Yeah - I have never been much of a horror fan. I collected the title when I was a kid but traded them all away.

Since coming to boards, I got bit by the WAR COMICS bug (that pesky @thirdgreenham was mostly to blame.)

Now look where I am on Weird War Tales on the personal collection front:

Cool system, thanks for sharing. How do you note dupes ?

Here are the rules.  Please read them carefully.

There will be four rounds with 5 books per round.  After the deadline for the signup thread has ended, I will start a new thread in the hey buddy can you spare a grade section, scans of the first 5 books will be posted, and I will start a PM thread between myself and each participant.  Be sure to use THIS PM thread to submit your grades every round. I will post a list for the books in the thread where the books are posted for each round.   Please copy and paste that list into our PM, and add the grades for each book.  Only CGC grades (numerical) will be accepted.  Non CGC grades like fine+ or Very fine- will not be accepted.  Be sure to follow the threads that the books are posted in.  This is the only way you will know when the next round starts.  There will be no update when the next round begins sent to our PM thread.  All of the threads with the books and the results will be posted in the hey buddy can you spare a grade section.

You will have 4 days to get your grades in.  After I record your grades, I will reply to the PM thread so you know that your grades have been recorded.  Please do not bump the PM for any reason other than submitting your grades.  Nobody will be allowed to change their grades.  Do not discuss your grades with others until the round is closed.  Also, please do not ask any questions about the books publicly or privately.  If I am provided any special notes from CGC, I will share them in the thread.  If anyone fails to submit their grades for a round, their participation in the contest will be terminated.  You will also not be allowed to enter the next contest.  You will have to "sit one out"  An exception will be if someone contacts me with a legitimate excuse.

After the 4 days are up and the round is closed, I will post scans of the books in CGC holders to reveal their grades, and include the graders notes for the books.  A new thread will be started to show the results of each participant.   The results thread will most likely be started the next day.   There will be a new thread started for the next round.   This thread will most likely be started within an hour after the prior round has ended.

0 points is the best score one can achieve.  1 point will be added to your score for each grade that is higher or lower than the actual grade.    If the actual grade for the book is 5.0 and you guess 4.0, your score for that book is 2.  If the actual grade for the book is 5.0 and you guess 6.0, your score for that book is 2.  If the actual grade for the book is 5.0 and you guess 5.0, your score for that book is 0.

CGC will be awarding $500 for 1st place, $250 for 2nd place and $100 for 3rd place.

How did you do it last time, Mike, are participants allowed to offer a prize (for 4th thru Xth place depending on how many prizes are contributed)?

In the past editions of Green Eggs and Ham grading contest, we had a good time picking prizes in a separate thread, and the variety of contributions and diff't tastes even added an element of suspense and some surprise on occasion.  Nobody was ever required to contribute a book to enter the contest, but it always turned out that many had something to throw in at least worthy of the cost of shipping, and occasional 'Uncle Pennybags' members would give a few items, so most/all got a chance to pick a 'prize.'  [though on principle I'm not a participation trophy person, this always seemed different]

Yeah i had been discussing selling it with someone privately over the last week OFF the boards, and they reached out to me this afternoon ironically to take it prior to me posting it in this thread, so I removed it along with a Flash Comics 56 that also sold privately OFF the Boards prior to me listing it here. So it went from 12 to 10 Slabs... everything else will be listed...

    Thanks, bud.

It was an anchor keeping me sorta locked in and reloading, you liberated me and I'm grateful.  Cool books.

Should I scan & post the remainder or close this sucker now & send the spreadsheet to the usual dealers?

    Sadly, imo. this.

Though I hear good things about consignment via My Comics Shop @mycomicshop, an approach that might reduce some of the effort (e.g. fewer packages, smallest 'haircut' on pricing).

I love the books you listed and you have some beautiful copies, to echo what Randall Dowling already said.  Personally I love to see great comics in high grade so I'm happy if you just keep pounding away here even if you only sell like 25% of what you list, that's no sweat to me; but the slog is real. And it's a slog.

  5. I think of them as the "stridex" reprints but I think most call them the JC Pennys reprints.  Pretty sure were sold in '94 JC Penney Christmas catalog. The ads were modern (from 1994) except IIRC the golden age, Young Men (forget what #) w/original ads.
    FF #66 & 67
    Amazing fantasy#13
    Spider-Man annual #5
    Avengers #88
    Captain America #109
    Hulk #140
    Sgt. Fury #13
    Submariner #8
    Thor annual #2
    Tomb of Dracula #25
    X-men #28,62,63

Fifteen comics in the 'set' - and again IIRC, a few were reprints of reprints (not sourced from the original issue) - the FF 66, the Cap cover Sgt Fury, and the early X-Men.

ASM are way seriously OMG over priced.

    Make that OMFG.

I filled a short box of ASM dupes by 2008 (building my ASM collection), was 'out' of comics for around 8 years, and from 2016 to around 2019, these comics [mid grade ASM run filler stock, in range of 4.5 to 7.0] were not very different than the prices as I'd paid in '06-'07.  As with most superhero books, high grades, and keys in all grades, of course, went up a lot.

But past few years even the mid-grade filler ASM silver and bronze have gone up a fair amount.

What I prefer is exactly what I said, a large scan of the front, and a large scan of the back and that's it. That's the way comics were sold on the boards and online for years before this current social media trend of including dozens of close-ups.

Here's an example of what I prefer:

That seller even puts the back covers in spoilers. Scrolling through endless close-ups is bothersome and I tend to gloss over sales threads like that. The big auction houses don't do it that way and the big online dealers don't do it that way either.

That was my 'best practice' in past.  I've since added a photo at slight angle to show cover texture/gloss.

Always use spoiler for all images after first scan, to reduce clutter & load time.

Since we're venting our 'don't likes,' my 5 cents (inflation) is I'm not a big fan of sales without back scan, though I have bought without seeing back, especially on a low $$ book.
