO this book grades at... 1.5 FAIR/GOOD (FR/GD): Back to TopShows substantial to heavy wear. Books in this grade are commonly creased, scuffed, abraded, soiled, and possibly unattractive, but still generally readable. Cover shows considerable wear and may be detached. Almost no cover reflectivity remaining. Book-length creases, tears and folds may be present. Rounded corners are increasingly common. Soiling, staining, discoloration and foxing is generally present. Up to 1/10 of the back cover may be missing. Tape and other forms of amateur repair are increasingly common in Silver Age and older books. Spine roll is common. May have a spine split between 2" and 2/3 the length of the book. Staples may be degraded, replaced or missing. Staple tears and stress lines are common, as well as rust migration. Paper is brown and may show brittleness around the edges. Acidic odor may be present. Centerfold may be loose or detached. Interior tears are common. BTW...there is nothing wrong with "Well Loved" copies, your copy is in better shape than mine and yours is 100% better than those who do not own any copy. IMO, any collector would be Proud to have that copy in their collection.
  7. Welcome To The Boards. If you post pics of the book in the "Hey Buddy, Can You Spare A Grade" section you can get an approximate grade which will help you determine value.
  8. Not to get off subject but I am already on my states Medicaid program and I am uncertain what will happen when I sign up for Medicare, all I know is that Medicare pays first and Medicaid pays what Medicare does not. My only income is my SS so I am assuming things will remain pretty much as thay are. If anybody has any advice on what the upcoming months will bring or what I should be looking out for Please message me.
  9. I have never used that site and did not even know it existed, seems to be accurate from the little bit I played with it and it is showing you pics of the actual defects so it is IMO a very good learning tool. You may want to also use this along with that site... https://comics.ha.com/tutorial/comics-grading.s?show=comicdefinitions
  10. I cannot give you exact answers, however, it seems that if someone answers an unanswered thread others will soon follow, so... Do you plan on sending this book in to CGC to be graded? The book appears to be a GD- 1.8 IMO, I do not send my books in for grading, however, from what I have read on the boards a CGC Universal Blue Label GD- 1.8 is much better than a (GD+ 2.5/GD/VG 3.0 ??) Restored Purple Label if that is what restoration brings. According to GoCollect.com a CGC graded X-Men 1 GD- 1.8 is selling for $3100.00, Purple Label?
  11. Worth Grading, all depends on your plans for the book. IMO this book is a... 5.0 VERY GOOD/FINE (VG/FN): Back to TopAn above-average but well used comic book. An accumulation of bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor to moderate cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases and/or dimples. Inks have moderate to low reflectivity. Blunted corners are increasingly common, as is minor to moderate staining, discoloration, and/or foxing. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. A minor to moderate spine roll is allowed. A spine split of up to 1/2" may be present. Staples may show minor discoloration. Minor staple tears and minor stress lines may also be present, as well as minor rust migration. Paper is tan to brown with no signs of brittleness. Centerfold may be loose. Minor interior tears may also be present.
  12. Nice Book and Good Job with the Pics!!! IMO this book is... 6.0 FINE (FN): Back to TopAn above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with no significant creasing or other serious defects. Some accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases. Inks show a significant reduction in reflectivity. Blunted corners are more common, as is minor staining, soiling, discoloration, and/or foxing. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. A minor spine roll is allowed. There can also be a 1/4" spine split or severe color break. Staples may show minor discoloration. Minor staple tears and a few slight stress lines may be present, as well as minor rust migration. Paper is tan to brown and fairly supple with no signs of brittleness. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present. Centerfold may be loose.
  13. I sign up for Medicare in May. Medicare is the federal health insurance program for: People who are 65 or older.
  14. Welcome To the Boards!!! Since nobody has responded to your question... A CGC slab does not offer any more protection to a comic book than a Mylite with an Acid Free Board other than it can never be touched again, slabs are not "Hermetically Sealed" and do not offer any UV Protection. Both CGC slabs and Raw books stored in a Mylite need to be stored in the same conditions or they will sustain damage/deterioration over time, A Controlled Environment/Temperature/Humidity away from All UV Light, Heat Sources and Water. Books slabbed or raw should not be stored in an attic, unfinished basement or garage
  15. Welcome To The Boards!!! Pictures Please and this should probably be in the "Hey Buddy, Can You Spare A Grade" section to get more views and answers.
  16. Those are "Perforation Tears" and are a Bindery Defect. They will not affect the grade unless you are in the 9.8 range. Perforations - Small hole at the page margins which sometimes occur as part of the manufacturing process. Not considered a defect. Perforations are sometimes used to tell if a comic is an unread copy. In such a copy tell-tale clicks are heard when the book is opened for the first time as the perforations separate.
  17. Welcome To The Boards!!! Take some pics of the entire book (Front/Back Cover, Spine, Edges/Corners, Page W/Marks) and post them in the "Hey Buddy, Can You Spare A Grade" section.
  18. There is nothing you can do to correct the damage that has already been done, however, you can prevent future damage... If these coverless books are for reading only, with absolutely no monetary value then you can use an Archival Tape on the edges of the pages to prevent the pages from falling apart even more than they already are when touched, you can also (people will shudder at this) use Scotch Tape if all you are interested in is preserving them for reading. If you choose not to do that, then... When you read the book, lie it down on a flat surface, when turning the pages be very careful lifting the page and allow the page to fall on its own when turned. To prevent any further damage store the books in the proper conditions. Bag and Board (poly will be fine for inexpensive, coverless books), in a controlled temperature/moisture environment (no attics/unfinished basements/unfinished garages) away from all light, heat sources and water/excessive moisture.
  19. I have concerns about the staples and miswrapped cover, is that the way the book came from the bindery? The spine shows the most wear with vertical/horizontal creases that break color, slight edge wear and blunted corners. The book presents extremely well, however, with the spine and staples I cannot assign a grade above a VG/FN 5.0, hopefully I have under graded this book and it comes back higher. Minor interior tears may also be present
  20. First, grading is subjective, even at CGC, people are not perfect. Secondly, and I know you have heard this 1000's of times already..."A collectible is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it", Comic Books and other Collectibles do not have a "set" value, it is not like walking into Walmart and the price is on the shelf, what a book/collectible actually sold for is its value at that time, sometimes books sell for more than their "listed value" and sometimes they sell for less, eBay sold auctions are a very good indicator of FMV and what people are willing to pay at that time. When you look at eBay sold auction prices there are a few things you have to consider... 1)The Grade of your book, easy if it is CGC graded book, if it is raw then you have to assign a grade. https://comics.ha.com/tutorial/comics-grading.s?show=comicdefinitions 2)You have to look at Sold Auctions only and you need to look for certain things... a)The book you are viewing is in the same grade as yours, do not take a sellers word for what the grade is, look at the pictures, does it look worse or better than the grade you assigned your book? b)How many people bid on the book/auction, you want to look at auctions that had a minimum of 5 different bidders and you want to be sure the price was not artificially inflated due to a bidding war. c)You want to look at as many recent auctions as possible with books in/around your grade to get a fair representation of FMV. d)Yes, when all is said and done it will be an average price, not a set in stone price, there is no such thing with collectibles.
  21. Just thought i would throw this out there... If a comic book is placed in a bag and stored in a comic box there is no air circulation around the book anyway, also, there is some air circulation in a closet, it is not a hermetically sealed environment, I actually have an air return duct in my bedroom closet. The key is to keep temp and humidity as Constant as possible, the more the book has to expand/contract/react/change to its environment the faster the acids in the print and paper are released leading to faster decay of the book, will it happen quickly, in your lifetime??? The only things i have seen that degrade a book quickly are UV and Water.
