I recently grabbed an ASM 13 (vol 1), and it took me 30 minutes to get through it... was fantastic  :)

Isn't that funny?   I can read 4 Modern books in the time it typically takes to get through 1 Silver Age book.  Maybe I am just taking my time, enjoying the art, ads, and backgrounds of the old stuff.  There seems to be more dialogue, and thought put into the word bubbles back then, keeping in mind these were typically written for a younger audience.   Today's comic is more 1 or 2 lines of dialogue in a panel, more spread pages, and these books are typically written for a more mature audience.   hm

An unheard of teen age superhero who was the star of his own book - a black superhero who was the star of his own book, a black superhero from Africa! - a black Captain Marvel - a team of mutants from all over the world - remember that one? Giant Size X-Men #1 that featured an African female, an Indian, a Canadian, an Irishman - was that Social Justice?

With the exception of Captain Marvel, those were all new characters that were created.    Not some cheap replacement behind the mask.

lol! i'm not actually reading it. I just think its a really neat!

I'm reading it, and cringing every time I hand over my money, knowing that Alonso & Spencer are getting paid for this.

I don't forsee an outcome that they can write that will not be a result of lazy writing (Example:  Kobik will just revert everything like this never happened, or he was a Life Model Decoy, Clone whatever).   So jokes on us, I guess.

If they truly want to change his history of the last 75 years, and say he really was an undercover Hydra Agent, he was just faking it, Marvel will officially see the last of my dollars.

Wouldn't the higher volume = lower prices? Or are you saying that non-modern gets SS more often?  Cause that's not the case.  It's a rhetorical question.  The reason they charge $5 for SS modern books than non-modern is that they can and they know people will still do them.

I'm thinking they have more Modern SS, and they have to dedicate more resources to clear those out.

As mentioned a few pages back, Disney is very concerned with, and very good at creating entertainment that not only spans generations, but appeals to people in basically all stages of life.  They are absolute experts on capturing kids very young, and having a systematic way of progressing those people not only through age groups, but also various forms of media. Marvel as a subsidiary should have access or at least be able to learn from Disney how they have managed to do this.  I take a look at friends and family, and it amazes me that Disney makes most little girls want to be a princess, and then manages to crate a life long love in those girls for most things Disney. The appeal is truly generational, to the point that going to Disney movies, or Disney World is basically a right of passage in the US. Plus, they do it not only with new characters, but in a fashion that keeps the old characters both popular and somewhat relevant.

I am not sure how this can be adopted to a more male comic book market, but it seems to me the knowledge is already in house.  I do not except printed comics to be the backbone of this model, just as books are not the driving force for Disney's other characters.  They can however be kept relevant, as a breeding ground for ideas, and there should be opportunity to grow the market.  But just as other industries are being forced to change in the digital world, so must Marvel.

Disney also understands the value of Mickey Mouse-Minnie Mouse- Goofy-Donald Duck-Pluto.  They are just as valuable to them today as they were in 1930's/40's.    Marvel is not doing that with their mainstays (at least on the print side).   That fact that there is no Fantastic Four comic being printed will always be a head scratcher.

  6. Just give us a good story, with some good art.

We are simpletons.  We don't ask for much.  The current Marvel has done anything but give us good stories.  They throw new personas behind the mask and say "Here take it, like it, buy it".  And when we don't WE are the problem, not them.  Marvel is full of a bunch of self righteous jerks right now, and given the layoffs that Disney had at ESPN, hopefully the Marvel offices will not be far behind.  Starting with Alonso and Nick Spencer.

Attempting to collect all of Iron Man vol. 1, this comic will the biggest hindrance on completing.

Kind of with you.  I like the character enough, but the price doesn't seem to justify.   Is there another First Appearance Bronze Age villain that is commanding that kind of money?

I'm not, but it was suggested earlier in the thread, I've never heard of such a thing. As I said to each his own, but maybe @Dr.Fate'sFullHelmet has had a different experience.

I keep my raws flat with bags n boards and slabs upright. FateHelmet, we're not trying to harp on you, it's just I've never heard of such a thing as what you suggested. If it were true you think that it would be common knowledge

I've never seen CGC books stored horizontally.  That makes little to no sense.  Not to mention the handy label at the top of the book, so you can see it when it is in a box vertically.

Is Gambit in this book? Or in any current series? I saw him on the connecting variants but didn't notice him when I flipped through the book.

So far it is just the time displaced Cyclops, Jean, Iceman, Angel, and Beast.  Magneto is supposedly leading them now.  Just wondering what the Blue was in reference to the title?  I get Gold (top team, best team etc.), why didn't they call this X-Men Silver (since they are Silver Age heroes in a Modern time).  Just wondering....

  10. X-Men Blue- (anybody?)

Picked it up, and even though I have kind of been out of the X-Men titles for awhile, I felt like it was a decent read.  I am a sucker for the Original 5.   Any significance withe the BLUE in the title of the book (does it refer to anything?)
