  1. And I've bolded an important portion above that you seem to not understand. At this point in your life, there is no distinction between "my money" and "government money". If you weren't on government assistance, the money you "earned" selling comics would go toward the basic necessities that government money is currently covering. If this weren't the case, you wouldn't qualify for government assistance. It would be no different if you said "I put all my earned money toward food/rent/utilities, all government money goes to comic book purchases". There is no difference. Taxpayers are now paying for your expenses and they don't care what specific dollars are earmarked for what. At this point in your life, the money is all the same and you must consider all money "government money". This will only change once you get off government assistance. This should be part of your motivation to get a job. I never thought of it that way so no wonder why boardies were getting angry. I treat taxes like this, once I pay for it and because it's required I don't care as it's not my money anymore is that wrong? You never thought of it that way? Despite the fact that Revat gave you a very similar example to which you responded? I omitted some stuff for space, but the point is still there. I firmly believe that you're reading everything that people write, but you seem to pick and choose what you take out of the good advice that people are giving. The fact that these points seem to bounce right off of you is the reason people's goodwill toward you is eroding. Do you know what "lip service" is? If not, look it up. By responding to most posts and not heeding the advice given, that's exactly what you're doing and it's quickly turning from honest to disrespectful. It's not enough to just read and respond. Really think about what people write here. For example, I remember MONTHS ago, you posted that you usually go to drop off resumes/applications wearing a hoodie. Some well-established comic dealers came in and said to lose the hoodie as it's not professional. Fast forward a few months and you tell us that you're still wearing a hoodie to drop off resumes. Are you kidding me? Like I said, because of decisions you are choosing to make, you are choosing to be unemployed. You need to make better decisions if you want to succeed. All the tips you need to follow already exist in thise thread (sometimes several times over). Don't ask for specifics. Go back 6 months in this thread and read each and every post. Make a list of all the advice people have given you. This is a serious exercise and could do a lot of good. Yep. And while he's looking up "lip-service", he might also look up what "casting pearls to swine" means because that's exactly what everyone here has pretty much been doing for him for almost a year. And yet he doesn't get it. Gabe, quit buying/selling/trading comics. You don't have the money or time for that "hobby". Go get ANY job you can get, the more menial the better (dishwasher, bus-boy, whatever). Work for a couple of years at it until you're the BEST person doing that menial job and have become "the expert" on it so that you can train others. A restaurant we've been going to for 10 years has had the same bus-boy/table-clearer since we first started going there - and he is GOOD at what he does and now pretty much supervises the others. You need to take any job you can get and do NOT be picky - if you don't like it - too bad, you will learn a TON more about responsibility, work ethics and the value of money from that kind of job than from a happy-cushy-super-job that you love. And those are three things you REALLY need to learn. Your pledge to quit trading comics until 2017 is nonsense - that's only about 10 months away - what if you're still on welfare and still haven't learned a damn thing yet? Are you going to say "Woohoo it's 2017 now I can start trading again!"? Get. A. Job. And work your off, keep your mouth shut, put up with people you don't like, learn a skill or trade and grow the ... up. And these will hopefully be the last pearls I cast before swine in this thread. (although watching this perpetual trainwreck is addicting). So I'm this definition? cast pearls before swine (literary) to offer something valuable to someone who does not understand that it is valuable Giving him advice is just casting pearls before swine. He doesn't listen. See also: before, cast, pearl, swine Cambridge Idioms Dictionary, 2nd ed. Copyright © Cambridge University Press 2006. Reproduced with permission. For quitting this hobby I still have my stuff to sell before that. A menial job is the only one I can get and for learning more things I still have a lot to learn but I've learned you mean nothing to them, they give you a middle finger for all your hard work and only care about their own . I realize I do need a job to become stable again and I do have work ethics for every job I've had but I do need to learn the value of money more. You like stories I can give you why I don't like these jobs. I was working on the week of Christmas a a dishwasher and they were recently teaching me prep cook this despite me not wanting that responsibility. I worked over 90 hours that week and you know what? no thank you no nothing she called me into her office and told me 'look at all these hours we'll have to fire you if you keep this up" so that's the thanks I got for working so hard for you? making sure everything was perfect, done in a efficient manner, and making sure everyone is happy? As for no trading till 2017 you say it's only ten months you're underestimating how much time that actually is that's about the maximum time it takes for a human to break a habit and I'm pretty sure I can do that to as I've said no to trade offers recently. I have no intention of staying on welfare that long. For skills I was thinking a welder or something tech based. You have to ask yourself this question... how long should it have taken you to complete those jobs? If it should have taken you 90 hours then yes I agree that sucks. But chances are it should not have. And that is why you were let go. Taking 90 hours for a 40 hour job is not efficiency unfortunately. You need to see the errors in your ways. Did they explain what you did wrong?
  2. The trade of my IG #1 9.8 X5 and 9.6 x2 and avengers 57 5.0/5.5 and 58 at 7.0/7.5 I valued at 800 In exchange for his HOS #92 CGC 7.0 and NM 98 8.5/9.0 at the time was worth $850-1000 Reasons for wanting to trade. Not taking a loss Trading for more liquid books to get cashflow less fees At the surface the values don't seem far off (without me dipping into GPA because I'm lazy atm). My issue... is that trade seems too good to be true. I don't follow the infinity gauntlet books very much but what I can guess is: 1) Huge print run as is with most copper books 2) Will drop after the movie speculation and has very little chance to increase in value until infinity war movies come out 3) Avengers 57 has been decreasing after Avengers age of ultron (last time I checked) The two books you're getting (especially HOS92) are among the hottest books on the market. I look at the other guy and I can't see why I'd make that deal with you... unless I was going to scam you. I mean maybe he's a huge fan of the infinity gauntlet stuff but why would he need that many copies at once? Maybe he thinks it's easier to sell these books to get his money back (the cheaper the book, the more people can afford it). Sort of how you think it's easier to sell the HOS92 and NM98. If I'm you, yeah I make that trade 7 days a week, but I don't think you protected yourself. I don't think you understood what I meant by exchanging value on paypal to protect from scamming. I'll try and explain again with this exact example: You pay this guy $800 using goods and services for HOS 92 and NM98 He pays you $800 using goods and services for the IG copies and Avengers 57 You both mail with tracking and insurance. Now lets assume he is going to scam you and not send you the HOS92 and NM98 but you sent your books... what can you do? You file a paypal claim against him and recoup your $800 because he didn't send the books. If everything worked out, your $800 and his $800 would essentially cancel out (minus the paypal fees of $24). Make sense? I would avoid trading as the others have said though.
  3. That's where the problem lies if I don't trade I either have to sell for a loss or wait till it reaches a price where I can make a profit on it. Sell for a loss man. Get cash back and just be sure you're buying books you can profit on with the cash you got back. You can't move forward unless you accept the loss and move on. Everyone loses on something. Being stubborn in this situation is only hurting you further. Here's my advice: 1) Throw every book up for auction. Start and end it on a Sunday. 2) use that cash and go hit your local stores and buy books that your local shops have priced too low. Not every sale has to be a home run. Go in the local shop, find some books priced at $20-$50 Cdn and see if you can sell them for $20-50 in US dollars. Say for instance you find a DC comics presents 26 for $50 Cdn in your shop. Buying it for $50 in Canadian and selling it for $50 usd will make you - $50usd x 1.40 = $70cdn. You've made $20 on one book by taking advantage of the weak Cdn dollar. Do that a few times over.
  4. That's one of the things I keep in the back of my head and most of the smaller comics I have are what I bought in Canada. How I do transactions on Facebook is exactly how you describe it except for trades I just buy insurance. Think wanting to trade here would amount to anything? Trade wise? Insurance won't protect you if the book is delivered to them and they don't honour their part of the trade. At least if you use my method PayPal will refund your money since they didn't honour their half of the deal.
  5. Real good breakdown here. Being in Canada as well is very beneficial for selling with the way the USD is. Another thing to keep in mind, is if you bought these books when the CAD-USD was better so say ($1 USD gets you $1.25 CDN) you've already made 15% by doing nothing. It wasn't too long ago the dollar was at 1.25. This allows you to price your books cheaper to just break even if you want to recoup your funds and move forward on some better sellers. One way to avoid any issues with trading on facebook is this: 1) Sell your item using goods and services to the other party for $X 2) In a separate transaction, you buy their item using goods and services for $X You pay the fees... which sucks, but you're protected if you are unfamiliar with the other party.
  6. Have you offered payment plans? If you can provide references for sales, payment plans may be an option and the buyer may be comfortable doing it.
  7. Might as well start one up!
  8. Bought a book from David, very easy to work with. Great seller. Highly recommended.
  9. Here's another that I've seen... Showcase 22 From production?
  10. Sorry if this has been asked: Gator, grade for grade, do you feel that the value of Showcase 4 will surpass Hulk 1 in the coming years? How about brave and the bold 28 surpassing Fantastic Four #1 (or at least reaching the same value, grade for grade)? Thanks!
  11. That is correct. Quality control during the printing process was negligible in those days. There's all kinds of colour variance evident in any issue of a Silver Age or older comic. If you stop looking at scans and just hold up two copies of the same comic, it's very obvious. I'll see if my wife lets my grab another copy to do the comparison... I feel she won't listen haha
  12. I'm assuming you mean the gray of the background. Thanks jimbo I'll do a search for it. .....it's the one where there is gray instead of blue in the logo's lettering.....and other areas as well. It's the copy you referred to as "faded"Those copies with this variation seem more scarce and I've always thought that the Cyan plate was not prepared properly and the mistake was caught very early in the print run GOD BLESS.... -jimbo(a friend of jesus) ..... I've seen other DC's with this problem, all from the late '50's to around '60 .... Interesting, on my copy the greens are different but the blues are definitely not grey. My copy is likely not the grey variant... instead its likely some variations in the ink as previously stated. Would any certain copies fetch less in the market place?
  13. I noticed that cgc label being super bright. Good call.
  14. I'm assuming you mean the gray of the background. Thanks jimbo I'll do a search for it.
  15. Lately I've been looking into some big DC keys like action 252 and brave and the bold 28 for example. I've noticed a some variations In the cover colors. For instance the green on green lantern is different but the colours don't actually look faded and the Reds on flash typically look consistent book to book. If they are faded it doesn't look like the greens correlate to each other much. Then again I'm no fading expert on colors. Is that to do with the scanner/lighting? Seller turning up the saturation? Or did the production ink have variations during production? Curious if anyone knows. Or has thoughts and opinions. For example Now this one id call faded
  16. Very jealous of all of you! Such a great book to own. TMNT got me into collecting comic books, as they were my first ever purchased books. I've been focusing on DC silver age but I think this may be my next target. Don't care about the grade either.
