  1. Woof at that MTG artwork. How’s the market for current MTG releases, if any? Judging by the cards I’ve seen, they all look digital.
  2. Modern master is subjective. That Phillip Tan cover has a LOT of issues to me.
  3. 1) She loves the Long Halloween TPB cover on the wall, so as long as she doesn’t colour it in one day, we’re all good. 2) Totally agree. The sentiment I was trying to get across is, all the artists you mention come at a premium, deservedly so, as they’re all masters at what they do. They’re also all artists known for their earlier works, and thus nostalgia paired with craft fuels the price tags of their earlier, more notable works. Newer, younger collectors won’t have that nostalgia, and likely won’t have the appreciation you and I do for the aforementioned artists, and opt to buy something like Ryan Stegman or Ryan Ottley. And that’s a good thing, because if they immediately went to the Mignolas and Millers, they’d be priced out and leave the hobby before they even entered. 3) Indeed. He’s that good.
  4. I’ve mentioned this before but it’s relevant: the gallery edition of DKR sits on my coffee table; I’ve had a number of fellow mellenials criticize the art. Same with Tim Sale—my wife thinks she can draw better than him. Mind you, I love them both, they just don’t get the same appreciation from younger readers as someone like Jason Fabok or Jim Lee would, as they’re not as palatable among the masses as more expected, more “heroic” comic artwork. Point being, nostalgia isn’t much at play with exceedingly young collectors, and they’re left with craft. I believe this is both good and necessary to keep the hobby alive, as if newbie collectors are trying to hunt down HUSH pages, they’re going to see the prices and quickly bail. It’s far better if they go to someone like Felix and pick up a $200 page from the new Venom comic to stoke the flame. The collector who bought a $200 Venom page is more likely to develop his collection and pick up a $12000 HUSH page down the road than the collector who immediately seeks it. And if he doesn’t, who cares, it’s a new collector to the hobby. PS: Sean Murphy roolz, BWS droolz.

  8. That's one thing I like about the hobby. Stolen art is hard to move and easy to catch. Very few thieves would want to keep the art, I imagine!

  10. Pasted on. A Mignola Batman piece is great. A Mignola / Donnellys collaboration can burn. I like art, not arts and crafts. Just a personal preference.

  13. I don’t buy on spec to trade. I tried that when I first started and it was a mistake and did not work. I only buy what I love and would like to hold on to, but am okay moving for a piece I love more, which happens. Either way I’m left with a piece I appreciate and enjoy having in my collection, rather than one I’m constantly desiring to move because it has no place there to begin with.
  14. Spencer was Finch’s rep at the time and I emailed him. It was originally 12K but I asked if they’d accept 10, and that I wanted to see the scan but clarified I was on the fence. It was priced not knowing the outcome, and mentioned that if she said yes, it would increase.
  15. I can’t recall a single time holding art without a non-refundable deposit HASN’T backfired on me. I’ve even gone to the point of rejecting other offers, only to get completely burned. If someone goes silent on me, doesn’t pay when they say they will, or asks me to arbitrarily hold something without putting anything down, unless I know and trust them, I will no longer hold it for them because it’s a massive red flag which has ALWAYS lead to a fizzled deal. Waste of time. And this is coming from someone who’s okay with allowing a buyer 2 years to pay...so long as they put down a deposit.

  17. I nearly bought that for 10K, but opted for more White Knight art as: a) I do not like any of Tom King’s Batman. At all. b) For the exception of specific pieces, like the Batman 700 cover and this, Finch’s art isn’t to my personal tastes. c) Batman looks like he’s modelling “THE BEACH” by Calvin Klein.
  18. +1 on Bendis/Maleev DD. Brubaker/Epting Cap was also outrageously good. Heck, I’d probably collect DD artwork too, if it weren’t for that run being digitally drawn.

  21. I avoid event OA for this reason. Metal, while by my favourite creators and Batman-centric, was still an event, and thus something I actively avoided in terms of OA. That stuff fizzles quick nowadays, and the pricetags that the hype and marketing pushes carry are a little more obscene than I’m used to. Unless breathtaking (like the Lee/Williams piece posted earlier in the thread), I also now avoid variant covers, unless they’re part of an A/B set. Incentive and regional covers aren’t falling within my personal guidelines, and I need more of those nowadays with how much good art is being pumped out. A cover to the wedding issue of Batman or DK3 #1 sounds great until you realize there’s 6000 artists doing one, and people are likely only going to remember the primary cover, if at all. I love the idea of DC Black Label. Contained, (mostly) non-continuity stories, freed from tie-ins, long-term implications, and excessive micromanaging. About as pure as we’re going to get from the big two in terms of storytelling. As a reader, I’m excited to jump into the next great classic we’ve never had.
  22. There is definitely some collectors who bought because it was the wedding issue. Significance and creative quality are two different things, with gimmicks like deaths, gender-swaps, marriages, etc. being what gets press coverage. Look at the Janin cover. KNOWING THE OUTCOME, they took advantage of that and asked $18K...and it sold likely because of some pour soul’s nievity. I’d be ticked if I bought OA from this, expecting it to be from a cornerstone issue as far as culture significance goes.
