  1. I’m a big fan of some of the cartoon comics, and one reason I feel that they don’t have the same popularity is that there are few “first appearances” in the comics. So you have to settle for “first comic book appearance” which does not carry the same weight. For example, Action Comics 1 is the first appearance of Superman, anywhere. I struggle to think of a cartoon character parallel from the GA. Combine that with the fact that even a lot of the first comic book appearances aren’t well-documented, and it makes for a hard jumping on point for traditional collectors, even those familiar with the cartoons.
  2. Cool find, but I doubt Bill Gaines was even on Biro’s radar at this point in time. This was on the stands only 2 months after M C Gaines died and Bill took over.
  3. There are a lot of great books here. I like that a lot of the keys are entry-level grades; that means some of us that swim in the shallower end of the pool will have a shot at them. And that ashcan is beautiful!
  4. How near? I would absolutely be interested in that auction!
  5. The was one SOTI war book: Frontline Combat 4
  6. My EC sweet spot for CGC slabbed issues is 7.5. When some of my faves come up for sale in that grade I’ll track them, just to see how my own issues are faring. That practice paid off recently when an auction was closing for this book: This issue is a favorite because not only is it Ingels’ first reanimated graveyard corpse, it also has one of the best EC stories, in my opinion, “Poetic Justice”. I took a look at the back cover scan, since the book was still tragically low and I was considering picking it up as a spare… That’s when I noticed something pretty cool. Now not only did CGC not catch that it was a Bethlehem pedigree, neither did the auction house. I feel super lucky to have checked this at the last minute. I have another PCH Bethlehem pedigree, but this one is my first EC Beth. I’m super-amped to be getting this one!
  7. As I am currently trying to put together a pedigree run, I would say pedigree is the priority for me. I passed up one issue because it was a pedigree but lower graded than my highest graded copy (9.0 ped vs 9.4 for the non-ped). That isn’t a mistake I plan on repeating.
  8. My preference goes: Unrestored>Conserved>Restored. That having been said, there is some Resto that is the kiss of death for me; trimming and reglossing come to mind. Since GA prices are moving toward those of fine art, with my budget I’ve become a lot less picky. Conserved hits that sweet spot of not really having any negatives for me, as long as the PQ is good. I’ll take a white page Conserved before a Brittle Blue any day!
  9. Yes! I’d forgotten about the 15. The 34, 16 and 45 were for sale in The Buyers Guide for I believe around $10k each shortly after they were discovered.
  10. IIRC this showed up in the mid-90s along with Adventure 45, Action 16 and More Fun 47.
  11. This rare book sports the first cover featuring Doll Man and it’s done by the legendary Lou Fine. Only 5 on the census.
