  1. Ok everyone. Look - everything you are saying so far I understand. Was hoping you can share personal experiences. Say from the past year or so if you had them. Perhaps my experience was unusual. Thing is I had asked the dealer what the art I was looking to sell was worth and then they ended up pricing it way more. This was someone whom I thought was fair (before the deal). I expected them to offer less than they sold for. Possibly as little as half - but 5x was more than I imagined. Again - what if any markups have you personally experienced? Incidentally I am not upset or bitter or what not about that transaction. Just using it here as an illustration in the discussion. Thanks.
  2. A little while back I sold a piece of art and shortly after saw it for 5 times the amount on the reputable dealers site. No, it wasn't cooliness. Wondering what kind of mark ups you have witnessed personally. You dont need to name dealers if you don't wish. For example you sold a bronze splash for x and saw it shortly after for 2.5x. Looking to see if there is a norm. Reason for this post is to have a better understanding of markup for purpose of bargaining when going to make a purchase. Before I had made that deal I thought markups were slimmer for new aquisitions (art that the dealer just got in) Think of this like when you go to the car dealer. You look up dealer cost and this helps with bargaining. Opinions/experiences appreciated.
  3. Is this post asking for who we believe are the most important comic artists are in the history of comics? Or who are our personal favorite 4 artists are? The mt rushmore metaphor is making this a bit tricky for me to know how to answer this thread. For example I recognize that Kirby was king for a reason and I admire his creativity and boldness. In the context of comic art he would be on the mountain. On the other hand, not a huge fan. That is - I can appreciate it, but don't love it. If we're talking personal favorites other artists come to mind.
  4. Great pick up Brian. One of the smartest and funniest movies of all time! For anyone that loves Mel Brooks and this movie, check out this fun video Mel Brooks & Jerry Sienfeld
  5. I dont have the answer - but as a pattern, for most good stuff there usually is the biggest jump at the end. At least thats what I noticed in many auctions that I have watched in past little while.
  6. Not disagreeing with you that pre 1967 there was a lot of fun stuff - but what about that stuff makes you personally feel that its so much better than stuff post 1967? Or perhaps I misunderstood your comment?
  7. Recently I showed a friend some of the art I collected. As he flipped through the portfolio he landed on a John Romita Jr. Punisher cover. He then explained that he really doesn't like JRJR's work. Hey we all have different tastes - but it got me wondering. Which artist do you personally feel is over rated? For me (ready for the hate) its Frank Miller. When he's good, he's really good - but for me a large part of his work is just not fun to look at. I have seen comments from people who love his work -attached to pieces that if they didn't have his name on them -would (in my opinion) not have been held in the same regard. What artist/art run do you feel is over-rated? Or have a hard time understanding its popularity?
  8. Just for fun - what is ohotmu?
  9. So - when I got art framed, the experts did the same thing. Apparently it helps give weight to the image. Otherwise looks more 'floaty' or off. The extra half inch is something you can feel, but don't really notice when you look at it. Kind of like an optical trick.
  10. When I started the post what I really meant by flip was buy with the pre-conceived intent to sell the art rather than to build/add to your collection.
  11. wondering when you say the art dealers cant make it work any more - is there any in particular you are thinking of ? or if its more general - what gives this impression?
  12. Question came up -because I noticed a Frank Miller Daredevil page on the March CLINK auction that was on ebay previously and sold the first day ( for those that recall the old boards - I had started a post on that page, asking if folks thought it was priced too low, too high or what.) So at any rate - it looks like someone saw that item , priced too low in their opinion. They bought it and now it's going to be auctioned. miller dd
  13. So is it fair to say that most folks wouldn't touch published pieces, but getting unpublished pieces (comissions, con sketches etc..) inked is better accepted? I find it interesting that folks would want to have a piece inked on a separate page - for me - having 2 pieces of the same art, one inked and one penciled is not as satisfying as having the one and only - even if that piece happens to be pencil only. It's one of the reasons I haven't bought any paolo rivera daredevil art -even though I think he is awesome. I have a bunch of penciled only published pieces (where color was added digitally over the pencils) and the longer I collect (possibly due to vision loss) have come to prefer inked pages to the point now that if its not inked I just move on. How do you guys feel about it?
  14. Most of us have sold some of the art we bought at some time. The question here is - has anyone bought art specifically with the intention to sell it (either right away or within a short period (say under a year or so). Perhaps you found a piece that isn't exactly right for your collection but you thought it was a good value and figured you could flip it or trade it to get art you like or just some cash. Would love to hear of your experiences. How has it worked for you? Things to consider? Lessons learned?

  16. Just saw this. article about Dan Spiegle
  17. GREAT Painting. Reminds me of Lost in Space.
  18. Something a little bit different. Sergio Aragones Groo additional images on CAF.
  19. That is an amazing set up. Love the life size Spidey! And all the art too.
  20. If everyone can agree, I like the suggestion here. I just want everyone to get along.
  21. Ultimately its about seeing how close you can get. No real money is on the line. Setting the $1000 amount is not perfect but its clear. Talking about medians etc.. blurrs the rules for the game. This is less about math and more about testing yourself. For all the talk of FMV on these boards - what does that all mean? If you guess close, you might have a sense of FMV. If not, its a great opportunity to learn and compare before and after. Love the feedback Gene. Hope folks join me in trying this out and if it ends up being fun, lets make more changes next go round.
  22. The not going over idea was meant to avoid folks guessing outrageous #s. BUT its a fair point. So adjusted the requirement. Must be closest but cant be over by more than $1000. And as per Gene's idea, Reduced the list down to 10 items.
  23. the Heritage auction is coming up soon - so figured this would be the perfect time to play the all new price game. Ideally everyone gets in their " bets" before the auction goes live. (Feb 3rd.) There are well over 700 pieces in this auction. I have picked 10 items from HA's upcoming auction for the purpose of this ART GAME. For each item on the list - enter the value that you think it will sell for. The goal is to be close without going over by more than $1000. This will make watching the auction more fun, especially for those of us that can't participate in purchasing some of the higher priced items. At the end of the auction - you can see how you did. Whoever has the most correct estimates without having gone over is the winner. Winner - wins bragging rights! Winning is not the point however - seeing how close you come to the final #s is the fun part? I usually play this game for items I plan to bid on. In this case - most of the items are out of my regular scope, so guessing the market will be a fun challenge. If anyone is eyeing any of these - you may have the advantage in this game. To participate - simply reply/quote this post with your estimates edited in. If you only want to enter guesses on some (a few) of the 10, thats good too. Comments on why you made your price prediction are welcome. Comments about other folks preditions welcome too. (Will post my own predictions shortly.) The ART: 1. CAPTAIN AMERICA 68 COVER 2.
