  1. I haven’t seen nor heard of a “pencilled S” New 2. The only unslabbed copies I know are are (potentially) the Bridwell and the one that sold on eBay last October. That one presented well enough but the spine was completely split. Even with that defect it went for $1858.
  2. If you guys ever get the chance to read an early issue of New Comics, especially 1-10, you’re going to be amazed at the interior art by Joe Shuster on Federal Men. It’s incredible. I wish DC would release a reprint of these collected stories.
  3. I haven’t seen a slabbed one yet that looked like it. I had the 2 and 3 from Bridwell; the 2 was really rough, and the 3 had a big ding thru 2/3 of the book. I love these early paper cover-to-cover books; they are super scarce pieces of history.
  4. I have the 1.5 Blue of New Comics 2, and happy to have it. It’s the second copy I’ve owned; the first was the one from the Bridwell collection and I picked it up right after Phil Levine bought the collection. I sold it to Rick Frogge in 1991.
  5. I’ll have to dig them out; I have a few that haven’t been shared yet. Wish I still had my Bridwell books and their certs.
  6. Mine is an 8.5. Some of the GFC war books are surprisingly low. There’s a 30 that is a 5.5.
  7. Weird coincidence: I just picked up the 9/10 GFC Of that same issue yesterday!
  8. Key book and a beauty! If I didn’t already have one I’d be all over this. GLWS.
  9. One of my favorite unsung heroes, Captain Red Cross.
  10. I didn’t get this week’s New #2 because I didn’t want to be greedy. I already have a blue 1.5; so it would have been an upgrade but a purple one….it was a tough decision but I let it go. I eventually want get all of the regular sized prehero paper-covered books, but it’s a slow and steady goal (my last pickup was a Comics Magazine/Funny Pages V.1#3 last summer).
  11. It was really great seeing these early books come to auction. I was hoping to score Comics Magazine 2 but it went past my comfort point. The New 2 I was bidding on as a spare. First DC Christmas cover, one of the rarest DC books out there and the first Federal Men (S&S’s best work pre-Superman)-I’ve always had a soft spot for this book.
  12. I’m STILL kicking myself for not buying the original art for this cover back in 1997.
  13. I looked at the high res scans of this one and it looks like the brittle paper is on only the bottom edge. What’s visible of the paper on the right edge does not look brittle at all. If that is the case, this should have been (and should be point forward) something addressed in the notes. Something along the lines of “outer edge bottom brittle, remainder of book cream/ow”. That would help potential buyers make a more informed decision. The reds on this cover are absolutely beautiful!
  14. The Junior Federal Men certificate is my white whale! I have two sets of the pins but the cert is tough.
